few difficult years perhaps but long-term Europe can triumph, I know it


my thoughts with fans of the affected teams. Since Super League seems to be inspired by US leagues, few years from now on teams could be literally turned into franchises. Imagine someone buying Barcelona and moving a license to Tokyo or Los Angeles...

This was inevitable. Happy to see it happen now than later when the gap between G12 and the rest would be even massive. I actually kinda wanna watch the new format Eurofootball again, after years of break.

Have courage. Get ready for change. Get ready for difficult times. This is a chance for all of us non-interested in corporation brand soccer club FC. My thoughts are with UEFA and European FAs, I hope they can lay out a foundation for more equal, less inflated, and consequently - much more fair and engaging football scene.

Dont know how its going to end, but FIFA will have to play a rough hand or game of chicken to see who blinks first.

A disgrace to the game. A sport created by the common man for all to enjoy has been taken over and milked by the greediest of greedy.
 
An utter disgrace. Let's say some of the founding teams have a slump and start playing below mid table, they should still play in some Super League? How can some clubs just decide to do this? Are certain clubs now bigger than football itself?

It will only live if fans let is live. I'm shocked European clubs took such an American approaching by monopolizing club football. It's a sham. So basically City 20 years ago wouldn't be included...but now is. These guys are filthy rich, what else do you want ? Let us normal people enjoy the game we love.
 
Joke for me is UEFA, FIFA, Sky and the Premier League banging on about killing football when they've been doing it for years.

All that's happened is someone's come along and done it better and they're just tinkled they'll be missing out on the money.

Interestingly though, if I was a Konami executive right now I would be making some phone calls, I mean what's EA going to do buy another isp and release two games........they must be spitting feathers
 
I hate it, another milestone in a long line of events to complete the commercialisation of football... lining the pockets of those at the top and everyone else can f' off with no access to the exclusive bubble.

As an aside - with FIFA and the domestic leagues taking such a stern stance on the teams involved in the ESL, I wonder how this will effect the licensing situation for PES/FIFA 2022. It could present an opportunity for Konami to work with more of these clubs individually, or even go for a full ESL license. Just a thought... trying to take a positive from this sh*tshow lol.
 
This is a big shame. The big clubs are destroying what is the biggest appeal of football.
Let me explain.
Let's take athletics, that is a sport. Football is a game. If you have 100 athletes and you let them run (no matter what distance), the best runner will win 90% of the time.
Football is the different. It is the one game were a weaker team can win. Remember te excitement when Leicester won the league, that was great.

What these 12 teams are doing now is killing the hings factor which is so important for football's popularity.

And are these teams really the ones who deserve to be in a a superleague? Of course not. I'm a Spurs fan, but Spurs don't deserve to be there at all. Spurs are as big in Europe than Anderlecht (both won 3 Europa Cups). Spurs played a CL final, you say? Well Celtic, Steau Bukarest, Feyenoord and Porto won one. Ajax won 4 ClL's.

Juventus are the driving force behind this superleague, in the last 3 CL's they were eliminated by Ajax, Lyon and Porto...enough said.

I've talked about this with my kids (21 and 18 years old). My daughter is against. She says it's not fair: Leicester are currently third and they deserve to play CL. My son thinks it's a wonderfull idea. I'm afraid that my son is more representative for the new breed of fans. He is fan of players (in his case KDB) and not of clubs. If KDB would have changed club, so would he have done. He and his friends are interested in the stars. What i do ask myself how they would think about this if Bellgium would not have stars like KDB, Hazard, Lukaku or Courtois (we never had players like that and when they stop the odds are that we will never have them again). I'm pretty sure that sooner or later this superleague will happen.

If you look at it from a Belgian point of view, it doens't make that big a difference. Belgian clubs will never be in the superleague and theoretically they have a chance to win the CL, but we all know that this will never happen. From our point of view that this wonderful crop of players that we now have (and that is ageing) will never play in Belgium. You English don't know your luck, that you can see the best players in the world live on the pitch. THere was a time when players like Vertonghen, Hazard, KDB, Kompany and others were in the teams of the season of your league, but we can never see them here in Belgium except when they play for our national team. That is my biggest frustration and this is coming from someone who loves English football for more than 45 years. Rant over, i'm sorry.
 
