Rangers Thread

Re: The Rangers Thread - Le Guen révolution commence!

well PLG has just quit. wonder if Murray told him that he never had his backing?

i hope Murray doesnt do something silly and gets in terry butcher and Graham Roberts.

Walter Smith, Alex McLeish and Graeme Souness would all be crazy choices. I would like Ranieri to be giving the job.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Le Guen révolution commence!

PAUL LE GUEN'S reign as Rangers manager is over after just seven months - making it shortest reign in the club's history.

Rangers Football Club today announced by mutual agreement with Manager Paul Le Guen that he will relinquish his position as Manager of the first team with immediate effect.

Chairman Sir David Murray commented: "Having met with Paul it was clear that in the interests of the Club and all concerned we agreed jointly to him stepping down as Manager.

"We are all clearly disappointed with our current circumstances and will now focus on securing a suitable replacement. I would like to wish Paul and his management team well in the future."

Paul Le Guen stated: "I am disappointed to leave the Club, but I think it is the best solution for all concerned.I would like to thank all the people who helped me and my team during my spell in Scotland.

"In particular I would like to thank the Directors who at all times gave me their total support."

There will be no further comment from the Club regarding the Manager's position, Reserve Team Coach Ian Durrant will be temporarily responsible for first team training.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

Skysport's news said that walter smith is favourite for the job, just behind him is billy davies. i think both managers would be good, with what they have both done in there current jobs, with walter smith helping scotland get good results in there group so far and billy davies guiding derby into the top three of the championship.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

Exactly. Who would want the Rangers job now, knowing that if Barry Ferguson doesn't like you, you'll be chopped?

yeah you right B.Ferguson is a little cun* ,he thinks is bigger than the club plus the chairman gave him the right to think like that!!if he was really good do you think PLG would have dropped him?Which manager will be so stupid to drop a player so good??

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

To tell the truth we don't know the full story of what happened between barry and plg, but plg was'nt gettin good results and you can tell by how many points were off celtic that it's not been a good season so far,he's signings in the summer were all not great except clement.i'd like to see walter smith as the next rangers manager.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

The bookies have stopped taking any bets on Walter Smith becoming the next manager already.

The strong rumours are that Smith and McCoist will be installed on Monday.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

They should hire Ally n Gazza:lol: the atmoshpere would be great oj. Smith n mcCoist:D i would love that.

In some respects this can be true what is said about Barry, he used to have a bad image for being a ned. I know that he has been a bit funny with fans in the past. But as a footballer and a player for RFC you cant argue with his commitment. As I said before what went on with him and PLG is not 100% clear, its obvious that the Rangers way and the PLG way had a difference of opinion. In the past Rangers players (more so the captain) have to told players to get their socks up and pull their finger out. It was accepted to some degree and has worked in the past. As I said if Barry was constructive then I'm with him but if he was just abusive then I would be in disagreement.

I think this was clearly a tool for PLG, this got him the escape clause with being sacked. Piss off most of the fans by striping the captain and most loved Rangers player in recent years of his role. I think when he made that choice he was politely asking to part ways on "mutual" terms.

I also think through this it shows the lack of flexibility and character of PLG. Believe me I was ecstatic to see him come to Rangers, thought he was going to do wonders but it never happened. Partly due to the fact he never had the right money or team he did at Lyon partly due to his McLeish like signings.

To look at this like Barry Ferguson is bigger than the club and any manager that comes will have to abide by this is off the mark. Yes he holds respect from many corners of the club, as did Roy Keane, Totti, Raul. For any manager to come to a club with a player like this know they have a fans favourite from the get go but this doesn't give these players the ability to call the shots. Respect and power is two different things. PLG knew what he had in his hand and played it, if Cappelo told the board that Raul was off or he was then you know what would happen same about Spalleti at Roma.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

You honestly think Le Guen fabricated this to get out of Rangers?

You're having a laugh. He did not need to do that to leave Rangers.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

I think he used this to his advantage, It could have got messy if he just stood up and asked to walk away. This way he gets thing more on his terms, he is giving Murray the ultimatum knowing what the response is. I don't think Murray wanted this to happen this way even a month ago. You seen what happened with the fans as soon as he dropped Ferguson, instant anger towards PLG. When he made the interview on Setanta he made it clear that Ferguson would not play under him, implying two things that Ferguson was to go or he was. Look where we are now.

