Arsenal Thread

I'm sure many gooners around here have read it, but it's worth mentioning it for a heads up: http://swissramble.blogspot.ro/2012/10/arsenal-song-remains-same.html
it really puts the whole self sustaining discourse in a correct light: it has become a unique selling proposition rather than an expression of status-qvo.
our commercial income is laughable (especially comparted to Liverpool! let's compare ouselves to someone closer to us as Man Utd are only surpassed by Bayern, football performance was no impediment for them)and the base of the policy is player sale, it's easier.

We had to tie ourselves down to finance the stadium, apparently in 2013/2014 we can increase this considerably. They have been very honest about that, they are not trying to hide it.

All the clubs mentioned are much bigger clubs than us, so it is no surprise their revenue is bigger than ours. Liverpool are still a bigger club than Arsenal and have many more fans due to their past, so it is no surprise their revenue is better than ours, coupled with the fact we haven't won anything for a while.

But I agree more needs to be done, we have been heavily reliant on player sales, but I still don't think they have been selling the players just to make a ridiculous profit. If you look at all of the players, they all wanted to leave, if we were just getting rid of players for no reason and transfer listing them then that would be different. Song is the only player we could have probably kept because he wasn't making as much of a deal to leave (in public anyway) but we have found out he wanted to leave, so it wouldn't have been long before it would have been bad to keep him.

Revenue will increase when we start to do better on the pitch and we can renew/get new deals in 2013/2014. We can probably get deals over twice what we are getting at the moment.

The stadium has come with sacrifices, but there is no doubt it will benefit us for the next 50 years at least.

But also it isn't good that we are relying on player sales to make a profit, but their hands are tied for the next season or so. If we can win something in this time then all the better.

The two Spaniards are incredible!

Always been a fan of Arteta and glad to see him being given the recognition he deserves at last! He's playing a superb role for The Gunners!

+1 here mate!

Cazorla's technique is ridiculous and he makes it look so easy. His dribbling, movement, passing and especially shooting with both feet - this is impressive, to the point you can't tell if the guy is left or right-footed.

And Arteta is a machine! He didn't play as the deepest lying midfielder before, I guess. But he carries out his duty to the letter. He's that serious. He's spot on!
One of my favourite Arsenal players in recent years.

There's an excellent piece here, where AS let one interview the other: http://news.arseblog.com/2012/10/arteta-interviews-cazorla-for-as-awesomeness-ensues/

Alan Shearer hadn't even heard of him before he signed for Arsenal, the pillock.

Why is every commentator/pundit in England an idiot?

It's a common thing, even paul merson think's majority of the players in the prem are world class

but serious note, 9/10 english players are overrated and overpriced.

I remember that! :D :LMAO:

Funny thing is Ben Arfa until recently was the guy whose reputation and fame had always far EXCEEDED his actual ability and consistency.

He was a media star since he was 16 years old! One of the most overhyped teenagers for years.

@Rentboy, yeah poor Mikel! I feel for him in regards to NT. Had he not been Spanish, he would've had a lot of caps. Just unlucky for him that he was up against some of the best Spanish midfielders in the HISTORY of the beautiful game!!

Laurent Koscielny:

Meanwhile, Koscielny himself has been speaking in the French press about his experiences in the Premier League. Pinpointing Didier Drogba as the toughest opponent he’s faced, the former-Lorient man also took a moment to identify Luis Suarez as a pesky, little prick.

Speaking to L’Equipe he remarked: “A striker that I hate marking? Luis Suarez. He is hard to take.

“He’s a cheat, always pulls the shirt and gives little kicks. You always want to give him a kick but you have to be careful not to be sent off.”

Just finished reading Arsènal. Great book.

Some things that i remembered:

- Wenger truly has less money to spend since the move to the Emirates and especially since the Highbury real estate project turned out to be less of a goldmine than the Arsenal board thought it would be.

-Stan Kroenke is a sphinx and the fact that there is another big investor (Usmanov?) may have avoided a Glazier scenario for Arsenal.

- Things went pear shaped after David Dein was sacked.

- Arsène Wenger is a stubborn man.

- Theo Walcott is among the players who cares most about the fans (i.e. one of the few players who genuinely takes his time to go to fan events and talk with the fans, that was a surprise after all the rather negative things i've read about him in this thread).

- The Arsenal board room seems a warzone.

- The deal with Emirates and with another big sponsor (Nike?) is a very bad deal. Arsenal needs people who are commercially more shrewd and astute than they had a couplr of years ago.

- Arsène doesn't like more experienced players.

This book is a good read for all people interested in Arsenal and a must read for fans who want to understand what happened since the move away from Highbury.

have always known this. He seems to be changing his ways a little this season though with training the defence by getting in Steve Bould etc

1.Dein didn`t want the Emirate stadium he wanted to move to Wembley . His vision was short sighted , he brought division and thought he was more important than the club and misjudge Arsene`s friendship vs. his employment in the club. So in short even they couldn`t see eye 2 eye. Now, Dien is out wishing he was in .

2.Warzone in board, not anymore! after death of Frizman and the Lady Nina bird sold the shares to Stan.

