The Retro-PES Corner

Playing some catch up in the thread.

The chipped through pass does very wildly through the ages but it is very flat in PES5/WE9. I’ve been playing WE9:LE lately and you need to have the right player in the right place at the right time to play an effective loft. The chipped through ball has never been better than it was in…

ISS Pro Evolution. Differences are subtle between it and the other, subsequent PS1 games but ISS PE changed everything. The flying saves, the free kicks, the through balls, the sliding tackles, the headers, the long shots, the volleys – all animated to perfection, all brilliant, all better than anything that went before and – in some cases, I’d argue – since. And all this wonder is showcased in this new, oddly-named but brilliant game mode.

I was an N64 owner until I played ISS PE and that was about mid-way through its life. So ISS PE2 was my first, full, counting-down-the-days Evo game. I’ve never played a game more. I played it before school, at lunchtime and after, until bed time. I bought an LCD screen for my PS One to play it in school. A beautiful marriage with Tijani Babangida as my best man.

Handballs – prevalent in PES3, less so in PES4, hens teeth in PES6 and nowhere else. Unless I’m mistaken.

You are welcome dude.Seems the handballit is debatable still. Whoever can contribute from Retro playing or good memory is welcome.

PS: Can anyone suggest a WE9LE patch from Sany's topic that has the original seasons rosters? After trying dozens of newer patches, i concluded that it feels more touching, to play the old games with their original players.

I've been on to this quite recently, actually. The 'plain' game listed in the thread isn't plain at all. There are squad changes and player edits.

But not in this: https://www.evo-web.co.uk/threads/winning-eleven-online-the-patch.78963/#post-3286645

Default squads but correct player names. Kits are from 2010-11 I think.

Just don't try to change the PES United kit, eh @miguelfcp...

The way the English media have hyped up and fawned over Phil Neville. If the USA thump England tonight, Gary's little brother will be thrown into the Tower of London.....

Matchday #12 - Poland vs. Norway

PS: The WYC2019 apologizes for the lack of sound on the first few minutes of the broadcast, as our sound technician was distracted by some of the polish fans in the stadium.

What to do when your star player doesn't show up?

What can you do if you're Norway, a utterly forgettable side, whose squad exists first and foremost to serve he who is definitely one of the best players of the competition, and arguably a future footballing superstat...but the guy decides not to do anything out there?

Red Bull Salzburg's Haland is probably the best striker in this World Youth Cup, so naturally all eyes were on him this afternoon. And just like Italy's Pietro Pellegri and Moise Kean, all MVP candidates in theory, Haland himself ended up being absolutely anonymous during the full 90 minutes. It's not as if Norway as a team played brilliantly, far from it actually as the team always had issues when going forward and putting together decent attacking plays, however on the few occasions where Haland was able to have enough space and time on the ball to pull off something, he just couldn't do anything.

As for Poland, again they didn't reinvent the wheel with their offense, yet they did look like the most mature team out there, particularly when it came to controlling the tempo of the match. While they don't have a superstar like Haland, Poland relied mostly on their solidity at the back - the centreback duo was superb - and had enough heart and intelligence to keep pushing (albeit quietly) for a goal.

With no team being particularly inspired, the match was more of a chess-like encounter with few opportunities to explore any of the opponent's defensive fragilities. As such, Poland came out on top by being by far the most intelligent and solid team. The final result is realistic but I wouldn't have been surprised if this equation had only been solved through on the PK shootout, as neither team was quite able to exert dominance over the other. It's all about efficiency and Poland understood that well.

Man of the Match: Zjawinski. He singlehandedly carried Poland to the round of 16. I know Poland's overall balanced organization was key to hold off Norway, yet Zjawinski was the light on Poland's offense at all times, including when he decided to score a brilliant header to eliminate Norway from the WYC. Zjawinski was the Haland that never was.

Up: Tagseth. If there were two Tagseths playing for Norway, they wouldn't have lost this one. He looked like the only inspired player on his team, not only securing the defensive midfield when on defense but also he was always lucid when deciding what to do with the ball - sadly, no other teammate of his was.

Up: Peda and Walukiewicz. Poland's centreback duo had one of the toughest tasks a team participating in the World Youth Cup has had so far: marking Haland. They absolutely nailed it. The threat of Haland was totally neutralized during the whole match; and few other players were able to get these two off balance.

