24-09 20:00 Beveren - Charleroi 1 - 1
24-09 20:00 Club Brugge - Lokeren 0 - 1
24-09 20:00 Racing Genk - Cercle Brugge 3 - 1
24-09 20:00 Moeskroen - La Louviere 2 - 1
24-09 20:00 FC Brussels - Zulte-Waregem 1 - 1
25-09 15:00 Roeselare - AA Gent 1 - 1
25-09 18:00 G. Beerschot - Standard 2 - 2
25-09 20:00 Lierse - Anderlecht 0 - 0

Current Champions Club Brugge are in crisis they've lost their second consecutive match against Lokeren (0-1). This was their first defeat at home in 2,5 years. Lokeren are a good team but they should never win in Brugge.
Anderlecht also lost points against Lierse. Both Belgian CL clubs aren't exacly in good form, so i'm rather pessimistic about their matches against Bayern Munchen and Betis Sevilla (but then we Belgians are always pessimistic...maybe they can both win).
Standard were quite lucky this weekend. They had to play in Antwerp against lowly ranked GBA. After 15' Onyewu was sent off for a revenge on a GBA player. Onyewu claimed he never hit the player on purpose, could be true but is hardly believable when you look at the replays (i saw the match live on television). Nevertheless Standard managed to take the lead by a Conceicao goal.. In the last minutes of the first half GBA scored 2 goals (the second was a real beauty). After barely 30 seconds in the second half Standard equalized in an unbelievable way. A free kick by Conceicao was saved by the GK but he could not hold the ball...Tchité took the rebound which ricocheted against the GK and a GBA defender and went in goal...After that both teams could have scored the winner but it ended in a 2-2 draw...With that result, Standard is still first.
Brussels played against newly promoted Zulte Waregem at home and conceded a 1-1 draw. IMHO a 1-1 draw at hom is not enough if you want to have a quiet season...
Once again Westerlo were this weekend's winners.

Well, what can i say...another bad week for Belgium teams in Europe.
Brugge were not exactly outclassed by an unimpressive Bayern Munchen, but still they lost after an error of goal keeper Butina, an error of the ref (clear hands ball by Ismaël) and a defensive error (De Michelis could score between 4 Brugge defenders). Typically Belgian is that Brugge was happy to lose with "only" 1-0.
Anderlecht were totally outclassed (in the first half at least) by a much quicker and beter Betis Sevilla. Proto played outstanding otherwise it could have 0-5 by half time. The gap between Belgian football and Spanish (lowly ranked!!!) teams is huge. But still i'm convinced that a good Anderlecht can win points against both English teams...BUT Anderlecht is bad even in the Jupiler League (just like Brugge).
GBA went out in the UEFA CUP against Marseille in the penalties, which is quite honourable. But Genk lost 0-1 against an unfancied Bulgarian team....that is a bad result.
More news about the Jupiler League this evening...

The results of the 9th round:

Speeldag 9 (30/09/2005 - 03/10/2005)
30-09 20:30 Charleroi - Club Brugge 3 - 3
01-10 18:00 Zulte-Waregem - Roeselare 2 - 1
01-10 20:00 Westerlo - Beveren 4 - 1
01-10 20:00 Anderlecht - Sint-Truiden 3 - 0

02-10 15:00 Cercle Brugge - Moeskroen 1 - 0
02-10 18:00 G. Beerschot - Racing Genk 2 - 2

Standard still leader after a 2-1 against Lokeren in what seemed an impressive performance against a pretty strong team.
Anderlecht has won 3-0 against Sint-Truiden but it was more difficult than the result would indicate. Anderlecht is still far from impressive.
Brugge played a very spectacular match in Charleroi: 3-3 against a team with a very good goal keeper and who is the most catenaccio-style team in the Jupiler League. Portillo finally scored his first goal. Still 1 point in 3 matches is not enough for Brugge.
Westerlo and newcomer Zulte-Waregem keep ond winning and they are respectively third and fourth. If you know that Zulte-Waregem isn't even a professional club with players who all have day job and train in the evening their current run is very remarkable.
And then finally good news again from FC Brussels: a 0-3 win in La Louvière which gives them a litle bit of breathing space.

