VAN PERSIE INJURY BOOST
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been boosted by the news that Robin van Persie's knee injury is not as serious as first feared.
Wenger had been concerned that the Dutchman had damaged his cruciate ligaments which would mean a lengthy time on the sidelines.
However, scan results have revealed Van Persie has only damaged medial ligaments.
The forward still faces four to six weeks out of action but this is a considerably shorter recovery time than for a cruciate injury, much to the delight of Wenger.
"His injury is a medial knee ligament," said Wenger.
"At one stage we were scared it was a cruciate but we had good news and the scan was positive. But it is still a long injury."
Meanwhile, Wenger believes Arsenal - who have won their opening two qualifying Group H games - can effectively clinch their place in the UEFA Champions League knock-out stages if they maintain their focus against Slavia Prague on Tuesday.
However, Wenger - who is still without Philippe Senderos (back) - is wary that his side must not get too confident against the underdogs from the Czech Republic.
"If we win tomorrow 90 per cent of the work is done. It is a good mental test because we will see how we cope when we are favourites," Wenger added.
"Sometimes the games that look easy at the start turn out to be the hardest. That is what we learned from last season.
"It is a tricky tie because you could think because we have beaten Sparta Prague we will beat Slavia Prague. We are the favourites but Champions League competition doesn't work like that.
"We had problems to beat Steaua Bucharest. We had to dig very deep and they have beaten Steaua and scored two goals at Sevilla. If we are not focused we will have big problems with them."