Down: Haland. What is happening to the striker superstars of this WYC? Like Kean and Pellegri, Haland just wasn't himself. His first half was shockingly horrible; and even if he did try to improve his disastrous first half performance later on, it was not at all enough for a player of his caliber. He was expected to be one of the top scorers of this tournament, if not the best...

Mad busy summer for an odd year "off season" of football:

UEFA Nations League
U-21 UEFA European Championships
Copa America
Africa Cup of Nations
Women's World Cup

And that old and impossible to kill "billionaire global elite dream" of a European Super League has been dug up again.

@slamsoze , do PES games of recent years still have kit like headbands and ankle strappings for outfield players in the player edit menu or are they gone too ?
No headbands. Only the very skinny headband for the longhair hairstyles. Ankle tapes are there but limited to some type of boots and the color is locked to socks base collie. Same for wristbands, you can only edit them to white/beige/black/and kit color and both can only have the same color, not separate editing.
At general, whatever feature survives elimination from the editor, is either very limited or hard-locked . Not even near the freedom of old PES games. ImAgine that the hairstyles have only around 10 basic variations and the special hairstyles are around 20. From which only 3-5 are useable to resemble a normal human being hairstyle and not a Chrono Trigger character.

@slamsoze , your slamsozeness highly informative as always mate.

Only skinny headbands and just thirty total hairdos to choose from. His Royal Beckhamness would never leave the dressing room with such limited choices.

And to think PES 3 had hundreds of options for headbands, hair, ankle straps, boots, protective goggles too I think.

The Dinner's keen sense for corporate interference suspects the likes of UEFA, Addidas and the licensed clubs in later PES games insisted that Konami restrict the player edit options to make their merchandise in-game more visible.

Yeah i miss the freedom the edit mode brought as a kid. Being able to give anybody Edgar David's goggles or those protective face masks players would wear when they break their noses. I understand it though, The lack of customization is a by product of the sophistication of the player models now. Back on the PS2, the players faces were scaled so every hairstyle and accessory would fit them. So proportionately, The faces or "heads" rather weren't accurate but artistically, The players were still recognizable. A fair compromise for the tech.

Nowadays we're in a gaming culture of unmistakable realism, or at least a demand for it. The players are now scanned into the game, literally a virtual reality clone of their physical space, immortalized in game. It's cool but it sure has a shade of some Black Mirror depravity doesn't it?

Those who aren't contractually obliged to be scanned in the game are painstakingly sculpted by 3D modelers and they sure are talented artists too i might add, But the downside is because now the standard is making their proportions as lifelike and as accurate as possible, they'd have to account for the accessories like glasses, headbands, masks and even custom hair styles fitting each head model without glitching or looking buggy. And for something that's quite trivial and that they estimate not a lot of users will bother with, They just deem it worthy so they remove the option altogether unfortunately.

Greece v England

Greece (4-5-1)

GK Christogeorgos
CB Gotzamanidis
CB Boskouidis
RB Lyratzis
LB Galoupis
DM Alexandropoulos
CM Athanasakopoulos
CM Vraka
SM Emmanouilidis
SM Marinos
CF Serpezis

England (4-3-3)

GK Okonkwo
CB Panzo
CB Medley
RB Eyoma
LB L.Gibson
DM Oakley-Boothe
AM Smith-Rowe
AM Foden
RW Sancho
LW Hudson-Odoi
CF Griffiths

If double barrelled surnames counted for anything England would already be assured of winning the World Youth Cup.

England made a really good start to the game and Griffiths might have scored had he shown more composure. Greece settled down a bit after that and began to pose a problem or two. After that early flurry of chances the Greek defence got on top of the England attack and were giving up very little. A few fouls led to three yellow cards as frustration got the better of one or two. Foden and Oakley-Boothe going into the book along with Galoupis of Greece. Greece had a good shot for a penalty but didn't get it. Then on 42 minutes a free kick out by the left touchline for Greece led to the firsit goal. Oakley-Boothe completely switching of as Papdopolous who ironically had just come on for the injure Serpezis (fouled even more ironically by Oakley-Boothe!) nipped in front of him to poke the ball home into the roof of the net! A hard side to break down at any time England had now made their life doubly difficult.

Half Time and Greece had 6 shots to England's 3.