This is an insult to all the teams like Atalanta that planned their growth carefully, in a sustainable way, and are now up there fighting with the top teams (and it's not only this season, it's three or four seasons that they are there).

As a Milanista I do hope Milan, Inter and Juve get suspended from Serie A immediately for this.
No reason to suspend us also from UEFA competitions (seeing that all of us have already been knocked out anyway) but they should prevent us from joining UEFA competitions in the next season and as long as this "we're rich and you're not, so we can do whatever we want" thing goes on.
 
this idea was firstly in the air while Platini was in charge of Uefa, to transform UCL into a league playing system between the best culbs in europe, also to transform domestic leagues to play with similar level teams from other countries in same league system. but this is absolute disgrace. as a fan I am ashamed from the idea that club like Man Utd will this happen, Glazers ruin the club in the last 7-8 years. Only money money money, no tradition, no competition, nothing. the clubs deserve to be punished for this drastically! players will leave clubs if they were unable to play for their nations in Fifa and Uefa cometitions. some of them will go for money but football will never be the same after this. this looks like NBA, no one can be relegated. disgracefull...
 
As an Arsenal fan, I'm sad that our club is one of the 12 founders on this new "Super League" thing... I view this as a shortcut/cheating way to success at Europe level.. As we are now we don't deserve it (success in Europe level), not with our performance in the last couple of years

This is different, though.

Having a European SuperLeague instead of the UCL but still ruled by UEFA would be a good thing. It would even make sense!
Would this mean that, say, only 12 teams would qualify for it instead of 32 and the other ones would go to UEL and Conference League? I'd be OK with that.
If they wanted it to be a league, I can't see how they could include more than 12 teams (if you want to play two legs they would be 22 matches which is already a lot).
In that case, what would be important is that a team should earn their pass to the SuperLeague with RESULTS on the pitch (winning the domestic league or being the reigning champion of the SuperLeague)... Not with the money they have and definitely not by invitation.
And I'd be 100% OK with Milan being out of that if we don't play good enough in Serie A.

This is what scares me the most of the new competition: teams taking part in this are not the ones that season by season deserve it, but are (for the big part) teams that are there because "I brought the football so I make the rules" like it happens with kids.
This, as I already said, is like spitting in the face of teams like Atalanta.
Atalanta are team who plan their development, who value their youngsters, who are there fighting with the top teams because they did good season after season.
They DESERVE to be in the top-flight European competition because of their RESULTS and not because they once were football giants (Milan, I'm looking at you. šŸ™„).

This is what would cease to exist should a competition like this ever see the light. Meritocracy. At least, the bit of it that's left in today's football.
 
Club football has been a joke to me for years, driven by greed with 99% of the matches on expensive subscription pay-TV channels, still crammed with adverts (usually online betting/casinos) and even team shirt sponsors are dominated by betting companies. 8/20 in the PL and they are even more prevalent in the Championship.

The elite clubs are usually bankrolled by blood/oil/inheritance money, the successes of the teams on the pitch depending on which billionaire fancied having them as their plaything. Someone with thousands of times more money than we could ever dream of basically using real life sport as their P2W game of choice rather than FUT or a mobile game and we're supposed to still care about the outcomes just because we were born or live near the stadium.

Elite club football has been totally soulless for me for a long time so this hasn't ruined it as as it already was ruined. The only times I do support one team over another is when there's one of the extreme greedy/bankrolled clubs involved, hoping they lose.

Even that's miserable this year as the CL semis are between Real/Chelsea/PSG/Man City. 3 of the most egregious examples plus Real, so I guess I'll "support" them, though in a few months time I won't give a toss or probably even remember who won it as I care that little.

Maybe an extreme shake-up like this could become a positive if the non-Superleague competitions become more accessible to the fans, with more sporting integrity as all the greediest bastards are concentrated in one super shitty competition so everyone else can get on with better, more competitive football leagues without them (provided they get kicked out of domestic competitions, which I hope they do).

