The PC Building Thread

I am not sure about budget but if you looking around the £100 mark and asking about 2nd hand cards the best card to buy could be the 680GTX.

Looking at completed listings on eBay the card sells for around £120.

On benchmarks the card is on average 102% faster.

I might just get a GTX 660 for £40-50

I'm not really planning on playing new AAA games on it atm i can't even run outlast properly

If you not planning on playing games on the system, then you can just pretty much get any card or even if you have a newish PC just use the onboard graphics on the CPU.

I got a half decent one in the end for £50 just incase i want to try games out in the future.

I have a question about the fans in a system. My case has 3 fans one at the front (low) one at the side (low) and one at the back (3/4 up),
should i have the side and rear as exhausts and the front an intake?

Also from what i remember i have a 7v adaptors for them should i just let them all run at 12v?

Cheers guys :)

After your and other forums feedback I changed my mind about the Titan and the H100i GTX and now it's like that :D

Any thoughts? :D

Don't really have any recommendations to make to be honest.

I am glad you made the decision to go against the H100, the Noctua cooler sounds incredibly quiet. I massively regret my H110 although it is very very cool the noise really pisses me off.

The best motherboard as well are meant to be the
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII..
or for the price range of the ASUS Z170 Gaming is meant to be:
Gigabyte Z170 GA-Z170X-UD5..

Personally I don't like Gigabyte boards had a few in the past and have always given up on me.. Never had an ASUS break.

Other things I would consider possibly doing is adding an additional SSD, this will give you a 250GB boot drive for Windows and Apps and an additional 500GB for Games..
Once you have the OS some apps and then Games, you will find 500GB might not go as far as you think.

Apart from that I do find some of the pricing very bizarre, I don't think a company building PC's should be charging for Thermal Paste (and the paste being used should define a company and their build quality), especially given that it costs £4.50 and a tube should be able to do around 5 machines.

Thanks for your thoughts :)

I'm not really a mainboard expert and the one I have choosen looked good to me, so that's why. The Asus Rog Maximus you mentioned is also available at pcspecialist, I will have a look but I trust you and will change it like that.

About the SSD I had the same thoughts lately, I have to admit. Normally I didn't plan to install games on the SSD, only Windows and programs like video editors and Photoshop. Games to the HDD but if I make my mind again games like FIFA 16 could heavily improve on the SSD, especially with the mods I'm using. I will consider a second SSD, thanks.

Well, finally about the thermal paste :D it's also possible to stay on the default thermal paste without any costs, I didn't even look at it when I configured the Rig.

All in all, I know that I can achieve a heavy price drop if I would build it myself or also if if I order it somewhere in Germany. The problem is I had some bad situations with German PC companies in the past, so I don't trust them anymore and furthermore I rather let it build by an expert with higher costs than building on my own with faults. Pcspecialist.co.uk is a very trustworthy company from the UK and it delivers to Germany.

I would purchase a 2nd SSD 500GB isn't alot after you actually think these days that 100GB is easily taken up by just 2/3 games now.

I would never put just normal Thermal Paste on a gaming PC - the temperature difference is the same between having a decent cooler and an average cooler, when I build PC's these days I always use this stuff:-
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gelid-Solut...d=1454684650&sr=1-1&keywords=gelid+gc+extreme

I was just suprised to see that they are charging 12E for it when it costs less than that for a tube and a tube can do 4-6 PC's.

I wouldn't be too worried about building PC's they are very simple to do everything only fits in one hole.

I have taught numerous people to build computers and it only takes being shown once to know what your doing.

In my experience the only difference between a very professional build and a poor build is cable management. If PC specialist built your machine the chances are the cables could be well managed, compared to you doing it.. But even then doing it yourself you will possibly be really anal about it and do an exceptional job.

Fair enough can never hurt having a semi decent gaming card.

In regards to your question about fans the back needs to exhaust.. As for the side one it depends - there is much debate whether it should be intake or exhaust. Most forums say to try both and monitor system temperatures, but when i used to have one on the side it was exhuast.

when it comes to motherboards, make a list of what features you need on the board (eg. wireless, extra sata ports, multiple m.2 ports, higher quality onboard sound, amount of expansion ports) then buy the board that has what you need, don't buy a board based on name or price.

Asus maximus is a good board, but have a lot of features on it that you may never use for example, so you maybe able to save a few quid by getting a different board, and spending it somewhere else on your build

The 5930k wasn't a great example, it is rather expensive, a 5830k maybe a better buy for a gamer/video editor. currently is not much more expensive than a 6700k and will out perform it by a fair bit once overclocked.

So, after the feedback I added a second SSD and changed to the Asus ROG Maximus Mainboard.
If there aren't any serious complaints, I will finally order it this weekend :)

Cheers mate i'm all set up now :)

All i need now is some games to test out.

Can anyone recommend me any good games and cheap places to get them from. I'm way way out of touch with PC gaming :)

There's a Steam sale on right now. Great timing to be looking for games!

I recently bought a Graphics card, PSU, Memory and some fans for £130

3 years ago i made a Media Centre PC for £260 (CPU, Motherboard, Memory, HDD and case), so just added them parts above. The parts i had 3 years ago will be half the price now probably as well.

So to build one the same as mine £300-350.

I have an MSI GTX 770 4gb, I hadn't realised that the gains with SLI were so significant, I was just reading that if I SLI it the performance will beat the Titan on some games which has me quite interested.

Do you have to match your first card perfectly to be SLI compatible? Struggling to find anywhere selling another "MSI GTX 770 4gb".

So then, I ended up buying a 2nd hand "MSI GTX 770 4gb" on Ebay for £155 will need to buy a new PSU, apparently I need at least an 850W? Prefer to buy in Sweden so I can deduct the VAT thoughts on these two:

http://cdon.se/hemelektronik/corsair-rm850-850w-p25475197

Corsair RM850 850W

http://cdon.se/hemelektronik/evga-supernova-g2-850w-atx-80-gold-p27361105

EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850W, ATX, 80+ Gold

If there's better for a similar price there's plenty of other Swedish stores I can buy from :)

Do you really need an 850W PSU to run 2x 770 GTX? Recommended PSU online says you only need a 645W for the following:-
Standard Motherboard
Intel i7
4 x RAM sticks DDR3
2 x SSD
1x HD
Bluray Drive
5 USB Devices

SLI is very good when the games support, in supported games a 770 in SLI is on par and sometimes is better than a 980.

Hmm well I thought I did (based on a review I read for these cards that are rated at 250w each I believe).

Edit: Just tried this site: http://powersupplycalculator.net/ and it says I'd need a 763W PSU and this site http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator says 780W

Guess that's AMD for ya ;)

No you don't you just need a generic one.
You normally get them free with Motherboards and GFX Cards.

I know I have several of them in my box of cables and PC stuff.

Aha thanks I'll just buy a cheap one then if I can't find one.

I checked my Mobo box, ironically it's an "MSI 970A SLI Krait Edition Socket" and doesn't come with an SLI bridge, fuckers! And not sure if my MSI N770 came with one but I'll dig out the box! I watched an unboxing video on Youtube and it didn't show one.
