PES 2014 made me forget about Fifa release this year. I think that Konami now has a pretty solid core to extend in the future.
I was a Fifa player from 2009 to 2012 and i didn't like the direction this game gone on 2013 so i didn't bought it at all. Fifa had a chance to establish themselves if they priorise modes like Clubs but i guess they believed that they found the magic formula that would allow them to keep producing "samey" games without solid improvements to the core and get away with the same sales.
I believe that PES 2014 developers tried to make it a hardcore simulation and i think that they came very close to that target. IMHO the game is so simulation-based that i enjoy it more when i play with one player selected (be a legend, or fixed cursor) where i am able to switch between different camera views (player and ball). When i try to play the game with semi-assisted player switching i hardly create any chances.
I usually play on Superstar difficulty , 0 bars passing, advanced through balls and manual shot.
When i pick a single player i am able to control his positioning and momentum and with the help of the right stick i can even get past 1 or 2 players. I really believe that this game is made to be played like that and has the potential to become super fun if 11v11 implemented right (no lag).
Lastly i would like to make one little observation that could make the game even better when played with unassisted player switching. When i am controling one player (fixed cursor) i am able to switch views with the select button but this isn't the case with unassisted player switching. One detail that would improve playing with unassisted settings.
