Arsenal Thread

That second goal was absurd indeed :D
Every professional player who talks about that, be it Shearer on MOTD or John Carew, every striker recognises just how difficult it is to pull that one off.

Fair play to both Vermaelen and Van Persie, they didn't seem to be limited by injury in any way. But I'm sure they must feel exhausted now.

Let's see if they can make it against AC Milan on tuesday. I'm not even sure it's worth it to play them to be honest. It's a very very long shot.

I would like us to at least go for it and put our strongest team out, if it isn't looking good then replace them at half time.

We don't play Newcastle until Monday, so they will have a bit of a rest anyway.

If Milan score though we need 6! but if we can get to half time maybe 2-0 up then there is hope.

But to be honest, we will have to really go for it and I can see Milan easily scoring....but you never know :))

Look how fast Sczcy got up...amazing!

Like I said before, Deportivo La Coruña once put 4 past a good Milan side to knock them out of the competition.
It's not impossible of course, and Wenger will play our 1st team and those guys will have a point to prove - even if Arsenal is to go out of the competition I'm sure they want to leave on a high note.

I have just turned down a ticket to go see this match. If Arsenal pulls that one off, I will be fuming! For a good reason at least :D

Come on Arsenal!!

That's true Rentboy Depor beat us bad, but they also had the away goal which I think is the crucial thing. We'll see. I'm not sure what to think for this game. We've started hitting very good form and Ibrahimovic is back in the lineup.

One player we didn't have in 04' (damn, Depor was 8 years ago...) was Thiago Silva. Best centre-back I've seen in a decade.

Amazing! I also see 3 or 4 liverpool players arriving in better positions than the defenders.... This team lacks competitiveness as I need more hair!

I can clearly see Arsenal getting in CL positions at the end of the season. And if they manage to score before halftime against Milan, the dreams are there to be dreamed, they have to try at least and start very offensive.

True, time flies!
That was a very good Deportivo side too, Djalminha, Valeron, Pandiani...

As for Thiago Silva, what a player indeed! We miss him badly at Flu. But no way a Brazilian side could hold on to such in demand talent for too long.
And to think his career had been under threat because of illness... would have been such a huge waste.

Arsenal needs to grab an early goal. It's not an impossible task you know, we scored 5 past Tottenham in 28 minutes. What I think to be almost impossible is us keeping a clean sheet.

This is very telling almost like they have no confidences in Szcny to stop the ball. Like preparing to accept the goal before he takes the kick :COAT: That will teach them I actually see players moving back Song on the far left hands on hip

That Deportivo match against Milan was called by the late Raymond Goethals (who won the CL with Olympique Marseille) the best football performance he ever witnessed.

I also think that is the most impressive team performance i ever saw. So it will be very difficult to repeat that for Arsenal and as Stef points out, they had an away goals which indeed makes a significant difference.

Nevertheless, i've seen this Milan team a few times and they never impressed me...but Milan never impressed me after that fantastic CL win against Barcelona.

Well if the defence that Arsenal played against Milan and Liverpool shows up, add to that the super attacking mentality the team is going to have, I think it is very very hard for Arsenal to qualify. Reminds me of when we went all attack on United with a crap defence and ended up taking 4 goals.

You can score, but I doubt Milan won't score. And Milan are a very efficient attacking side with most goals scored in Serie A leading by 10 goals the second team.

I don't want to sound cocky and this might bite me later but I predict a Milan win at the Emirates.

Not cocky at all, sounds like common sense to me.

knowing our luck you will get a goal in the first minute and that will kill it off completely.

...but! I am praying :))

It's a tough decision. To risk our best players in an impossible mission might not be the best move for Wenger. But he would be heavily criticised if he doesn't have a go at least.
I just hope nobody gets hurt or something. Can't help but remember how André Santos got injured in a pointless match against Olympiakos, as we were qualified already.

I don't know if Milan will come with a mixed squad - even with a 4-0 advantage, it would be cheeky.

If we play like we did at Liverpool, just forget about it. RvP goalscoring is legend status by now, but we are facing Thiago Silva, not Carragher.
A lot of people didn't pull their weight on Saturday, especially Walcott and Benayoun. At this point we don't know if Arteta can make it (he had a concussion), Diaby seemed to have a setback and Wilshere's not ready. Maybe Rosicky will be used back there and Benayoun could be the link. Choose from Walcott/Gervinho/Ox for the winger positions and hope for the best.
I hope they show some fearless attitude, take some sort of advantage from the underdog status, where you have nothing to lose.

The key is to play with pride and desire to make up for the fans, given the humiliation at San Siro. These guys need to be fired up for this one. Wenger has to have a proper Pre Game talk with those guys. A great motivator can get amazing things even out of mediocre people.

In the end, at least a win. So the guys can come out to a round of applause and get ready for Newcastle's visit next Monday.

**Update: Benayoun injured too. Great. Maybe Wenger can play a cameo bit there, he was a holding midfielder in his days wasn't he? Pat Rice could have a go too :P

I'm looking forward to it as a neutral. I missed the first leg :(

Obviously best thing would be a 2-0 Arsenal lead at the half. That'd be interesting...

Wow gerd, this Milan side
Is very impressive. They kicked the living shit out of a top 5 EPL side in a massive game, and they might have the best cb in the world in thiago... Guy is a stud. They sure look good to
Me. Milan 2-arse1

Thiago certainly is a good player, one of the best CB's indeed...but i'm not impressed with Milan.
They are a bit like Man Utd, they end up winning but rarely impress (to be fair i ahven't seem them much this season, so maybe it was bad luck...every time i watched them, they had a bad day).

PS: i might also be biased, i'm not a big Milan fan...never was...although under Sacchi they were fantastic.

:CONFUSE: i believe u're forgetting about ancelotti's milan gerd. that team was far more entertaining and impressive than that capello's milan which beated the crap out of crujff in that CL final.
as for the deportivo game, milan hugely underestimated deportivo and irureta. that deportivo team was really good and irureta is one of the most underrated coaches of the last 20 years (and one of the best spanish coaches ever). milan approached that game as if it was a friendly however, and i don't think they'll ever repeat the same mistake after such a slap in the face.

anyway this current milan is a very good team Gerd. much much better than this current arsenal team in pretty much every department.
but arsenal has nothing to lose right now, wich makes them extremely dangerous. if they manage to score 2 goals in the first half, we might get to see a good football game.... otherwise it's gonna be pretty boring imo. with such a huge advantage, milan has no reasons to take any risks and will probably sit back and try to hit arsenal on the counter. watch out for el sharawi; the kid is a freak and if arsenal doesn't step up their game defensively, he might tear them apart.
as a neutral, i hope arsenal will score a goal in the first 10 minutes... an early goal might make the game worth watching. :))

Well Ben, to be honest i will watch the match between Benfica and Zenith...Belgian television preferred this match which is logic since Witsel and Lombaerts are playing for Benfica and Zenith.
I've always had a soft spot for Zenith and i rarely have the chance to watch them...it would be as if Palermo would play CL...since i like Palermo a lot (even more than Zenith) in that case it would be a no brainer for me which match i would watch live...

But, yes i've heard quite a lot about this el sharawi kid, i hope to see him in the near future.

Good luck to both teams and may the best win.

poor u! U denied tickets for this game! ahah =p

Brilliant, so proud of them all for that performance, if only we played better in the first leg?!

Anyway, great performance I was praying for the whole second half for one more goal!
