Eurogamer - TopSpin 2K25 Players Furious at Server Issues Impacting Single-Player Career Mode

Really interesting point:

What's more, a notice for the game across all stores reads: "Please note that TopSpin 2K25's online features are scheduled to be available until 31st December 2026 though we reserve the right to modify or discontinue online features without notice."

This certainly suggests the servers may not be renewed after this date, which would mean even the game's single-player career mode would be unavailable due to the online requirement.

The way my backlog is looking at the moment, it may well take me until 2027 to get around to this...

This is crap 2K has done for years with their NBA game. I remember I had a blast playing myLeague (an offline mode) back on 2k16. Multiple seasons played, all around good time. Fast forward a year or so after I initially started playing, I wanted to revisit my old save. Only to find out that the servers were now offline. And, as a result, all my files got corrupted because they needed access to the server. My settings, rosters, draft classes, my saves, all of which were offline content. I lost all of it because the server was gone.

And since then, it's even worse for myCareer. I think 2k17 was the last one where you could play that mode offline. Since then, you need to be online to play it and that means your save is then rendered dead when the servers are taken offline.

Online connectivity to play something by myself is one of the absolute worst decisions modern gaming makes and it completely puts me off this game. Especially as someone who doesn't buy them yearly.

I'm yet to play a popular sports game online that isn't like this. Sadly.
One of the thousand reasons I never play online (unless it's something like Rocket League or Headbangers). When they implement the option to play a friend I might give it a go playing with some of you here. This way we can play with level 5 created characters and have proper fun with more realistic gameplay.
I also hope we'll be given the option to disable the meter (I disabled it right away in the career mode) when playing vs friends and also have private lobbies where we'll be able to create a tournament. All the above are just standard features which only take 4-5 dev working days to implement. As a quite old gamer I'm shocked by this huge degrade in videogaming.

What was fifa 13 or 14? I used to play online exclusively with India specifically because of this. And you know the second I scored, whoever I was playing always quit lol.

But yeah I have no doubt that this game will be exactly the same as the rest of them online

Private lobbies are coming soon and also the licenced roster will have 4 pros added.
Casuals should stay away from this game and I hope Hangar 13 devs won't listen to their suggestions. They're complaining about serving which is perfectly fine as it is. Career mode energy needs some balancing but again us hardcore tennis gamers don't mind grinding a bit more on this mode as there's no retirement mechanics.
YouTubers/content creators please go play other games or stop suggesting changes. I don't have any problem with this guy who is likeable tbh compared to others but he only just played after so many weeks a match with real tennis rules and he doesn't even know how the scoring works:

Anyway, what we need is a full Tournament Mode and a Season Mode (1-15 years). This is by far the best commercial tennis videogame ever created (I'm not talking about TE or FAT, these are not comparable), me and many others kept our promise and supported it, 2K is obliged imo to give the green light to Hangar 13 to expand the game and they should listen to us. I'm already providing feedback.
Spoiler: I haven't played a single online mode yet. I might consider it when private lobbies are introduced early June.

Hi, are there currently any mods for the PC version that add official players? Thanks

Sorry but there is the career.... there is already the offline game..
Career mode isn't playable offline. You need to be connected to 2K servers to even have the option not greyed out in the main menu. Exhibition is the only mode playable offline. Any modification to the career mode structure and files (players, tournaments etc) will result in an instant ban of your account and you won't be able to play the mode unless you're able to emulate their servers or bypass Denuvo and online requirement to make the mode playable offline.
As I said we can mod the game but it's useless right now.

how can you call this realistic? I think the hardcore tennis gamers dont like this at all. How the AI is moving, how you can take fairly unrealistic shots. Only the graphics are okay-ish.

I didn't say anywhere in my post that it's realistic. I said it's the best commercial tennis videogame.
Also if you compare the game to AO Tennis, TWT etc it is way more realistic. The most popular sport in the world, football, has one videogame that plays like ice hockey at best and another which is F2P...

Anybody who wants to play some friendly matches now that the feature is in game after the last patch? We can share our 2K Account names to add each other.