As a Milanista, I hope the three Italian teams falling for this (but also the other ones around Europe) get kicked out of domestic competitions immediately.
I don't give a f**k if we're 2nd in the table right now and we've been working hard this year towards our first UCL appearance after several seasons. It doesn't matter anymore.
And, as a welcomed side-effect if we, Inter and Juve get excluded from Serie A, Inter wouldn't be crowned champions. This wouldn't hurt either. šŸ˜
Joking of course, the side-effect would be Atalanta most likely winning it, and they deserve it for all they've done in the recent years.
 
There's not much I can add to the outrage, and sadness. But I'd like to make a personal point.

What introduced me to European football wasn't a love of Liverpool (the EPL team nearest/dearest to me, even though I'm not a Liverpool fan). It wasn't even epic modern finals, like Bayern v Man Utd.

It was seeing two strong teams I knew nothing about, and learning something about them both - particularly if the broadcaster did a decent job pre-match, giving you a flavour of each team's domestic situation, and the culture of the clubs. Discovering their players for the first time, and seeing their skills unlock parts of the pitch (rather than watching the same overpaid, overhyped players week after week).

Which is why, when I saw this tweet:



I got excited. Really excited.

Leeds v Lazio? Yes please. Sampdoria - a name I know of, but I couldn't tell you anything about their current team or their recent fortunes.

I would rather see these teams face each other in a meaningful European competition (not a "Conference League") and know what it means to them all, than watch Liverpool limp to a 0-0 draw against Real Madrid until the end of fucking time.

So - if they all leave for this Super League, and FIFA, UEFA and the FAs have the bollocks to ban them all (which I really hope they do, though I can't see it)... I might actually enjoy the UCL again, rather than half-watching while I look at my phone because it's just so, so boring the way it is right now.

But...

Look at the comments on that tweet.

One of the highest-rated replies is "who would watch that shit" (ouch) - and that, my friends, is modern life in a nutshell.

Who would watch it? A lot of people over the age of 40 (I'm not there yet but well on the way) - and not many under that, who have been hypnotised by the glory of the Premier Leagueā„¢, UEFA Champions Leagueā„¢ etc. and are only interested in the elite of the elite of the elite.

These people have favourite players, who they follow as they switch from team to team - they don't support a club, much less their local club. Football is now a global game, and local pride has been robbed by money-driven competitions, fast-tracked by TV subscriptions (and accelerated even further by Covid).

Their whole view of football is dripping in dopamine. The European Super League is just cutting off the fat, as far as they're concerned. They are the consumers that matter. Their disposable income goes on FIFA packs, unnecessary fourth kits and Now TV passes, to watch players with no connection to the towns they represent battle each other, financed by oil magnates, torturers and worse.

As always, money talks and without everyone cancelling their subscriptions tomorrow, nothing changes. And it won't. All we can do (as an older generation who aren't interested in this shit) is "opt out", save our money and forget football beyond our local clubs.

They (the owners of the "big clubs") are banking on us not doing that... and we probably won't. So we all deserve this hell.

UEFA (apparently backed by national football associations) is officially threatening to exclude the SuperLeague teams from domestic and European football:

Let's see if this is enough for some to reconsider (for example Inter who have for the first time in God knows how many years the chance to win the Scudetto again and that, if this goes to its full extent, are risking to be excluded from Serie A) or if the clubs are committed to go ahead anyway.

Hopefully clubs will reconsider, but I'd never underestimate the greed of certain people.
 
People supporting UEFA in this drama like they aren't going to do the same thing, UEFA has been planning to revamp UCL, with system and rules just like ESL, basically it's just a matter of who initiate it first, and here we are Perez having lots of big clubs in their side. Football has been dying already, but with these new types of competitions, drama, everything it just enter a new all time low.

And about all of those threats given to ESL clubs stated that players who participating there can't play in FIFA World Cup, Euro, etc, they're just bluffing isn't it, they can't really kickstart those competitions with big names missing, they would get a big revenue loss, viewers would dropped massively.

I'm not supporting any of Perez sides or UEFA FIFA ones, it's just that I hate these type of competitions, those ESL one, with big clubs into one league and with Knockout system later on, UCL is just perfect as it is, maybe their organizations are corrupts, but the formats are already near perfect imo, but then they're planning to revamp it as well, sigh.
 
My solution was to simply stop watching men's football.

Can't wait 'til football starts being played by businessmen in suits, hell they might turn it into a Monopoly-esque board game. xD