If this season continued like it did no doubt in the summer if no signs of improvement he would have been up for the boot. He manipulated a situation to get what he wants and it looks like a move to PSG. If he is at PSG in a few weeks then for me it was all to clear what happened.

Heard a strong rumour that McCoist will come in next week and Walter Smith will be director of football.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

getting in walter smith is going backwards. has murray forgot what a joke rangers were under smith when playing in europe! honestly rangers need a european manager.

this is a good read and i make PLG right when it comes to the drinking culture at the club. it should be removed and i have no idea why players can not give it up.

we had a european manager, he's now away back to france. i personally think that walter and ally is a forward step, after recent results we can only get better. they would be a great managment team, especially with the two of them being rangers men. walter smith won lot's of trophies with rangers and thats what the fans want trophies, personally if we were next year win the league and get knocked out of europe at the first hurdle i would'nt care.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

yeah don't get me wrong I want trophies but also want some success in Europe.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

Rangers need to become competitive in Scotland again before they can even think about moving forward in Europe, Smith/McCoist would certainly do a far better job than the all-conquering, all-powerful, 'Best Young Manager in Europe' Le Guen in that respect.

We need to start in scotland and work are way up.so far good run in the uefa cup, if that came back to ibrox that would be great but we ned to win stuff in scotland.

RANGERS have agreed a loan deal with Wigan for Scotland internationalist Andy Webster until the end of the season, subject to registration.

The 24-year-old central defender, who spent five years with Hearts before joining English Premiership outfit Wigan, said: "I am delighted to return to Scotland with Rangers.

"I have obviously played against them many times during my time at Hearts and I can't wait to pull on the jersey on a regular basis in front of 50,000 supporters at Ibrox.

"I have agreed to join on loan until the end of the season and hopefully I can extend my stay beyond that."

The player, who has yet to be allocated a squad number, will be ineligible for Sunday's Scottish Cup tie at East End Park.

Andy Webster has made a nightmare start to his loan spell with Rangers, picking up an injury that will see him out of action for up to four weeks.

The Scotland defender joined the Glasgow outfit on Friday from Wigan Athletic until the end of the season.

But the 24-year-old is believed to have suffered medial ligament damage during training on Saturday.

And, as the rest of the squad face Dunfermline on Sunday, he will undergo a scan to assess the full damage.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

Well 2nil down to the Pars. I gota say in over 20 years of supporting Rangers that has got to be the worst performance i have seen so far !!

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

I read how murray is angry with ferguson and will not let him be captain again. the whole culture at the club is a mess, i think the players didnt like the methods PLG had from day 1.

players hated the no drink request which is a joke!

advocatt had the chance to get rid of the wrong culture and bring in his own players. PLG couldnt that!

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

Dunfermline 3-2 Rangers

Dunfermline manager Stephen Kenny won his first match in nine attempts to knock Rangers out of the Scottish Cup.

Jim Hamilton blazed in the opening goal and Stephen Simmons shot home the Fifers' second after 28 minutes.

Phil McGuire headed the Pars further ahead after the break before Kris Boyd reduced the gap with a shot and header.

Barry Ferguson and Boyd went close for the visitors, who parted company with manager Paul Le Guen on Thursday, but the home side held on for victory.

Ferguson was recalled to the Rangers midfield after being stripped of the captaincy and dropped by Le Guen, but Gavin Rae continued to lead the side under the guidance of temporary manager Ian Durrant.

Dunfermline had not scored in their last five matches but immediately looked dangerous against a rudderless Rangers.

Simmons came close to opening the scoring with a speculative 35-yard drive but keeper Allan McGregor managed to turn the skidding ball past the post.

Rangers' Karl Svensson had a header saved by Roddy McKenzie and Alan Hutton was guilty of a shocking miss when his close-range header cannoned off the back of Pars defender Owen Morrison.

Dunfermline had failed to open the scoring in any of their matches this season but broke that dismal record after 17 minutes.

A deep cross from Scott Morrison was missed by the Rangers defence and found Hamilton, who took a touch and slammed in a powerful angled drive from six yards.

Jim O'Brien, making his Dunfermline debut after moving on loan from Celtic, powered a header on target but team-mate Stevie Crawford got in the way.

However, the home side managed to double their lead soon after thanks to some calamitous Rangers defending.