3.The Sponsorship is a big worry , it runs out in the summer of 2014. That means we need a few trophies to get the best deal imo.

4. Arsene doesn`t like the egos of experience players. Every so often this is proven to cause problems in the dressing room. He has pick a few experience players in his time and proved to be a mint decision. We see this again now...Poldoski,Cazorla,Gervinho,Sagna,Arteta, Per n Vermaelen.

The more books I read , the more frustrated I get :COAT:

I read that too, some 2 years ago.
The Highbury Square development was a brilliant idea, but the 2008 crisis hit it right in the beginning. However, at the moment the whole development is nearly sold out and can be considered a success.

The sponsorship deals was a very bold move. The values are so low compared to some other clubs, but the advantage of it was that Arsenal got money up front.
Now things will go back to normal, it seems Arsenal has agreed a lucrative deal with Adidas to be the new kit supplier/sponsor. And the Emirates shirt sponsorship should be renegotiated as well, I think around 2014.

The thing that will remain still for a long time is the naming rights for the stadium.

The book shows how Arsene Wenger and David Dein are (or at least were) true friends. When they sacked Dein, Wenger went as far as asking him if he should quit too. I wonder how the book had access to these things, who was the source and if we should take with a pinch of salt.
But then again, I wouldn't be surprise if he did, such a loyal man Arsene Wenger is.
He is irritatingly stubborn, has some other flaws of course, but what I like about him the most is his integrity. Wenger wants to do things the right way and he goes by his principles no matter what.

PS: I have no idea of Wenger's relationship with David Dein nowadays. He is working with Usmanov in Red & White Holdings, being therefore opposition to the people Wenger works closely with (Gazidis and Kroenke - although nobody seems close to that man).
Another interesting thing to note is that Dein's son, Darren, is a football agent who has been systematically turning the heads of his clients who play for Arsenal - and some of those players just happened to be among the most talented ones in the team.

Yeah the thing about things going pear shaped after David Dein went, implies that it wouldn't have done if he stayed.

It could be true in some respects, as we wouldn't have built the new stadium and money would have been more freely available, so maybe we would have had a couple more trophies in this 7/8 year period. So for the short term, keeping Dein and not building the stadium would have been good for the club.....maybe.

But I am convinced that building the stadium and going through this tough period, is beneficial for the club in the much longer term and will keep us up with the top teams in the world, financially and hopefully with Silver wear as well, for many many years to come.

I for one shudder at the thought of playing our games at Wembley, I think if that would of happened, then it would have taken a chunk of soul from the club.

Anyway, we will never know what could of would of happened, but things are looking brighter on the horizon, especially when we can make our new sponsorship deals etc

Yes, I forgot to mention that Dein wanted Arsenal to play at Wembley. Crazy stuff!

Peter Hill-Wood said the other day he would never like to see the club being tennants to the FA.

Well, you seem to forget Dein brought Stan into the fold in the beginning. I think Stan changed his alliance with Dein soon as he saw and learn the Arsenal model. He was taken back ,how well the club was self-sustained. He knew Dein was looking for a new regime to bring him back in the fold of things. Hence the new Red n White corporate gangster.

Normal football! Yee Haa!

We really need to get a good run of games upto xmas now, starting with this one. It will be tricky no doubt, but we have to win these games if we have any hope for doing something this season.

Maybe a little 15mins for Wilshere at the end, if we are doing well? would be good to see him back....gradually.

Well really bad, Norwich played well and kept pressing us and could have had a few goals (After we had to commit ourselves forward to get a goal).

Norwich have played a lot better this season than their league place has suggested but we should be winning a game like this.

We just looked flat all over the pitch, very disappointing. You can use the International break as an excuse but other teams won today who had lots of international players out.

We have to play better mid week.

flat is being too kind :COAT: It was miserable in the 20th minute mark. Once, you saw the approach 80% narrow w/ hardly a cross. We held the ball to only square pass ,no spark or desire.

I hate to go in circles. But yesterday underlined the issue of our goal keeper situation. One that has been totally neglected by Arsene Wenger.

Now we will have people crying out for a new GK signing in January but we should have signed a new keeper in the summer really.

I won't even comment on the rest of the match, because it was just dismal. No explanation for that. I don't want to take anything away from Norwich but our players didn't try hard enough. Nowhere near! No desire, no heart, no urgency... one to put behind us.

I don't really think it was a major mistake by Mannone.

The ball swerved at the last minute and bounced just before he got to it. It wasn't great, but it was hardly a howler. It was a difficult shot to control and save properly.

The defence should have been quicker to react to it and the midfield/defence should have closed the man down before he got the shot away in the first place.

We were just poor yesterday and I don't think the Keeper was the reason that we lost that game.

FUCK U ARSENA FUCKING CUNTS. POOR JUST FUCKING POOR!! SHOCKING AND I AM PISSEDD OFF TO THE MAX! U CANT EXPECT TO WIN FUCK ALL PLAYING IKE THAT.

WHERE WAS CARZOLA? FUCKING SHIT HE WAS, DIDDNT DO FUCK ALL. ARTETA? RAMSEY? GIRUD? THEY WAS ALL SHIT AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF WEARING THE ARSENAL SHIRT. FUCK THEM.
