Arsenal Thread

www.Arsenal.com said:
Robin van Persie will wear the Arsenal No 10 shirt next season.

The Dutchman has taken on the number vacated by William Gallas, whose contract ended on June 30.

Van Persie follows in the footsteps of his compatriot Dennis Bergkamp, who donned the No 10 shirt during his Arsenal days.

Carlos Vela has also changed his squad number. He is now No 11.

ta ta Gallas.

On other news Emirates is to be changed back to "HIGHBURY" the clockend returns as well. Last time I went to Arsenal it was at Highbury it seems I will never go to Emirates in my life time

Are you sure, beboq? I know about the Clockend and North Bank return, but I'm not sure about the name of the stadium. I thought Arsenal had to call it Emirates until 2020 or something, due to sponsorship contract obligations.

On another note, good to see Robin picking up no. 10 :)

It was about time we had some representative of good football wearing it. I just hope he picks up his best form again, as he had a below par World Cup.

Yeah I doubt that they will call it Highbury now. Emirates sponsered us and paid a shit load of money for us to call it that. Maybe it will be called Highbury again someday though :)) (I only heard about the name changes of the stands)

But the changing of the names of all the other stuff is great :))

Fingers crossed Persie can keep fit and his new number makes him have a Dennis Bergkamp season ;))

Very raunchy ...please no children to view this :LMAO:

As long as they are bonding, I don't care ;))

Yeah it would be nice for it to be called Highbury again. Or even Ashburton Grove....But Highbury would be nice.

I think it's silly to call it Highbury. Highbury is your old stadium, it was great for you and you've got nice memories but you moved and naming the new stadium the same thing would be weird I think. It was called that because it was in Highbury, the real name was Arsenal Stadium or something wasn't it?!

Ashburton Grove would be a good name if you were losing the corporate-ness of the current name.

EDIT: Just seen this
Due to UEFA regulations on stadium sponsors, during UEFA Champions League matches the stadium is not officially referred to as Emirates Stadium, as Emirates are not an official sponsor of the Champions League competition; other stadia, such as the Allianz Arena in Munich, have fallen foul of this rule before. UEFA refer to the stadium as Arsenal Stadium, which was the official name of the stadium at Highbury
Interesting!! Never seen it referred to as that in a CL game I don't think?

That is interesting never knew that.

The Emirates is about a 5 minute walk from where the old stadium used to be and is probably a bit closer to Highbury and Islignton station (Highbury corner). So it probably has more right to be called Highbury :))

Anyway, I agree Ashburton Grove would be better probably. Just so there is a distinction between the two when referencing.

I hate the fact that it is called the Emirates Stadium though, so hopefully it will change to a better name in the future. Although with the money it generates I can't see it happening.

All would be good signings but would have to come at the expense of a current first teamer. Only Stekelenberg would be a positive change. Suarez is class but do you need him with RvP, Chamakh, Walcott, Arshavin, Wilshere, Vela and the other youths?

The goalie would be great.

If the right back can also play CB then it could all be good?

Suarez is a top quality forward player from the looks of the world cup. Vela still hasn't impressed and Walcott will still be played as a winger.

So I think it will be good to have Van persie (who is injury prone) Chamkah, Bendtner and Suarez all possible to play as a two up top and to shuffle a bit in all competitions.

We don't really really need Suarez, but I i wouldn't be upset to get him.

has anyone in the past bought half of another team before

Barcelona bought 80% of the Ajax team in '99 :)

Van der Wiel is better at attacking than Sagna, but I'm not too sure about his defensive qualities. Suarez is awesome and has the spirit and desire to win that we crave to see in this Arsenal squad. As for Stekelenburg, I don't like him. Hasn't proven himself in this WC IMO... Actually, remember that goal from outside the box against Uruguay?

I'm just desperate for a new keeper. Looks like we are going for Schwarzer more than anybody else, which is confusing. Especially the amounts we are meant to be offering for him. He has the experience, but he isn't a great keeper and we need a great keeper.

