Arsenal Thread

That Holland team is a bunch of individuals, not a proper team. RvP has to look at himself, because his performances were under par. In fairness, Huntelaar was even more ineffective up front, so RvP was still their best CF. He scored a great individual goal against Germany, but overall he was poor. Yesterday against Portugal he was especially out of sorts.

Anyone saw this announce the signing of Olivier Giroud after Euro 2012. 50/50 true but just wonder with rumors of Bendtner ,Sebastien Squillaci,Carlos Vela all making the move out ASAP.

I would really want to know 2 things will Robin stay and is M`Vila coming to The Arsenal. It seems were the only ones after M`Vila atm. July 1st everything changes with contracts end and we know the other clubs will start the bidding.

Interesting if Giroud is wrapped up. Podolski and Giroud in...does something have to give with RVP? Not sure. With Chamakh likely to leave, and Vela I could see Arsene keeping RVP. The only thing that confuses is me is that while Giroud plays properly up front, both RVP and Podoslki would appear to satisfy the same position just behind him.

Arsenal already have a Giroud in Chamakh, both are very similar players. But maybe a swap between Giroud and Chamakh is good for both players and both clubs.

Still think Chamakh is a very, very good player. It seems as if Wenger doesn't have enough patience with that kind of player.

I hope the swap happens. It's a win win for both clubs and both players.

It's nice to see a transfer where you expect everyone will benefit. :)

Usually not even one party fully benefits at the expense of the other. In this case, a Giroud / Chamakh swap + $$$ can be to both players' benefits as well as Arsenal and defending French champs Montepellier who will gain a proven and experienced CL forward in Chamakh and one who'll be banging in goals again and playing with rejuvanted confidence back in familiar surroundings in Ligue 1 and birth country France.

Regardless of what you think of Chamakh, I think we all agree it won't happen for him in North London. So it's just better to move and resume his career elsewhere.

I have a funny feeling about Arsenal securing Podolski and Giroud so early. Maybe RvP will go after all and knowing how Arsenal does things, letting a 29 year old player go for £30m in his final year would be too tempting.

It's not good to sell your captain (again) but I can't help thinking this will be it. Also people are suggesting all of them (van Persie, Giroud and Podolski) could be playing together up front, but I just don't see it happening. With the type of players they are, a change back to 4-4-2 would be most likely - and I'd be happy with it.

The other thing to remember about RvP is that the last 16 months are the exception to his career, rather than the rule. He's never managed to be fit for that long ever. What odds he manages a whole season?

The reason City won the league is that they had virtually no major long term injuries to key players in the whole season. I give lots of credit to their medical staff for that, but also it must have factored into recruitment too. RvP is too much a liability to build a team around - especially if they end up shipping out Dzeko and Tevez.

(then again it's City, they'll probably just buy Lavezzi, RVP and Falcao in case Aguero misses a few matches)

RVP won all the personal accolades in his best performance in a single season. Whatever happens we lost the heart of our squad w/ Fabregas /Nasri...imo Nasri was the future. The blow hit hard and we recovered nicely at the end.

No player will hold The Arsenal in such high esteem under Wenger. He received, what he gave out to so many good players closing on 30yrs of age. Wenger saw value rise or decline £££ . I think it took his heart to bleed on a young Fabregas n Nasri to leave. In short a womanizer is a womanizer until he falls in love!

Fergie treated players in a relation wise never in a £££ (financial setting) getting the best while also losing out (£££).

I will never want to go back to a 4-4-2 system those are for the beeper/pager generation. Podolski plays on the Wings for Germany and he can play as a CF. We still have Gervinho coming on his 2nd season too! Remember Nasri was average in his 1.5 season with us. Giroud won`t get many games 18 at best. We need a Keeper too, don`t forget Alumina(released),Mannone(HULL),and Fabanski(back to Poland?) all leaving! I expect 3-4 players more and We need a RB- Sagna is the only player no offense to Jarl he`s not ready. M`Vila will be a miss I can`t see where he will fit. Wenger played a 4-2-3-1 with Song-Jack as CDMs , but Song-M`Vila would solve any Defensive line up!

My fantasy line up:

sagna.... Koc...Verm....Gibbs

.......Song........M`Vila.....

Gerv.......Jack/Arteta......Pod

.............RVP.............

Well apparently Wilshere failed a drug test and that is the reason for him being Injured so to speak.

Wilshere has deactivated his twitter account too

Where did you hear this?

Also I guess it was an internal drug test? but why keep him out for a whole season? I don't understand?

its bullshit !!! jonney that`s why jack turn off his twitter account even Arsenal FC backed Jack. Him and his wifey been bullied on twitter.

100% finally! :D
Giroud confirmed at Arsenal.com
Second signing of the summer and it's not even July yet. I like this!!

Some people say we just need M'Vila now and we're done. What do you guys think?
I think we would still be short in midfield, considering the other rather unstable/unavailable/recovering options: Wilshere, Ramsey, Diaby, Rosicky...