Hello mate,

Did bet Anderlecht on my coupon, and was sweating for a bit (although it still got beat anyway).

However, thinking of betting Spain against Belgium (sorry mate  ). How do you judge Belgium's chances against Spain? I'm looking at it as I think Spain have to win it or they will not qualify (that's what I heard).

FD

Hi FD,

I'm afraid Spain is a safe bet...if Belgium wins with a three goal difference they still have a chance to become second in the group...but the difference between both teams is big in theory..although Spain are underachievers...
Belgium plays without the injured Kompany but with Mbo and Emile Mpenza upfront and together they are something special...you never know but if i were you i would put my money on Spain...

Yep, sorry mate, I had to bet them.

If my coupon is already beat (I got Scotland on it  ) then I hope you pull off a result, but I can't see it. Just can't think of Spain not being at the WC. That's why I bet France too.

FD

Well Prof, i'm quite satisfied with the match...the Belgium team played a very good match.
Aragones mad a wonderfull substitution. Our right back Vanden Borre started as a right winger, played a superb first half but of course became tired. Aragones substituted Vicente and brought Reyes in. Antheunis did not react. Reyes' first ball touch was a wonderfull pass for Fernando Torres: 0-1 (beautifull goal). Three minutes later: same story assist Reyes, goal Fernando Torres. Over and out.
I saw a good match, the best in Belgium's qualification round...but you have to say Spain are better...and nobody outside Belgium will miss us.
I will enjoy the WC without them too...will be more relaxed.

As far as i'm concerned: no...
I like the teams from outside Europe and South America...
And lets face it , it isn't that strange that a litle country like Belgium can't qualify for a WC...

I would also like to see more African teams in the WC.
Maybe Fifa should expand to European "play-offs" (between the teams who are second in their group) to the rest of the world too...

Results of the 10th match day:

Speeldag 10 (14/10/2005 - 17/10/2005)
15-10 18:00 Moeskroen - G. Beerschot 4 - 1
15-10 20:00 Lierse - Zulte-Waregem 0 - 2
15-10 20:00 Beveren - Anderlecht 0 - 1

15-10 20:00 Roeselare - La Louviere 4 - 1
16-10 18:00 Sint-Truiden - AA Gent 1 - 1
16-10 20:00 Racing Genk - Standard 0 - 1

Standard won a difficult away match in Genk by 0-1 and remains on top. Things were complicated by (another) red card after 20 minutes for Onyewu...once again he took revenge on another player...shame for such a talented player. Despite having to play 70 minutes with 10 against eleven Standard still won the match.
Anderlecht won 0-1 against "Ivory Coast" (Beveren). Like almost every week Beveren was the better team but could not score (again like almost every week). Beveren are definitely the most attractive team in the Jupiler League, but since matches are won by scoring goals...
Club Brugge won 1-2 afgainst Westerlo, but here the match was won by the ref. Westerlo were leading 1-0 when Balaban was baltantly diving. The ref awarded a penalty and did sent Westerlo GK Gaspercic off. Balaban scored in the subsequent penalty. In the second half the same ref refused a perfectly valid penalty for Westerlo and to complete all, Westerlo's substitute GK made a howler and Club Brugge won ther match that Westerlo should have won...this was a bad thing for football...
Once again both CL teams were playing very bad...i think Liverpool and Rapid Vienna will have a field day against them...
Bad weekend for Brussels aswell, they lost 1-2 against Cercle Brugge. They should beat teams like that...14th position...it will be a long and hard season.
Next week is the clash between Brugge and Anderlecht...

Ok FD let's give it a try...

