Arsenal Thread

Statement directly from Arsenal football club:

Arsenal Football Club is aware that BBC Newsnight is carrying a story this evening purporting to describe Arsenal's relationship with Belgian football club, Beveren.

Arsenal does not normally make public its agreements with third parties. However, Arsenal can confirm that it has had a technical relationship with Beveren since 2001. This relationship has a number of benefits to both clubs such as providing a platform to share coaching methods and techniques as well as facilitating the option of players being loaned between the clubs. For example, during the course of the relationship, Arsenal players David Grondin, Liam Chilvers, John Halls and Graham Stack all spent successful loan periods at Beveren as did Emmanuel Eboue, who played in a number of trial matches with Arsenal whilst contracted to Beveren. Such was the latter player's success, Arsenal subsequently signed Eboue on a permanent basis.

In addition, Arsenal confirms that it has never owned, directly or indirectly, any shares in Beveren or had any power whatsoever to influence its management or administration. It did in 2001 provide funds of 1,570,703 Euros by way of loan to a member of the consortium to assist in stabilising the finances of Beveren.

At no time has anyone at Arsenal been contacted by any regulatory or investigatory body with respect to its relationship with Beveren. Arsenal and all its staff have acted properly throughout, in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations, and in the best interests of Beveren, Arsenal and the broader footballing community.

Well that's a bit of a shock isn't it. No wonder we picked up Toure and Eboue for about 750k!

A couple of interesting quotes here

Ian Henry writes: Dear ANR Good comment about the Beveren story. You might also point out that, I believe, Abramovich owns directly or indirectly shares in other clubs, in Moscow and Brazil (where Tevez plays)... and doesn't the finance company which owns a stake in Spurs also have stakes in various other clubs, including Rangers?

Paul writes: Couldn't agree more about the hypocricy of calling a £1m loan 'controlling' while ignoring the £300m payments being made by Chelski. While I agree that Arsenal should avoid illegal activities surely they cannot allow Chelsea a free hand in dodgy dealings? Lets compare Chelsea's CSKA and Corinthians (MSI) links with Arsenal's links with Beveren. hhmmm no contest. If all Arsenal got out of the Beveren deal was Eboue for something like £1m compared with MSI buying Tevez for Chelsea, I mean Corinthians for a South American record fee.

My two cents (already in a specific thread).

Allright, let's inform you about the big news in Belgium today.

Arsenal would have participated in Belgium club Beveren since 2001.
FIFA and UEFA forbid clubs to participate financially in other clubs.
Possible sanction: a ban from the Champions League for a couple of years.

In a nutshell what happened (i have lots of information so what i'm gonna write will not be necessary correct. If you have questions, just shoot.
If you doubt what i write, don't shoot.
Sources: the Belgian justice, the BBC and Belgian journalist Raf Sauvillier who wrote an article about it in my paper "De Morgen".

Since the end of the nineties Belgian club Beveren was virtually bankrupt and was searching for big investors.

In comes French former coach Jean-Marc Guillou. Guillou invests in Beveren and takes it virtually over. From that moment Beveren is a club with virtually only Ivorian players: Romaric, Neé, Yaya Touré, Yapi Yapo, Eboué....Beveren plays show football but the results are not that good (one exception: they win the Belgian cup two years ago).

Where do all these Ivorian players come from???
From an academy in Abidjan.
Guillou has started this academy in association with former Ivorian student he met in France: Roger Ouegnin. Ouegnin officially has nothing to do with the academy but he is president of Ivorian football club Asec Mimosa. The players go from the academy to Asec Mimosas which serves as a kind of shopping window for these players (Kolo Touré and Didier Zokora are the best known from that period). The club becomes one of te best in Africa, even wins the African CL and European clubs sent scouts to watch the players. The money goes to Asec but also to Guillou (and his then unknown assocaites). The money is fram from evenly split, Ouegnin claimls that Guillou takes too much money.

Did the money for the Beveren take-over came from Guillou alone??? Of course not, hardly anuyone is that rich... He's backed by the nv Goal, a very mysterious construction. Soon the Belgiabn justice become suspicious (trade in human beings, this is not the right translation but that is irrelevant because they neverfound the NV Goal guilty of that offense).

Fact is that after a thorough search they find the persons who are behind NV Goal: Arsène Wenger, Guillou and a couple of ohter French people who were active in football but alos David Dein of Arsenal. The same people who were behind the academy in Cote D'Ivoire (except Dein).

They went to Beveren because they had a serious row with Roger Ouegnin over the transfer money of some players (Guillou awaits prison in Ivory Coast because of his differences with Ouegnin). Beveren serves as the new shopping window. The money is split between Guillou, Wenger, Arsenal and (a fraction) Beveren.

Eboué goes to Arsenal.
Other Beveren players like Marco Née go to other clubs for lots of money because Arsenal declares to be interested to buy them....

Beveren wants to get rid of Guillou but can't because Guillou has debts to Asec Mimosas and has manimulated everything in order that Beveren has to pay these huge debts...this would be the end of Beveren.

These are roughly the facts....

Judge for yourself.
I'll be glad to answer your questions.

I don`t buy that they search and found names...they were tipped(someone was cornered and spill the beans)50m and season tickets to FA ;)

probably Chelsea. They took Man Utd's transfer targets, they're trying to get you relegated or out of the CL. Next, it will be Liverpool players bummed my dog.

They're slowly getting rid of their rivals:lol:

There's a really good piece on Arsenal Mania about the Arsenal's squad and issues affecting rotation and transfers, check it!

Exactly my thoughts on who we need. Cover for Toure, and cover for Gilberto.
Then I will be happy. Wenger saying 'I dont need anymore players' scares me a little because it brings back memories from only a year ago.

Some new pictures on what will be the club finest stadium in England!

I love the shiny roof!!

Is there any doubt who'll be playing the most beautiful game this coming season?

You're one to talk about beautiful with a profile like that. Kidding.

He could have scored a fantastic hat-trick if he hadn't donked the bar!

I think wenger's early move has probably saved the club a few million.

Apart from that goal, what else is good about him?
Personally, that goal wasnt anything worth getting excited over. Even Ronaldo scored a better one for Portugal but we all know how inconsistant he is.

Our new signing puts in a MOTM performance for his national team in the WC finals, scoring two impressive goals in the process.

Pardon us if we're a little bit happy. No one's saying he's Ronaldinho, but even you would admit he looks good value at £7 million.

I think Rosicky was impressive all game. He never stopped running, created most chances for the Czechs, and even score 2 as a midfielder. He was great in Euro 2004 too. I think he'll fit into Arsenal, but I'm scared he might be another Hleb.

You're talking as if he performs like that every day.
£7million is good but whether it was a good move still remains to be seen.

Lovely stadium, beautiful pitch.
I don't think Arsenal will win in this stadium...every match will end 0-0...there are no goals...oops...

RuneEdge: sour grapes??? Rossicky will turn Arsenal in an even more attractive team...i think you should visit the new Spurs thread, that team will be Man Utd biggest contender for a UEFA spot...

PS: and i absolutely love Spurs (always dreamt of saying that in an Arsenal thread).

convinced you I was implying he does that everyday? I don't know if he'll be a success or a flop, but a good performance is a good performance. Respect where respect is due, and 2 goals in an opening game is at least worthy of tipping one's hat in my book.

Surely you can't argue with that? Although I am looking forward to seeing how you somehow inevitably manage to do just that :)
