The Retro-PES Corner

@mattmid and @miguelfcp , I completely agree with you guys (what a surprise :D). After all, the first thing that I tought about this game around 20 years ago, in another lifetime, when I was a 12 years old child playing the first Iss Pro (the one that still had completely fictional national teams: Allejo, Galfano etc.) for the first time at my cousin's home, was "those Brazilian guys move faster and better than the other teams, like in real life.. that's crazy, Fifa (only game I had, since I only had a pc) doesn't feel like this at all". Individuality is what always set apart this game indeed.

And by reflex, using weaker teams make up for a very deep, different and tangible gameplay, even if in my opinion a rotation with stronger teams (maybe with some specific goal) just to better appreciate and constantly remind the difference between the experiences, is very healthy.

regarding what I said earlier about a wiki: we'd cover probably everything possible about ISS era to PES2008 PS2 or something like that... dunno if my post went through about it, though, earlier.
There is so much you could cover. DB wise a good start is a team list. Would be interesting to see player comparisons.

@WhoAteMeDinner They just don't make them like that any more :APPLAUD: Macco has been excellent for me but Hamsun has been my real surprise. I think I must have always sold him because I really don't remember him ever doing anything. This challenge mode has really unearthed a few gems that maybe always got moved on early in the game for what were better players at that stage and I never got to see how well some of them developed.

@miguelfcp I 100% agree about weaker teams and have long held that view since making my own option files. Being as the (excellent) patches invariably have the same 'big' leagues in them the one's I've made myself I have concentrated on so called 'lesser' leagues and have had so much enjoyment playing with them. The stats do what they say on the tin in the retro games so well that the individuality of players comes out. That striker that you have to forego the shot on his left because you know it's going to be awful so you have to try to cut back onto your right or lay it off, The winger who is up against a full back that he can't beat so you have to look elsewhere to get at your opponent. The striker who's got pace to burn but couldn't hit a barn door, the defender who can win everything in the air but is awful on the deck and so on.

@mattmid, so true, what I and @fmicablues7 have been discussing at length, the earlier the PES game, the more every stat detail makes a big impact on the pitch.

That's why the default challenge is so addictive, because the players have mediocre statsheets overall but also "quirky" combinations, like Huylens having 87 shot acc. but being absolute rubbish in every other area, or Jaric's balanced statsheet except for his terrible aerial game. This forces you to play a realistic brand of football in which you play to your players' strengths, knowing that attempting to do anything they're not skilled enough to pull off will punish you rightaway. At this point of my gaming experience, I'm with @Madmac79: when using good/great teams, either I come up with a challenge to spice things up or I'll get bored quickly.

@Orhainmalz: Agreed with @Titch, such thing would be really useful particularly to compare players in each version.

yea, once I get a laptop again I might consider writing out a lot of word documents containing team info, mainly from pes1/pes2 where info is pretty scarce on the web now

btw if anyone is thinking of doing this because I pretty much can't start it out right now, don't use wikia, it lags pretty much anything somehow with its dumb ads

btw titch why blue logo?

Besides the player database which I believe would be really interesting to have, you just gave me an idea @Orhainmalz, was thinking of something along the lines of a World Cup magazine I'm currently reading: creating team guides stating their default formation/tactics and default starting eleven. Then we'd pick the best player of the squad and "write copy" about him, describing why he's the star player of the team. What do you guys think?

Me too @miguelfcp , I have not signed a top player in PES 2 or PES 3 in years. The salary cap I impose on myself of 800 pts works great as you can get excellent players for half the price of the big names. But I have allowed myself to sign a classic player re gen, Luigi Riva (PES Riga) for 788 salary pts. Just below my limit but what a player, shot power of 94.:SHOCK::SHOCK:

@miguelfcp , great idea. But given Castolo and Macco are the main men in my PES 3 ML at the moment, a biography book seems more apt.

Macco: The Man, The Muscles. :BOUNCE:

@WhoAteMeDinner

Some more suggested titles for the ML biographies

Castolo: "Where did it all go wrong"

Stein: "He's here, he's there, he's everyf* where."

