Champions League 2011/12

Without wanting to sound like a terrible smart ass and simply because it sounds a little strange in German ears, let me explain the difference between Bayer and Bayern:
- Bayern is German for Bavaria, hence Bayern Munich (as Munich is the capital of Bavaria)
- Bayer refers to the German pharmaceutical/chemical company Bayer AG, hence Bayer Leverkusen (as Leverkusen is the location of the main Bayer factory and the team was originally made up of factory employees)

Hence the 'n' at the end makes a big difference and the words Bayer and Bayern have actually got nothing to do with each other.

I hope I haven't offended anyone by posting this explanation and it is not aimed at you drekkard, its just that I have read things like 'Bayer Munich' or 'Bayern Leverkusen' a little too often on English speaking boards without saying something.

:TU:

also that tackle by marcelo was no foul. blatant dive, look how Müller throws his arms about. Ribéry was worse though, he must of dived about 5-6 times in this game. but Bayern probably deserved the win. looking forward to seing Chelsea get slaughtered tonight.

Are you guys serious? Of course it was a foul! Marcelo even apologized right away, knowing full well what he had done. I don't want to blow this out of proportion - but neither should you, in the other direction. Yes, Mueller makes "the most out of it" afterwards, but that doesn't change the fact he was harshly tackled from behind.
Blatant dive ... wow ...

Beware, the next thing they will say if the german go through is that Bayern players are doped.

You are totally right and it's not off topic. Edited my previous post. I knew that it is Bayern, and I'm totally aware of it, but for some reason I was too unaccurate writing and did the mistake several times. Thanks for the tip. It's always better to correct things if possible. I committ too many mistakes when writing quickly.

I agree. He wouldn't come and apologize if there wasn't a contact.
And I fear we have to prepare for those things at least 2 times again in a week time...first on Saturday and then on Wednesday...

There definitely was contact.

And of course Muller made the most of it trying to get him sent off but who wouldn't? He deserved a red card for such a blatant cynical tackle from behind with no chance in hell of getting the ball purely out of frustration anyway.

Yeah should've been a red and Lahm shouldn't have gotten a yellow.

Other than that, Webb did a really good job in a really tough game to referee so I'm still satisfied with his performance.

3-1 for FCB me think...Chels might get a penalty shout or offside goal most likely. A draw would be great 1-1 with 30 SOT

I think Chelsea will do well enough tonight. It's in Camp Nou that they'll get embarrassed and lose by 3.

Might even be able to get a draw tonight though I think they will lose probably by 1 goal. 2-1 maybe?

Goddamn it, I was just thinking that Barça should hold the ball till half-time because Messi was still recovering from that twist earlier, and they do the exact opposite and give him the ball resulting in this.

Crap.

A lot of bad luck for us by now. We should be winning and instead we are one down. Let's hope the players can come back and score at least one, because they largely deserve it. I fear Messi may be injured after that...

Good goal from Chelsea, fantastic passes by both Lampard and Ramirez (who plays a hell of a match) and a good finish by Drogba.
Barcelona should have scored in the first half. I'm not impressed by their second half until now (85th minute). This seems the most vulnerable Barca under Guardiola.

Well, chelsea had only one chance, barcelona had 2 posts and several more chances. We were extremely unlucky against a team with 10 men behind. Let's hope we can come back in the 2nd leg.

I didn't like at all the over complicated passing the players tried for the second half and the lack of shooting and crossing.

That said, Barcelona had 20 shots to goal, dont forget it!

It was a nice goal from Chelsea and they played it exactly right, although they rode their luck a bit.

Drogba is an embarrassment though, it is so sad seeing such a good player resort to that and that is one if the reasons I dont like him, he has done that throughout his career.

I think Barcelona will be more clinical when they need to be, I get the feeling they're teasing us sometimes :P

Good performance from Chelsea none the less, returned a bit of pride back to the Premier League this season.

I still can't believe Chelsea pulled a win over Barcelona! And all of us were talking about in getting battered, humiliation, etc.

Bayer used to sponsor Uerdingen as well.

Anyway a travesty of a result tonight. How Barca did not score at least four goals is a mystery. For all the accusations of players like Busquets being a diver Drogba takes the biscuit.

Deliberately trying to disrupt the flow of Barcelona's game by taking out time in feigned injury breaks.

Valdes should have saved his effort. At the Nou Camp the grass will not be left long and it is much much bigger so I still and hope Barcelona come through.

Needless to say the EPL hype train will start again. I think most fans especially those of Liverpool will be very disappointed to see the result tonight.

Chelsea are liked in very few places.

Drogba: Busquets long lost african twin...

:)

Was thinking the same thing. Except this guy's FAR surpassed Sergio Busquets.

The first half alone should've had 5 minutes of injury time simply because he went down like 4 times and each time rolled on the grass for a minute!

There was only 2 mins of injury time in first half though which is just wrong considering all the stoppage.

Anyway, credit to Chelsea for

1. Extremely disciplined defending. Everyone put in a good shift from Cech who made some good saves to the likes of Terry, Cole and Cahill who all made good blocks and challenges and stayed on their feet as much as they could.

2. A superb goal! 2 great passes and a wonderful finish from Drogba.

Other than that, let's not forget that Messi, Fabregas, Pedro, Sanchez most of these players had an 'off night' by their standards and still the end result was:

Barca 72% possession Chelsea 28%

Barca 24 shots Chelsea 6

Barca 6 shots on target Chelsea 1 (The goal which was a great goal!)

And Barca hit the bar and the post twice and overall Chelsea rode their luck as well and certainly needed it to get this result.

So as a neutral, I can't wait for 2nd leg now! Just like Bayern vs. Real, it's WIDE open and anything can happen with the home teams having won the first leg narrowly. Should be a very interesting semifinal 2nd leg in both matches.

I do think Barca will win by 3 goals 4-1 or 3-0 in the 2nd leg.

And they really missed Pique as any LONG-ball looked to threaten Barcelona. Stoke would've done really well against Barcelona today as well, just playing hard and disciplined under Tony Pulis and resorting to long throw-ins which looked more dangerous than Barca's many wasted corners/free kicks.

It also made me feel even better about my bet on Bayern Munich to win the CL though. As you can again see, as great as Barca is, they need TWO legs to get the job done and playing away from home is no easy task for them. Against Bayern in ONE 90-min match in Allianz Arena, most likely whoever they opponent is will lose.

Frustrating match for me as a neutral. Chelsea defended alright, but Barca's insistence at slow build up play is what allowed that. It's almost arrogance to a fault that Barca refused to pick up the pace and try to penetrate with early passes.

Say what you want about their ambition going forward, but Chelsea's discipline was phenomenal. Particularly Lampard, who was defensively flawless really.

Stop it ! Stop it now !

Are you Andy Gray in disguise. ;)

Oh and there's something glorious about Barcelona fans complaining about a player staying on the ground feigning injury when they're winning. Do you actually watch your team?

As a United fan I had to suffer through about 10 minutes of that crap in the first of the two CL finals. When all these fit young men had 'cramp' in the 70th minute...yeah...

Busquets and Drogba running into each other and each diving and rolling...I was waiting for the world to explode ;)
