Arsenal Thread

When he first came he was brilliant, I thought we had somebody special on our hands. But I really don't know what it was either, maybe he thought he was too good and let the hype get to him? who knows? maybe if we had the invincibles team and he was a luxury player, he would have been great. But in the period we are now, we need players to stand up and be counted and work for the team and he rarely does that.

It is a big big shame, because he could have made himself into an Arsenal Favourite or even Legend if he put his mind to it, he really does/did have the ability, but something mentally just isn't right.

I think I remeber reading a couple of years ago that on a few occasions he was thinking about quitting football, even when he was successful. This might be a reason, maybe he just doesn't enjoy playing it as much?

Oh well, if he leaves in January I think most fans wouldn't blink an eyelid at it and would welcome it, as long as we got someone to replace him.

Yeah I fully agree.

His problem has never been ability or talent but more mentally. And to be honest, I think homesickness does have something to do with it too. He seems a guy to me who's very comfortable in Russia where he speaks the language and has a million friends (in home country) but to try to adapt to many new things... it's not for everyone let's just say!

Thing is even at beginning when he was 'brilliant', he was INconsistenly brilliant. So on one weekend, we'd see the Zenit Arshaving scoring what was it 4 goals against Liverpool with slick individual plays and the next week miss sitters, jog instead of run and just be lazy and unproductive. Then again next game, he was a monster and back to poo again the one after. :P

Gerd, I really like the comparison with Reyes. Didn't think of that before but it's a very good one! They have a LOT in common those two! Good players who could've been GREAT but just not professional enough, just not hungry enough, just not hardworking enough.

Looks good but miquel as LB? his o better then santos/gibbs/ And where does wilshere fit in? sub for artea or ramsey?

Santos and Gibbs are injured thats why he has put him there. Wilshere will rotate with Ramsey and Arteta in the midfield when he is back.

I think Bebo was putting the team for tomorrow not the team he wants to see for ever.

everton is having injury problems too. I WOULD LOVE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE KNOWING OUR PLAYERS HAD A GOOD REST AND SCORE A FEW GOALS. alumunia is on the bench hope he stays there 7-0 would be great I pray no free kicks for Baine....

seeing almunia on the bench triggered a response from my brain almost like a remembrance of traumatic events.
regarding january transfers: Jack will be back! -> ALANS! :)

even though the statues don't resemble too much their real life counterparts, things like this underline our history, materialize the glories of the past and present, are what makes the difference between clubs with historical value and those with petrolium value.

I do wish the statues were better though. C'mon is it too hard to ask for it to actually LOOK like Henry! If you're gonna do it, do it properly. :P

I like the gesture but gotta be honest, I'm disappointed with the 'result'.

i think it´s bad angle of photo and bad (not natural) lights, i bet it looks better from other view and without the lamps..

I still scratch my head and wonder why the fuck Henry left us. he should have finished his career at arsenal.

Its clear he has such huge love for our club. i reckon he moved because he was divorcing his wife and wanted to get out of this place.

Its a shame because i feel Henry never wanted to leave arsenal and it shows.

Yes, definitely Brek Shea, hair gives it away haha. Would love to see him go to the Premier League, but I don't think he will with how MLS seems to handle those things. Would be especially happy if he played for a big club, like Arsenal.

I think Henry did want to leave and he won the champs league etc and played for one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I don't think he regrets it. But it is clear he loves the club and that is great.

I really hope he doesn't play for us again, he wont be as good obviously and it jsut won't be right.

I would have loved to see a Bergkamp statue.

He probably would have won CL with arsenal if he stuck with us though. he was pretty close to doing so and when he left, Arsenal were winning leagues left right and center so it wasnt as if he left the team at the sate they was in for the past 5+ seasons.

CL is good and all no doubt about that but its clear he doesnt have next to no affiliation with barcelona. never had and just used them to pick up a medal. That CL medal would have meant SOO MUCH more if he had won it from arsenal

I stand by what i said. i think he diddnt really want to leave and he just left on a whim due to personal marriage issues. thats my take on it.