Hutton could only head a cross straight up in the air and the ball fell to Scott Morrison, who sent an overhead kick into the path of Simmons.

The Pars man scuffed a shot against Svensson only for the ball to ricochet off Julien Rodriguez and back to the home midfielder.

Simmons then gleefully blasted a shot high into the net from eight yards out.

Five minutes before the interval, Rae squandered a chance to reduce the deficit when he headed a Charlie Adam corner wide.

Rangers needed a positive start to the second half but the visitors found themselves further behind inside two minutes of the re-start.

Morrison swung in a corner and McGuire out-jumped Hutton to crash the ball home.

Another mix-up in the Rangers defence saw the ball fall to Hamilton but the striker's awkward scooped shot was saved by McGregor.

Rangers hit back with a neatly worked goal on 54 minutes when Rae ran on to a cute Nacho Novo back-heel and cut the ball back for Boyd to slam home.

Boyd then got on the end of an Ian Murray cross to find the net with a close-range header.

With Dunfermline pinned back, Ferguson hit the bar with a header and Boyd fizzed a shot inches wide.

But, despite the incessant pressure, Dunfermline held on to leave Rangers' season in tatters.

Sums it up really. "Tatters"
Wasters the lot of them. Walter and Ally will have some job sorting out this mess.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Paul Le Guen resigns!

Although I like Celtic, I want Rangers to actually compete for something. The SPL is a total joke at the moment, and has been for years.
2 teams dominating the league, this has now turned into 1 team domination.

Rangers need to get their act together to make the SPL a little entertaining.

WALTER SMITH is the new manager of Rangers.

Smith's appointment has just been confirmed and he will be joined in the dug-out by Light Blue legend, Ally McCoist, who also makes the move from the Scottish national team to become Rangers' new assistant manager, and Kenny McDowall, the former Celtic reserve boss, who becomes first-team coach.

The new management team's first match in charge will be at Ibrox this Saturday against Dundee United, ironically the team where it all started for Smith.

A club statement reads:

Rangers Football Club today (Wednesday January 10, 2007) confirmed Walter Smith, Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall as the new Management Team.

Walter, who first joined in 1986 as Graeme Souness' assistant before guiding Rangers to its historic Nine In A Row triumph, returns as Manager while Ally joins as Assistant Manager and Kenny completes the new-look backroom team as First-Team Coach.

Chairman Sir David Murray commented: "It is a great pleasure to welcome Walter and Ally back to Rangers Football Club. I have great respect for both men and their achievements and I am convinced they will take the Club forward.

"I would also like to extend a special welcome to Kenny. He has a terrific track record as a coach and will undoubtedly enhance our new Management Team."
Smith, who has transformed Scotland's National side and managed Everton since leaving Ibrox in 1998, has signed a three-year contract with the Club.

He commented: "I am delighted to return to Rangers as Manager. This Club has always been in my blood and I can't wait to get started.

"I am looking forward to teaming up with Ally and Kenny. I worked side by side with Ally during our time with the National team and I am also delighted Kenny has agreed to join us at Ibrox."

McCoist, the Club's record marksman with an incredible 355 goals in 581 appearances between 1983 and 1998, stated: "It was a privilege to pull on the Rangers jersey for so many years but I am delighted to return as Assistant Manager.

"I was honoured to be named in the Greatest Ever Rangers Team and included in the Club's Hall of Fame but this is something really special. I know the Club inside out and I am ready for the challenge."

McDowall, the former St Mirren and Partick Thistle striker who has a proven track record as a youth coach with Celtic FC, commented: "This is an exciting new chapter in my life and I am relishing the chance to team up with Walter and Ally at Rangers.

"Working at Murray Park on a daily basis will also be a real thrill."

I don't mean to put a downer on it for you Rangers boys, it must be great having some legends back at the club. But is this really a good thing for Scottish football in general. Just as the national team are doing well.
BBC
The Scottish Football Association will now take legal action against him (Smith) "for breach of contract" and against Rangers "for inducement to break the contract".
Not exactly a nice way to end the Scotland job.

Re: The Rangers Thread - Smith, McCoist & McDowall the new management!

If that's what the SFA want to do then that's their perogative. They don't have a case however.

Whilst a lot of supporters dislike Sir David Murray's running of the club, he's not daft. He knows the SFA don't have a case.

I look forward to the SFA being hard on Rangers in other areas of football now.