Anderlecht should normally win against Brugge.
Cercle Brugge should win against Roeselare, but a draw is possible too.
La Louvière-Lierse is a difficult one. La Louvière are last but Lierse have difficulties scoring goals, so maybe a draw...
GBA-Brussels: you know i'm biased here...Brussels certainly has to win this one, otherwise things ar egetting difficult... so i would say: away but a draw would be a safer bet.
Genk- Mouscron: a win for Genk
Zulte Waregem - Sint-Truiden: a win for the home team (Zulte Waregem)
AA Gent - Beveren: Beveren the better team, AA Gent the team who will score (so either an home win or a draw).
Westerlo-Lokeren: two very good teams, i have a gut feeling that Lokeren will win although Westerlo is extremely good this season (and i like them).
Standard- Charleroi: the leaders against the most defensive team. Standard is a safe bet, they could benefit from a draw in Anderlecht-Brugge. But this is a derby who had has some funny results...a tough one but let's say that Standard will win...(they are very good this season)...

I'm not good at this...but good luck.

Thanks mate, I want to really only choose 1 team. So if you had £1000 (I don't, so don't worry  ) and you had to pick a team to win, what 1 would it be. Any you would say is a safe bet?

Cheers.

Just watched the Anderlecht- Brugge game (2-2). Well this proves that even "leeser leagues" can produce very good matches. Two gaols from Serhay Akin (good player) gave Anderlecht two times the lead, but Brugge equalised two times by Sven Vermant and Gert Verheyen. Christian Wilhelmsson played a fantastic match, this guy will not stay in Belgium, he's great...Overall IMHO Brugge were the better team but htey have a lousy egoistic FW in Bosko Balaban, if i was coach of Brugge i would put him on the bench (were players like Portillo, Blondel and Valgaren sit week in week out).
This match day was good for Standard, who now have a gap of 3 points with Anderlecht and 9 with Brugge. Standard wobn the derby against a very good Charleroi. This match saw one of the biggest fightings in Belgian football, 14 or 15 players were throwing punches around and all this resulted in...two yellow cards...
Brussels won against GBA which is good for them...
And then onemore thing...FD, i hope you did not play Zulte-Waregem-Sint Truiden (1-5, i predicted a certain win for the sie that lost...sorry).
Oh and the Jupiler League is discovering a fantastic "new" forward: hakim Bouchouari of Lokeren...it's his first season in the first division after years in lower leagues...he is 27 years old...and 10 years ago i saw him play for the team of my village, i thougth ge was a great player...this year he was finally discovered. Yesterday he scored a great goal against Westerlo.

Leaders Standard lost against Mouscron, proving that Conçeicao is irreplacable for this team (he was out due to a 3thd yellow card). Both goals were defensive errors by Onyewu (hte first one was a placement error and the second just sloppy play). Although a big talent, Onyewu has become something of a liability to Standerd: two red cards in 3 matches and now the match looser for them...
Meanwhile Anderlecht played 2-2 against Lokeren (a very good team), which leaves Brugge the winners of the week. And to be hones i think that right now Brugge is the best team in Belgium. Anderlecht has problems and Standard is too dependable of Conçeicao...
That said, Anderlecht is a team facing problems after mid-season transfer period or next season. It's almost certain that the following players will leave the team: Kompany - Vandenborre - Wilhelmsson - Jestrovic and Tihinen. If you know that Serhat Akin migth also leave and that Zetterberg will quit playing football and furthermore that Vanderhaegen and Goor are old players (36 and 32 yars old), that only leaves, Proto De Schacht, Goor and Mbo Mpenza from the current first team.
I think Anderlecht will loose oce again in the CL in Liverpool. Brugge however can certainly win against Rapid Vienna. With a win against the Austrian team they still could qualify for the next round in the CL and would be certain of UEFA Cup qualification...
Meanwhile Brussels had a surprise win against Racing Genk. 1-0: another goal from forward De Camargo...his 7th in 9 matches he played...a player who certainly will not stay in Brussels.