Had he stayed at arsenal i reckon he would have been to this day playing for us in a kind of "giggs/role model" role. And i bet just having him in training/dressing room would have done soo much wonders for the younger players

I think he left at the right time, he wasn't projecting himself well in the last season with us, rolling his eyes and being pissed off with all of the players around him. When he left our team looked more of a team, just before he left it was all about him and we were not playing that well.

But it is all subjective, if you feel the reason he left was because of him leaving his wife then that is fine, I'm sure it had a big role to play in it. But if you ask me he definately wanted to leave and play for Barca, I think both himself and Arsenal knew it was time for him to move on.

He even said himself "Because of my seniority, the fact that I was captain and my habit of screaming for the ball, they would sometimes give it to me even when I was not in the best position. So in that sense it was good for the team that I moved on."

and it was pretty much regarded that it was right.

The next season from what I remember our team played well and were more of a cohesive unit....but we haven't won anything for a while, but that isn't because we sold Henry, its because we didn't replace him and others in our team properly due to many reasons.

Anyway, he is a legend and he was fantastic for Arsenal.

by the way, he left in 2007 the last league we won was in 2004 and the FA cup in 2005, then we got to the champs league final in 2006. So we definately weren't winning leagues left right and centre before he left.

You could argue the same w/ Cesc not providing the same caliber of players ,but surrounding w/ potential. I see something different in this future w/ the level we have in ....Ramsey, Theo, Jack , Frimpong, AlexOx,Ryo, Song , Gibbs , Campbell , Coquelin and maybe Jarl. I just wish campbell was here to work w/ RVP .

Well How come it worked out great when we kept berkghamp for the rest of his career? him being in the team diddnt affect us. you could argue that once he left thats when arsenal went downhill

Since we moved to the emirates we aint wont a trophy innit and berkhamp retired in the final season at highbury.

Highbury was a magical place for a football supporter, i loved this stadium..so bad it has been demolished

this is something i fear for as LFC supporter, if we one day move out from Anfield...

Anfield has this magic of past in it..

For one Bergkamp is a completely different player and person than Henry. He didn't have the arrogance of Henry.

You could argue that Arsenal have done nothing since Henry left and that is why, but I don't, as the team were going downwards anyway imo and him leaving gave our team a boost and cohesiveness. If we would have spent some money and brought in some key players, then we could have done much better, but it is all ifs and buts.

I don't get the last point? I would have kept Bergkamp forever, but I don't think if we would have kept him, we would have won lots of things.

I agree with everything Bobby said about Henry. His divorce and personal life may have also had a role to play but he definitely wanted to go to Barca and saw it as a real opportunity and took it and you know what it was for the best, he doesn't regret it either. He played for the world's best team, got a CL medal which IS a HUGE deal (Even if it doesn't mean as much as taking one with your fav team) because years from now when you're retired and you look at your accolades and what you've won, every great player would like to have either won the world cup or the CL or something huge like that. They don't want that missing from their resume. In Spain, he got to experience La Liga and he has no regrets.

And yeah I think Arsenal even benefitted from his departure as he was getting a bit agitated and rolling eyes at team-mates in last season and right after he left, everyone actually seemed to come closer together and play more like a 'team' and results somewhat improved initially actually. RvP and Adebayor stepped up more and the whole team looked a little more rejuvenated. And with or without Titi, Arsenal was going through a rough time already and didn't look like they were gonna win the league let alone CL so no I don't for one second believe they would have if Henry had stayed. Thierry himself knew this too so he joined a team that had a much better chance of doing so as Cesc has done now and he reaped the rewards actually. This way, he is and always will be an Arsenal legend but he also got to experience Spain and Barca and win CL there. Win win situation and right decision.

Yay we won! two very tricky away games now to get over, if we can come out of them positively then hopefully we can keep the momentum going.

Away against City is going to be extremely tough though.