Just tried on Steam as its free this weekend. Jesus before you can even play the game forces so many disclaimers, agreements and even forces me to log in to my 2k account on my phone just to agree to some other terms.

Then you have to watch an unskippavle cutscene, win the demo match and watch and unskippavle celebration before you can even get to the main menu. I know it's not very surprising in games nowadays but this is one of my most aggressive experiences with this.

Jeez, just to play a trial of a game in not even that interested in.

I thought it was pretty rubbish introduction.
Having to create a 2k account which I don't want to play a trial of a game which is OK.

Need to play it some more but it has my biggest hate in tennis games, that the computer will always try and hand hold you when running so it will start running in the correct direction for you and you just never feel in complete control - So stopped playing it as couldn't find an option to disable this.
Plus the fact no matter how hard I tried I never managed to hit the ball out of play on the hard difficult.

It is definitely the best tennis game available on the consoles but due to lack of players and what on first impressions is pretty arcadey gameplay this game isn't for me.

I agree with you about the extra disclaimers etc but the opening match was a nice touch imo to get you into the mood.
If you are not interested in the game or tennis in general I don't see the point. We have already analysed here the pros and cons of the game.

Top Spin has the best "hand holding" mechanic for running which you can also override manually without problems. Have you played the other tennis games in the market?
Turn off all visual aids and start a career on hard or very hard. Then capture a video and show us that you aren't making any unforced errors.

I played a bit of career and tried exhibition. Not really impressed to be honest.

What I like is that most of the shots are not perfect, just like in a real tennis.

What I really don't like is dumb AI, lack of unforced errors (both AI and human, it's almost impossible to hit net or out), and just all that 2K dumb stuff which would be very long rant I'd like to skip.

I don't understand how you can have this high budget game and still be so behind Full Ace and Tennis Elbow.

Glad I'm not the only one. I even had to create an account as I never had one. Just to notice after 10 minutes in the game that tennis just isn't for me.

I have tried and just can't get into it.
The fact you rarely miss and most shots just tend to be very central rather than hitting the lines.

No matter how many options I tried to find as well just couldn't find anything to disable the kind of automatic control for you which is in a lot of newer tennis games, but least in them I found how to disable.

I tried and tried and finally managed to hit the net and ball out a couple of times, mainly by using the lob button.
Although if you keep missing the timing it just means you will lose the point.

The worse thing about the game though is complete lack of players.

Glad they gave a free trial to the game as it means don't need to waste any money on the game.

Also I know Fear will attack this post that you can hit the lines with practice and so on - But if a game doesn't grab you and just isn't very good I am not going to waste time learning a game which I don't actually think is that great.

I would disagree with you that you can't hit lines is a bad thing. That's actually one of the few things I liked about the game. That's something what is really tricky about tennis games. Even Full Ace or Tennis Elbow, with a little bit of practice, you are able to hit almost perfect shots on lines all the time. But that's not how real tennis looks, even top players are not able to do it consistently.

But that's just one thing, rest of the game is shit šŸ˜

This is the only "AAA" tennis videogame that takes into account ball placement, positioning and shot quality/type to determine a return. So I find it rather strange you guys saying the gameplay is shit. It's fair to criticise the game about roster, modes etc but I can't really understand the criticism about the gameplay which is decent at least.
I have explained the auto movement. Game needs to be done from scratch if you want full manual control and it's not easy to implement . Check all Big Ant's efforts, even with the option for manual control via a slider they have failed to implement a working feature like this. This results to your player stalling a lot of times. VT4 which is regularly praised here had auto movement also.

It is the auto movement that completely ruins the game for me, feels like I only have semi control over the player.

I am sure if you keep grinding and grinding there may be a good game in there somewhere but I just can't be arsed to play it for hours and hours to try and find it.

Does anyone else find this game extremely blurry? Even at 4k it feels like a blurry mess. Compare this to top spin 4 on ps3 emulator at 4k, that game looks very clear and sharp. It almost feels like I need to wear glasses when playing TP2k25.

I wouldn't say it's extremely blurry but certainly it's not as clear as TS4 maybe because they use some filters alongside lighting. If you put volumetric to low it's better.