M'Vila is a solid DMF but we need a playmaker in the midfield (Fabregas never was really replaced). The creative role could be with Rosicky and Wilshere. But can we expect them to begin the season? No. Maybe Rosicky, but then we would be one injury away from a bad place again...

Arshavin could obviously be a creative AMF, but I don't see him playing for Arsenal again.

The biggest job in this transfer window is actually selling (who would have thought!). Denilson, Bendtner, Park, Chamakh, Arshavin, Squilaci. We need to find suitors. I'd wrap Diaby to go as a bonus on any of those deals.
We need to get those guys off the wage bill ASAP.

And then in the end, there's the "small matter" of RvP's renewal. No bid deal though ;)

You totally forgot about Arteta who can be Cesc' replacement not in terms of goals scored but in terms of chances created and his vision and passing abilities.

Then you have Rosicky and Wilshere who can help with him in that department as well so I'd say you have a decent group of 'passers' in that group.

M'Vila is also more than just a DMF and passes quite well. I think you do need him given the fact that even Song is better at passing these days than his defensive duties. He's also solid and consistent. I think he would be a great buy for Arsenal.

Congrats on Giroud!

I didn't really forget about Arteta. You will have noticed that I left him and Song out because they are undisputed starters. But no, Arteta is not the creative minded midfielder we need. He plays a little bid ahead of Song, but also adds more steel to that midfield. But I wouldn't use him as the most advanced midfielder. We needed a player who is very creative there.

I'm not holding my breath for a M'Vila deal, as his suggested price tag is higher than we paid for Giroud. Some people have been saying he could be above the £20m mark. Could it be??

£11(27yrs,1.82m)+£12(25yrs,1.92m)= £23m ... No more kids :BOP:

I'd be very cautious with expectations on Giroud, guys. Chamakh scored lots of goals in Ligue 1 and was no kid when he joined us, remember? And we all know what happened after...

I haven't watched enough of Giroud and don't know how good he is on the ball. However, being a target man and an aerial ball specialist, I still don't know what to think of him at Arsenal. But I do know he will need some decent service, and I'm talking about lots of more crosses in the box.
Unless Wenger decreases his dose of tippy-tappy stuff and start playing a little more direct, it's not an impossibility that he becomes Chamakh MkII.

I'm expecting Podolski to cause a more immediate impact, but let's see.

Regardless, I still liked the Giroud signing. Always good to have new and motivated people who will be putting decent work rate.

I just hope Wenger plays those guys where they're supposed to be played, as not all his players are as versatile as he likes to think.

I'd say Chamakh is a better footballer than Giroud but Olivier is stronger mentally as well as more of a goal-getter.

Chamakh was actually ever only prolific in his last year and a half in Ligue 1. Before that, he'd play many games a season for Bordeaux but would 'create' much more chances than he'd score.

Giroud on the other hand is a scorer. He's good on the ball too but doesn't have AS much technique, creativity and passing as Chamakh. Still more than enough though.

Mentality makes the biggest difference though and I think Olivier is more confident and believes in himself more. Not to mention, very strong physically (Chamakh is fairly tall and jumps high but isn't the strongest).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing both in Arsenal this year. And you're absolutely right that the style of play needs to be changed somewhat as well. These are both direct players, not ones who'll benefit from tika taka stuff.

But wasn't that the problem: Arsene refused to adapt his playing style for Chamakh.
Wenger is a fantastic coach, probably the best i've ever seen, but sometimes he's weird. Why buy Chamakh and Park if they never had a decent chance (or if the team does not play to make the maximum out of Chamakh). Of course a manager sees how players do in training and we don't...but one could ask that if a player disappoints at a club, if that is his failure of the manager's...

I`m with you lots Wenger is up to something. He has abandon or will adapt to a formula that works whether it`s playing 2 different style. We have more direct players than ever. We still have Campell will he stay in Ligue1 on loan , its anyones guess?

Those Fellaini rumours are surfacing again.
I'm all for it, considering how M'Vila is becoming increasingly unlikely (although he didn't do a thing to raise his stocks during the Euros). In addition it seems M'Vila has been a bit of a cunt lately and Wenger probably wouldn't go for another Frenchman with a temper.

But the fact is that we need another midfielder. Think about it:
I) Ramsey had a terrible season overall, his first full season after that horrible injury. He's probably still knackered by now, but guess what... he will be playing with Team GB at the Olympics.
II) Rosicky was already carrying an injury towards the end of the season and aggravated it during the Euros. He does NOT have a good track record of recovering fast.
III) Wilshere had yet another operation in May and is due to be back by early September. I'd add 1 month more to that.
IV) Arteta finished our last season with a relatively serious injury. It's a good thing he didn't play international football this summer, but we know nothing of his recovery.
V) Diaby. Enough said.

That leaves us with Song... and Coquelin... and... Frimpong?

We're in serious trouble if we don't get a midfielder or two, guys.
Fellaini would fit in perfectly in there and, alongside Gervinho, Frimpong and Sagna, would guarantee us at least one trophy: the most horrendous hairstyles in the league :D

PS: bebo, Campbell will go on loan to Real Betis on La Liga.