Is Vandenborre really good? I just really know him because of a couple of games i.e. WE/PES and Football Manager. He's only like 17 or 18 in the game.

FD

I think he can become very good...just like Kompany i think it would be better if they played him in midfield (Kompany DMF, Vandenborre R SMF).
Vandenborre is very good attacking, he has unbelievable stamina, but is defensive positioning isn't that good...
Both Kompany and Vandenborre are targeted by very big clubs like Chelsea and Inter (well they think they are big)...i'm not sure if it would be a good thing for the both of them to join those clubs...i think they would be perfect for clubs like Lyon, Marseille, Charlton, Middelesborough...or Celtic...
It is not very good for young players like the both of them to sit on a bench in a big club or even worse (because they both make regular errors) or to loose constantly in the CL (Anderlecht).

06-11 13:00 Zulte-Waregem - Club Brugge 2 - 1
06-11 18:00 Standard - Westerlo 1 - 0

Club Brugge are the losers of this day. The lost against newly promoted Zulte-Waregem (the Belgian Wigan).
Anderlecht had a good victory against catenaccio team Charleroi: 3-1. Vandenborre was played in midfield and scored the first goal after a fantastic through ball by Wilhelmsson (surely he will leave Belgium in january...). Afterwards Vandenborre injured himself (again) and he seems to be out for a couple of months.
Standard are still leaders after a difficult win against Westerlo, the team with thebest defensive record in the Jupiler League. The goal was a beauty. It all started with a Westerlo counter attack, a FW came alone before Runje. Runje saved and kicked the ball imediately upfront, it bounced before the feet of Almani Moreira who took on the volley: 1-0 and game over. This is good for the championship...
Meanwhile Brussels came away with a point from Mouscron. Until a couple of weeks ago Mouscron seemed relegation fodder, but suddenly they began to play very good ans started winning matches. Last week they even beat leaders Standard...Brussels took the lead early on in the match but Mouscron equalised just before half-time. in first time injury time a Brussels shot was saved with a hands but the ref did not notice it...(which happens, i beleive that in the end all these decisions evens themselves out, so it's no use moaning about it). Mouscron was the better team in the second half but right at the end Brussels forward Niçoise (former Metz player???) received a beautifull assist from Espartero (ex-Metz) and missed the unmissable...a defeat would have been harsh for Mouscron.
Next week will be interesting with the leaders Standard and second Anderlecht facing though away games. Standard play against Brussels who won at home against Brugge and drewagainst Anderlecht. Anderlecht face Westerlo which is their horror adversary. Westerlo have beaten Anderlecht 6-2, 4-0 and 5-0 in recent seasons...

Just like i predicted the 14th match day was a cracker.

First of all, the best news (for me): BRUSSELS HAVE BEATEN LEADERS STANDARD WITH 3-1. And this after being lead by 0-1. The inevitable De Camargo scored his eight goal of the season and teams like Club Brugge, Standard and Vitesse have shown interest in him (maybe next year he will be in PES/WE!!!!). With this win Brussels is currently 8th which is a big success. Their other forward Niçoise, which is a new signing, is starting to play good aswell...well he better be because they can't afford to be too dependent on De Camargo who will likely leave the club in the mid-season transfer window.
The other big match was Westerlo-Anderlecht. Traditionally Anderlecht lost that match, albeit "only" with 2-1...In a not so distant past Westerlo beat Anderlecht 6-0 and 5-0...Anyway, Anderlecht was bad...the goal they scored was a penalty after Wilhelmsson once again was diving...
Season revelation Zulte-Waregem beat Lokeren who were 3th. Zulte-Waregem did this with beautifull simple football. With superb passing and players who move "between the lines"...They are playing attractive football and Lokeren is (in Belgium) a very strong team....
Club Brugge has beaten La Louvière with 4-0. Finally Portillo played a good match.

All the results of this match day:

19-11 18:00 Charleroi - AA Gent 2 - 0
19-11 20:00 Sint-Truiden - G. Beerschot 1 - 2
19-11 20:00 Beveren - Cercle Brugge 5 - 1
19-11 20:00 Club Brugge - La Louviere 4 - 0
19-11 20:00 Lokeren - Zulte-Waregem 2 - 3
19-11 20:00 FC Brussels - Standard 3 - 1
20-11 15:00 Roeselare - Moeskroen 5 - 0
20-11 18:00 Westerlo - Anderlecht 2 - 1
20-11 20:00 Lierse - Racing Genk 1 - 2

The ranking after 14 matches:

Next week Standard plays Anderlecht at home.

Furthermore there are allegations of a match fixing scandal in Belgian football (something Belgian football really needs at this moment). Sint-Truiden and Lierse would be involved in strange betting patterns on Betfair (what's in a name). A Belgian ex-players would also ivolved (allegedly) in match fixing of the match Metz-Lyon (0-4).

Well Belgium is the only banana-republic with a king and without bananas...

Hmm... not sure if I like the sound of Lyon being mentioned followed by a bunch of mediocre teams when they really are even bigger and more talented in some areas than likes of Inter Milan! but anyways.. I would like to see Anthony van den Borre move to Lyon and be a backup for Revelleire for first little while. Perhaps as he gets better, they can fight off for the RB slot but like any other top team, you need good depth and Diatta who Lyon often play as RB if Reveillere can't make it is VERY Def-minded. In fact it's like playing a CB which is what he really is at RB slot.

For that reason I like to see Lyon get another player who won't make their approach all defensive if Revelleire is absent!

Also we'll get to see the 2 Anthony's battle for the RB position which is great!

@STan, is Silvio Proto doing better now? and how is Charleroi getting on? I haven't followed this thread or Belgian football at all lately since 4th or 5th week of season!

Well maybe Lyon is too good for Vandenborre (had a dreadfull match against Chelsea yesterday)...Those young talented players have to play as much as possible...

Proto is doing very good currently. In fact he's the only decent Anderlecht player the last weeks...Manager Vercauteren has finally understood that it is not ideal to rotate Gk's, so Proto plays every week. IMHO Proto is the only Belgian player who has a big future before him. I'm afraid that Kompany and Vandenborre will make wrong choices and end up on the bench of clubs like Inter Milan.

Proto has a big future before him but he's not the best GK in the Jupiler League. That is by far Bertrand Lacquait, the French goalkeeper of Charleroi. When Charleroi discoverd him he was without a job after a serious injury. He played football in a public parc in Nancy. This is a GK who could play in any big club. Charleroi are currently eleventh which is not good for them. After "the big four Anderelcht, Brugge, Genk and Standard" come teams like Westerlo, Lokeren and Charleroi...They are a verty defensive and disciplined team. They have two really good players: the aboive mentioned LacQuait who is exceptionally good and AMF Christ (also a French player). Christ is good aswell but not exceptional like Lacquait.

Right Gerd, come on, give me the stick on winner for the Belgian weekend. \\:o/

Never got to see any of the Chelsea match, but Anderlecht must be really poor, 5 defeats and 0 goals.

FD

Anderlecht are a disgrace FD. They will sell lots of players and must hope to build a new team in a very short period.

Is it still possible to bet on Belgian matches??? You know there is currently a match fixing scandal. It seems that abnormally much people placed a bet on matches with teams like Sint-Truiden, Lierse, La Louvière.
The problem arose on betfair.

A quick update on the aborted 15th match day. Due to a litle bit of snow most matches were not played except for:

Cercle Brugge - Club Brugge 0-1 (goal by Balaban after a blatant off-side and an hands ball)

Racing Genk - Sint-Truiden 2-0