Oh well lets just wait and see.

So ,I assume most of the talk from barca are for the fans to feel they did all they could and not for cesc, because like xavi said "Cesc loves the fans too much at Arsenal and won`t say anything to hurt them" bizarre nonetheless saying nothing is pretty much the same. I thought more of the lines of if you request a transfer you lose on the loyal incentive . At least they concede again it`s a no GO!
http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896...avier-bordas-confirms-arsenal-will-not-budge-

I think fab is mentally strong ,because being w/ them lots from 6-8 weeks (since his injuries) I`m sure he felt like he never left,But and this is important once he comes back I hope he remembers there is nothing like being a King. If barca doesn`t win this season and we win something that bit could make the difference. Wenger needs to know winning something could change everything FA,League and CL.

I think he will want to leave anyway. If we win things, then he leaves on a high. If we don't then it just justifies the move even more.

I can't see him staying longer than this season unfortunately. But hopefully Barcelona offer the right price, otherwise I think it will get ugly from Fabs point of view and he will put in a transfer request etc.

But Barca are dispicable cunts, so they will continue to let their players mouth off and they will mouth off and do everything they can to get him cheaper.

The longer Barca players and staff keep saying stuff, the less Arsenal are going to want to sell him to them. so therefore the only way a transfer will happen, is if Fab puts in a request. Because Barca are never going to stop saying stuff.

Its a very unfortunate situation.

I just hope Fab plays well this season and doesn't let it all get to him.

Regarding Fabregas it looks like he's staying for now with the Barcelona players reacting quite childishly "Haha who cares we'll get him next year". One thing I think is you'll definitely get the fee Wenger is looking for, Cesc has a great relationship with Wenger so im sure he'll have told Cesc the situation that he can't go until Barcelona pay the correct fee for him and I think he'll understand and remain patient as he has done since with his "Ive said my bit its up to the clubs".

I don't think it will get ugly but I think he'll be a Barcelona player come June 2011. Also get used to every time he winces, frowns, gets angry or simply isn't playing well the commentator will say something along the lines of he doesn't his heads in Barcelona/he doesn't wannt be here.

I hope you are right about the fee. But what if they don't offer a good enough amount next season? and they keep mouthing off? we are back to the same situation and both will be stubborn either way.

He is not going to stay around for another 4years if he really wants to move. Fab is trying not to piss anybody off now, but there is no way he is going to be like that for ever. He will get frustrated and Barca will tell him that the move is more likely to go ahead if he puts in a tranfer request etc. If he thinks it's his only chance, then the chances of him doing it are high.

I really hope we do well this season and he leaves on a high and we spend this year sourcing a top class replacement. I really hope it all doesn't turn bitter.

You are right about the commentators commentating on him if he doesn't play well for a game or two. I need to train myself now not to get angry and to not throw stuff at the TV :))

We had it with Ronaldo, he was nowhere near as good in his final season as the one before but he was still good. It'll be similar to that.

That had to do with his Ankle surgery as well as a shift in formation (his position), when it came to the end of the season he regained his form and we changed our formation back to the season before.

So who is going to replace Fabregas once he leaves? Will it be Song and Denilson in midfield? With diaby on the side if there is injuries? Do you think that's dynamic enough to win the league?

Denilson hasn't shown any signs that he will be anywhere near as good as Fabregas.

Diaby needs to be more consistant and then who knows. Wishere looks very promising, but he is very very young, so we will need someone else before he is ready I think. If Ramsey continues to impress after his injury, then he is another possibility. I also think Nasri could be good in the Fabregas role, but we will never know until he does it.

so we have a few players with the potential to replace him. But when we sell him we should have alot of money to invest in a really good player, if the others don't look capable at the that time.

It will be extremely hard to replace Fab, but it wont be impossible and it would be great if one of the players we already have can play there when he leaves.

Doesn't sound very promising. A repeat of 3rd/4th is in the cards again maybe?
