Best hockey game ever?

I’m still working on the recomp. Our AI overlords will probably take me first at The Reckoning based on how hard I’m working it, but hopefully we get at least a few years of playing NHL Legacy at the highest settings before this.

Although I still think NHL 94 is the most fun hockey game, I've been on a bit of a N64 kick as of late playing a lot of the ISS games but I'm also having fun with NHL 99 N64. Anyone played this? I've got the camera set up like NHL94 and it plays kinda similar to the classic 16 bit versions I think.

Has anybody tried NHL 27?

I'm went trough numerous of reviews. The thing all they can agree on is that presentation and graphic is horrible. Okay, I can live with that.

But reviews are very different speaking about gameplay. Some says its exactly the same is it was before, some says that gameplay is improved compared to the previous years, it's a bit slower, more realistic. Any troughs from you guys?

@Martan and @crustcyb, if you'd like to try the modifications I made to the recomp, temporarily move your other exe and dlls to a safe place, then extract all these files (including the mask subfolder) to your recomp game directory, and launch nhllegacy.exe. It is looking for your game assets in the "game" subdirectory of where you are launching the exe. You can modify the location it looks the game exe and creates saved userdata for by modifying text fields in the launcher.toml. You can also modify the resolution here. You should see a remarkable improvement in performance. I'm curious if this works and you're seeing performance improvements.

Don't bother. Stick to watching Sparta or Slavia Praha in the Extraliga. The game is the usual dross from EA. Plays nothing like the real game. A few tinkerings here and there with the netminders clunky as ever and the patterns on the PP and PK nothing like you would see in top level hockey. And none of the different types of powerplay and penalty kill. All the top players are so similar as attributes make virtually no difference.

So Pastrnak is similar to Kuch and similar to Celebrini. Ditto the centres and defencemen. Makar or Quinn Hughes or Dahlin or Seider or Sergachev. Might as well be clones. Until the monopoly EA has on hockey is removed more of the same rubbish year in and year out.

@sleevel and @Martan check this one out fellers. (Not sure if you entered that discord group I talked about before... otherwise I can post the link here)

It's an updated roster / jersey / ice (with ice ads, adboards and all!) for NHL Legacy on the RPCS3 (Ps3) emulator. It's not perfect (no updated faces, for example...), but it's pretty functional.

Again, if you guys wanna try it but can't access the discord, let me know and I'll post the link to the mod here.

I did not have time to try before but tried that right now. Performance wise it's much better. I'm getting 60fps on 2k res. Only downside is that scoreboard blinks/flashes all the time. But apart of that it seems pretty cool. Thanks

Thanks for the tip but I actually like the original rosters. I would be interested in some mods for the original season but so far it's great vanilla.

There is quite a lot of new independent games made with help of AI just recently and when I saw this bandwagon I have decided to jump on.

I don't know if any of you ever played that game but as a kid, more than 15 years back, I used to play quite a lot https://kiekko.tv/ game (it's still live). It is a top-down online hockey game where you control one player. Very simple game, control by mouse-only. But very addictive playing with friends.

I kinda missed that so I'm now developing (well not me, Claude obviously) the game, mainly for myself as a fun project. It's heavily inspired by kiekko.tk. It's singleplayer only. You still control one-guy and others are bots.

I called that Line-shift because I feel that fatigue is one of the most important aspects of Ice Hockey so you have to sub your player to get fresh legs on ice. If you are on ice more than 30-40s with one player you can feel that you are slower, you can't hold the puck properly etc.
I aim for the most realistic hockey feel (well, as far as top-down hockey can feel), mostly focused on european style of ice hockey.

It's very early stage and who knows if it gets any better in future. My priority is to get gameplay more less right (still far away), then focus on other stuff as having different teams, leagues etc.

If you want to give it a try just download .html file and open it in any browser. it is highly recommended to play it on desktop with mouse otherwise you are pretty lost. https://www.mediafire.com/file/w5u2fnqq5mjrjop/kotouc-0.7.18.html/file

Helpful suggestion: Unity and Unreal are very powerful game engines which you can do much more than html. For proof of concept and prototyping, Claude can spin something up instantly in HTML and JavaScript, but Unity or Unreal with an MCP for Claude to control, using free or relatively inexpensive premade assets can really take it to the next level.