The second half started with England on top but unable to really get into the Greek box to cause any problems whilst Greece had one attack that led to a header over the top by Papadopolous. The England manager had seen enough, hauling off the ineffective Sancho for Brewster on 56 minutes. Almost immediately England were level. Hudson-Odoi clipped a nice ball over the top to Griffiths, who played a lovely 1-2 with the post before prodding home the rebound! A minute later and things got worse for Greece. Griffiths played in Brewster down near the corner of the box. Galoupis, caught out of position, rushed back and slid in recklessly, bringing the Englishman down. He knew right away what he'd done and could only hold his head in his hands as the referee ran over waving a yellow card swiftly followed by a red.

The timing could not have been worse with England having just got themselves back in the game. England began to build pressure on the Greek defence. On 64 minutes Greenwood came on for Hudson-Odoiwho had been quiet apart from his assist. Brewster switched to the left. Within seconds Brewster got the ball on the half way line. He turned and saw Griffiths making a run. He flighted a lovely ball over the top and Griffiths was in! Could he finish? In a word, yes! Emphatically smashing it past the keeper. 2-1 England. On 68 minutes Smith-Rowe got Greenwood away down the right, he beat his man and whipped in a cross. It was headed out but although going to Alexandropolous his touch was heavy. Smith-Rowe nipped in on the loose ball and fed it into Griffiths near the penalty spot. He turned and buried it! 3-1! A 12 minute hat-trick for Griffiths!! In the space of 12 minutes England had gone from a goal down to a man advantage and a 2 goal lead.

Greece had clearly lost heart now and soon England were in again. Greenwood getting clear down the right from Griffith's ball. He tried to square it back to him but it got blocked but only as far as Brewster who hit it first time but could only guide it just past the post.

72 mins Smith-Rowe won the ball again in the centre circle played it in to Griffiths who spotted Brewster's run as he turned and clipped the ball over the Greek defence. Brewster was clear and bearing down on the area. He took it early and placed it nicely into the right hand side of the goal. 4-1!

77 mins a poor clearance played it straight into Brewster's path and he was away down the left hand edge of the penalty area. He pulled it back towards Greenwood but he got a poor connection on it and shot straight at the keeper.

As the clock ticked down Foden had a free kick for England a fair way out. He struck it well but it was routine for the keeper. With time just about up Greece suddenly got in as Ntoumanis hit a ball over the England defence for Papadopolous. He raced after it whilst Okonkwo tarted to come out as well. Papadopolous just got their first but Okonkwo stayed big to block the shot

Full Time

Greece 1 England 4

The sending off was the key moment without a doubt, although England had just levelled things up. They really made the extra man count in a 15 minutes spell, scoring four good goals including the tournamenent's first hat-trick as Griffiths goes into the lead for the Golden Boot in the space of 12 minutes. Eclipsing even Ruiz's 2 for Spain in a 5 minute spell. The Greeks had done very well in the first half, having the most of the chances and taking the lead as well as having a very good shout for a penalty. Had that been given and they'd gone in with a 2-0 lead then who knows what might have happened.

M.o.M Has to be Griffith's for his clinical finishes and chipping in with an assist as well. We've seen a lot of strikers fluff their lines so far but not today.

Worthy Mentions: Brewster did exceptionally well when coming on for the last half hour or so grabbing a goal and an assist. Smith-Rowe played well throughout and got an assist as well as having a hand in another as well.

Disappointments: Sancho had a poor game and Hudson-Odoi was quiet as well although he set up the first goal. With Griffiths, Brewster and Greenwood linking up well, albeit against ten men, the manager might have some selection headaches for the next round.

@mattmid:
Amazing, just amazing Matt. Where to begin? First, Papadopoulos the ultimate super-sub gets a goal right after he's subbed in. Greece finishes the first half dominating England, who looked more interested in getting yellow cards than playing actual football. Then, the manager decides to sub off one of the most dangerous players in this competition (Sancho) and the team lightens up...preparing itself for the Griffiths show. :WORSHIP:

Thanks for that slamsoze, I was not at all aware of the state of the edit mode in modern-PES. I actually thought it was much better than the retro ones, as it'd only be natural if that was the case. In a game like PES6 you're able to use, what, 400 hairstyles - not counting the generic ones?
