Milan shatters Betis dreams!!
Betis 1:1 AC Milan* (1:1 aggr)
Fernando 82'(pen)
Gilardino 90'
Betis were just seconds away from a famous win, when Gilardino
equalized in injury time. Betis had dominated most of the game and were
denied by Dida on a few occasions. With 8 minutes to go and extra-time
looming, Mitea burst into the Milan box and was tripped up by Nesta.
The penalty was coolly slotted home by Fernando. Betis then slowed
down their game running down the clock. In the last minute from a Betis
corner, they started passing it back to the half-way line.
Ewerthon got into a tangle with Kaka, who quickly released Inzaghi down
the wing. He crossed to Sheva who headed into the path of Gilardino,
who beat the keeper.
Betis players sunk to their knees in despair as the final whistle
blew seconds later. Milan players were celebrating as if they had
won the tournament, they knew how close they were to an exit.
Manager Mathejo spoke to the press:
"Football can be so cruel. We did not deserve to go out.
We had the better of them. Once we took the lead, I thought it
was over. We kept the ball in the dying seconds, and were passing
it around the half-way line. That was a big mistake because Milan
had more players near our defence and once they got the ball,
they outnumbered us. My job is to lift our mood, because the boys are devastated tonight.
We should now focus on what will still be a fantastic season if
we can win La Liga. We are 6 pts clear with 9 games to go."
AC Milan's Ancelotti spoke to the press:
I told you we would score, but we left it so late, it was too tense.
Congratulations to our team. But also Betis, who outplayed us tonight and
maybe were the better team. But my team have great spirit. We never gave up
and our experience was the deciding factor in the end."