Burchet: "Sixty Minute Hero"

Liberrman: "Heading for Stardom"

Minanda: "King of Kings"

Zamenhof: "My Best Holidays"

I would say Zamenhof would be a great holiday writer, all that time off. :SHAKE::SHAKE::SHAKE:

Could do an entire section just based on the ML default team. I actually remember it being a big deal when Castolo changed his haircut

@Orhainmalz Just fancied a change.
There are so many things we can look at. Might be a good idea to focus on one area and then gradually add things. I do see it as a wiki though which makes it easier for people to add things themselves.

@miguelfcp Not my Hamsun, he's a star! 50 goal legend already! Certainly surprised me!

@WhoAteMeDinner Do you think Big Sam will be putting last night's Soccer Aid win on his CV? :DD

@mattmid , maybe, but a Lombardia (Inter) WEFA Championship and Division 1 Cup double in the PES 3 ML could be on the cards too for my director of football.

We are looking damn near unstoppable up front now with Gigi Riva on the left added to Dario Silva, Ojigwe and Arellano the magician. :BSCARF::BSCARF::BSCARF:

PES NEWS ALERT:

The impossible just happened, old chicken drumstick thighs and wayward long range free kick "specialist" :FAIL:just scored a forty yarder rocket free kick against us and it even faded away at the very end, leaving the catlike Kelsen beaten.

That absurd long run up from halfway is so 1997. :SHAKE::SHAKE::SHAKE:

I don't remember seeing any of those go in any PES. The closest I came was either in PES1 or 2; Roberto Carlos hit it so hard the camera couldn't keep up. It hit the post off screen.

Sorry for having disappeared for a while from this thread (I'm guilty, I've been playing FIFA 18's World Cup mode before letting it finally go), this sounds like a great idea.
I still have to catch up with the reading, but imagine if this could also be done for the default ISS teams.

I remember buying players just so they couldn't play against me
Are you Silvio Berlusconi in disguise?
Because this is exactly what he used to do in the late '80s, when he was the chairman of AC Milan. We had a bench full of world class players that would've been starters anywhere else in the world... But who were just rotation players at AC Milan.

Yeah, that would be nice. And yeah, I see it as a wiki too, which is what I originally suggested so good on you ;)

Yeah I'd like to see some strategy guides on a team-by-team or even to an extent player-by-player basis, and you could indeed add a lot for ISS era.

If I do that collars look perfect but I’m trying make my own patch. So just copying over the uni folder within dat_e is just not enough. That must be another file needs to be copied over. I think it’s in PES3.exe somehow or over.dat. Hope someone will chime in to help :(
It's in the exe. Almost 100% sure about that. PES 4 on the other hand started using the param.dat file instead.

By the way, I think that the name of the tool for that was WEditor or something very similar. You could also export the data from an exe and import them to another if I recall correctly.

Aaaaand yes, I think that Kitserver could overwrite the collar settings stored in the exe. I just don't remember the WEndetta patch for PES 3 having a Kitserver at all, though.

That was some team. What was it, 56 matches unbeaten? Something like that.

Maldini, Baresi and Costacurta at the back in the same team. Crazy. Then Rijkaard, Gullit and Van Basten, Donadoni... the list goes on!

LOL. Here are some ones for ISS default players:

Pagani: "Thou shalt not pass"

Premoli: "Wasn't me, ref!"

Galfano: "Class on grass"

Allejo: "While you were reading this, I already scored twice"

Neither had I ever, only possible to score from forty yards in PES 3 I think. Ball physics are amazing in this edition. He never scored before, in all my games.:SHOCK::SHOCK:

How much do you all think knowing every little detail of all the default players abilities and strengths increases their performance on the pitch ? 30% or 40% perhaps ?

Castolo is my top scorer in the Division 1 league and in the WEFA Championship and I am reminded of how @miguelfcp and @mattmid have made Minanda play like the divine ponytail, which is a miracle with his stats. :TU::TU::TU:

PES 3 is the best football simulator! After playing it I was completely disappointed in the PES 5/WE9. I started doing the 1998/99 patch. So much work! I hope I have the patience to finish this. Nobody knows if there is a preview tool that allows you to view created kits? P.S. It is a pity that there is no possibility to use faces and stadiums from PES5/6. These teams will be in patch:
