Real Madrid Thread

how can a player like Benzema get so many minutes at Real Madrid ? I bet Real will go for some quality striker in January , I'm guessing Falcao will be the one or Suarez (all tho I'm not sure if he's player that Real need)

Just hope they keep their grubby mitts away from Kun!

They need defensive players anyway. They're like us in a way, can be scarily good going forward but dodgy at the back. No team can score 3+ goals a game.

If Real Madrid's guys had half a brain they would've offloaded this French chance waster and kept the real striker (Higuain). Chances are that they would've been equal or close to Barcelona at this point if they had.

Benzema is a talented player, he got skillz out of the wazoo and all but he just isn't a goal getter and that's what Real Madrid needs.

I don't think Real needs a goalscorer at all, they just need someone the likes of Ronaldo, Bale, Di Maria, Isco etc can play off and Benzema does that better than Higuain.

what RM needs is someone to keep them safe at the back so that all those attacking players (Ronaldo, Benzema, Isco, Bale, Modrić, Di Maria) can have a bit more freedom when going forward and not looking over their shoulder if they left their space uncovered. It is not easy to go forward when you aren't sure if someone will make a good cover while you are gone.

And don't get me wrong, RM defenders are really good players, all of them: Ramos, Pepe, Varane, Marcelo, Coentrao, Carvajal, Arbeloa...but they are not consistent, they are oscillating too much from game to game...and I can understand that for youngsters like Carvajal and Varane, but Pepe, Ramos and others have quite a few years in their boots in top tier football.

The striker position in Real for the last 4-5 years has been a very abnegate role, having to play for the rest of players, making spaces... I think Benzema (and Higuain back at the day) are very unfarily criticized. The team plays much better when Benzema is in the field, even if he doesn't score.

It happened the same with Villa at Barcelona before his injury, similar roles having to live in the shadow of giants. If you put a selfish striker there, you risk Cristiano getting pissed off.

Madrid plays a great counter attack game, which is easier when you have the most expensive squad ever. The problem is having control of the match and dominate their opponents, which is harder when you have that power players in front, all of them devoted of running and direct football. It's great because your team scores loads. It's bad because it's harder to control the matches, specially against teams who can play possession.

Changing this balance to be more solid behind would involve less counter attacks, less direct football and probably less goals scored and received. But Real players are not cut for that the same way Barcelona players can play quick direct footblal like Madrid does.

If Madrid wants to lift important trophies, they need to find a midfield which stands more solid without losing punch. To me, Alonso and Illarra can do that, while Modric shines more in more advanced positions and Khedira is too wild to play there, he looses position too much and the team breaks in the middle.

What you clearly don't understand is that a striker that moves like a striker will create room for Bale, Ronaldo, Di Maria, Isco and even the etc that you mention while Benzema is being everywhere except where he is supposed to be and doing everything except what he's supposed to do.

This movement is why Torres has managed to keep his spot in Chelsea. Even if he haven't scored non stop he's moved like a striker and pulled defenses out of order to create room for others. Robert Lewandowski does this in addition to scoring, for example. Benzema on the other hand seems to have a intese wish to become an attacking midfielder. He would be great in a 4-4-2 setup.

Note that neither Lewandowski or Torres are selfish strikers. If Madrid wants to go French, they should get Giroud.

chicharito would be the perfect man for madrid imho. a low profile guy, who'd welcome any chance he get in front of the goal.

He'd be pointless, even more so now. every position that he'd try to take up in the box is where Ronaldo and now Bale will be cueing up for.

The last thing Real need is a goal scorer, basically what Giroud is currently doing at Arsenal is what they need.

to me the biggest reason why real underachieved in the last seasons was benzema's and higuain's dreadful wastefulness. real never seemed like in need of a passing big man, higuain and benzema should have just put it in the goal and it's done. did they ever do that in an important game? very, very rarely. giroud is a player that's always eyeing a pass from his teammates which is definitely not the case at real right now because of shoot-first players like ronaldo and bale, unlike arsenal where attacks start with four or five very good passers in the midfield, and also giroud's finishing is not really up there with the best too. ronaldo and bale are the type of players love having the ball at their feet and chicharito, he can convert any mistake from the defenders, any mistake from the goalkeeper after a ronaldo/bale shot in the blink of an eye, like a vulture. that's the point.

First of all, Higuain is showing at Naples how good of a striker he is. It shows how the dependency on Ronaldo and his movements, speciffically when he cuts inside, affect the position of striker. At some degree Ronaldo movements and obsession with finishing the plays himself make some of his teammates look worse, the same way Messi dependancy in Barcelona made players like Villa look worse and their main task is not scoring, but moving defenders out of place for others to cut in.

That's exactly what Benzema does very well, and Higuain did too. They practically drag defenders away and make Ronaldo more dangerous and open up space for him. That's what Real needs and that's exactly what they provide. Would it be better if they also scored loads of goals? Well, obviously, but for every chance Benzema has, Ronaldo has 4 or 5. So comparing numbers won't give you the real picture.

There aren't that many strikers who can run, head, pass, have some degree of strength and vision to create spaces and who won't collide with Ronaldo's ego.

Real Madrid could do with a false 9' now IMO, with Bale and Ronaldo wide and a player centrally coming slightly deeper who can then command the game from there and give them a bit more solidarity through midfield with 3 behind in midfield.

RM should focus on defending in numbers. About ROnaldo`s ego he has more twitter fans then Barca as a club! and more than most ppl in the world. That ego is the size of a planet  . Im liking RM this season ,because they`re unpredictable . RM don`t have a steady XI only a steady 6 .

I don`t see Ronaldo n Messi the same though. Messi is sharing the responsibilities more than ever imo. Ronaldo seems to be part of the coaching meetings n selections. :P

I am amazed at how good RM team looked tonight against Valladolid. They were great in attacks (as they were for most of the games this season) but they finally looked good at the back too. I know that this was "only" Valladolid, but there already were "only" teams that had caused many problems.

Aye, and to go along with that Gareth Bale is quickly proving the nay sayers wrong and showing he can indeed carry a team in lieu of CR if need be. I really hope Real and Bayern will meet this year..would be some exciting games!

I was one of those "nay" guys when Bale was signed...I still think that he was overpaid for, but he is proving very useful.

And a little joke I found on other forum
First Name: Gareth
Last Name: Bale
Occupation: Cristiano Ronaldo!

the reason of Real conceiding many goals this season, is Alonso's absence, he came back, the defense is strong again, defense isn't only the last line.

And recent matches only show how inmensely good Benzema is. Never understood why on earth Higuain and Benzema had to be constantly doubted by the fans. If only we had one of them right now...

I agree. But than, there is an obvious problem: Xabi is in his last years of active play. Who will take his role once he hangs his boots? Modrić is good, but not that strong like Alonso. Casemiro looks good, but we haven't seen so much of him so we can't really judge him. Khedira is injury prone. Illaramendi is like a bit weaker version of Modrić...my personal opinions though...

Real Madrid has had a questionable defence thanks to this obsession with offensive players whenever Florentino Perez is at the helm assembling his Galacticos. This defence may be stronger than that old one with Pavon and Helguera, but at the end of the day it's still made of a pair of butchers (Pepe and Ramos), Arbeloa (a very limited and weak player) and Marcelo, who is a liability defending. It does get better with Coentrão, who's more balanced than Marcelo. Varane is a good young and promising player, but still has some way to go.

Their conceding more in La Liga, which is a concern for Ancelotti, but they do tend to get found out in the CL too. Hence the schooling they got from Dortmund while Ramos elbowed Lewandowski's head about 267 times times but still was chasing shadows.
