Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

Like every year, the first impressions are " I'm speechless" " what a game " "the best PES for ever" and a few hours later issues and problems begin to appear :( Every year the same story.

With people like you is obviously it's going to keep happening

Please speak for yourself, for the first time in this gen the game has received a version that deserves.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

Is it me or have they taken away the ability to edit formations just by moving players around on the tactics screen?

I only seem to be able to select pre-set formations.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

Jimmy, I'm using Advanced Shooting. After about 15 games I think I've managed 6-7 shots, most from longish range and they are coming off a bit loopy, dropping down at the last second under the bar, always top corner.

Help me out here. I'd like to pull off a low screamer (or an over the bar screamer for that matter).

Try shoot then sprint I think it is, performs a low drive. That maybe not the button combo, but I'm tired, in bed now. Will clarify tomorrow if incorrect.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

Some negative points:

-The players always make perfect blind passes.

-Chip shots are overpowerd. I've scored so many.

It's shoot and then Y (or triangle) for low drives. For a "knuckle" shot it's shoot followed by hitting shoot right before the player strikes the ball. I've hit a lot of low, hard shots from outside the area. Feels good for the most part. If I don't specifically go for a low/knuckle shot, the shot tends to be a bit floaty.

The CPU does the same two moves over, and over and over again.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

Played for several hours today (playing Top Player, 1-bar assist, unassisted through balls and shooting). Stuff i've noticed:

- Playing one-touch football feels good and not like ping-pong, especially when playing with a formation like Spain's, with players close together
- AI makes mistakes but also plays good football(Playing on top player btw)
- IMO, AI much like Phoenix patch AI (switching tactics during gameplay, active, passing back or clearing the ball when no one to pass to)
- Jostling for the ball gives negatives and positives. Had a situation where Sergio Ramos and a Santos player were running towards a loose ball, use the right stick to body-shove. It resulted in Ramos aggressively pushing the Santos player off his feet. But in another situation, i was able to successfully recover the ball, without a foul or having the competing player falling to the ground.
- Double-tapping R1 (on PS3 obvs.) risky, yet helpful. After dancing past two players with Iniesta and using sprint, i was able to successfully lose them. In other cases, you could knock the ball too far ahead, only for an opposing player to retrieve the ball.
- Not sure if its just me, but you can feel the difference between several players. IE, players like Pique are able to hold of attackers due to his size, and also retrieve the ball while jostling for it. Players like Iniesta can jostle for some time (much like real life, they fight for the ball), but can also swiftly turn and lose a man. Players like Xavi, Riquelme, Pirlo, run the midfield, and can make all the correct passes.

Some negatives:

- Looks like through balls will be the most spammed way of scoring goals. When the tactic that makes one of your players run toward goal, or they run after a pass (just don't complete a one-two), defenders rarely notice them and dont mark. So one again this is the issue of player-awareness
- Bugs (clipping, slowdown). Most likely fixed on retail realease.

Shit. I only realized just now I've been playing on "regular". Haha, that's embarassing. So, 10 more games then, on top player, and let's see how that pans out. :) Thanks for the heads up!

do you mean press shoot, then allow animation to begin, then press Y, or do you mean press shoot and Y immediately following?

That makes sense, Triangle for me is Sprint.

For low shots I tend to hit Y immediately after shooting. Seems to work out, but I'm not certain.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

Shooting from distance in real life is never easy. Most of the time the shooter fail to hit the ball cleanly, let alone to hit the target. I hope they're able to capture that essence.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

After 10 games on Top Player level, 1 bar pass support...

Hmmmmm

- The pace is good, with lots of build-up play.
- Collisions and headers are great - v 'realistic'.
- The new animations are nice and the movment mechanics feel 'right'. You can feel the individuality, but maybe the star players are a bit too nimble?
- But, the background graphics - pitch and crowd - are not the best. There is noticeable skating, and the crowd sways, zombie-like, in unision.
- PS3 is beginning to show it's age! I'm getting frequent slowdowns and some weird ball movements. I'm sticking with PC :P
-Catch-up bug is far too obvious.
- Keepers are still suspect.
-Is it me or is Basic shooting too easy? Advanced feels about right. I scored this nice Ribery goal using advanced.

http://youtu.be/9x_zDqUTwIc

Then I scored a screamer with Martinez from outside the box in the same game. Now I notice that most of my long shots are on target, so I'm prone to take my chances from outside the box rather than work my way in. As I play mostly online, this is a concern: games could be reduced to pot-shot fests/

Need to play more.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

I haven't played the demo enough to judge but how effective are the long shots generally? I remember in PES 6 it was incredibly easy to get shots on target but they barely ever went in. Sort of likewise, crossing in Pro Evo has been absurdly too good for years but it's rare for crosses to ever amount to anything. In fact, I think they are still that way.

They are both arbitrary systems and it's a shame the game doesn't have better physics in that sense to compensate (Fifa does really well there but let's not get into rivalries). My own thoughts are that the end results are generally the most important thing. If the game ends up having too many goals scored from crosses or long shots only then is it truly a major issue.

Pro Evo has always allowed you to do some things too easily (lofted through balls springing instantly to mind) but they are usually ineffective. It is just a game at the end of the day and as much as that's a bit of a cop-out, the main thing needed for an excellent sports game is balance. That's what PES used to do so well so, at least for me, that's what I hope to see return regardless of the inevitable flaws that the game will have.

Toby Ross ‏@Xaor 7h
Two demos to play, lots of things to write and say. Early days yet, but hard to see past PES as the gameplay king this year.

Coming from a big time FIFA player and critic i think that say a lot for this year PES.

I liked his "Xaor's corner". Everybody can be a critic, but not many can transform those critics into an idea or solution. To me that's what make his column stand-out. I hope he can do one for PES in the future.

Nah, it seems fine in terms of effectiveness. I've played quite a few games and I often take long shots with the likes of Schweinsteiger and Pogba (tend to go for the spectacular at times) and you definitely need some space to have good contact. While it's not terribly difficult to get shots on target (playing with Basic Shooting) I can't recall many (hardly any) shots from distance going in. Assuming I get good contact, they're usually saved or go just wide. Your comparison to PES 6 shooting is pretty apt.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

I have only just started playing the demo on the PS3. So far i have played 3 games and my first impressions is that this is excellent! :BOP:

Playing on 'Regular' at the moment until i get used to it. The AI is really good for the opposition and for your team mates. Always running into good positions. I like the way Van Persie and Rooney are running back to help out the defence but then running forward to break away.

Wellbeck had a great effort for England against me (Man Utd), he was standing on the edge of the box with 2 defenders on him and he just rolled the ball to the side and tried a little curler which just went wide. Then Cole was bombing down the wing approaching my penalty area, he lost control of the ball slightly so Defoe just took the ball off of him and had a snap shot :BRMM: I have never seen that before in a game.

I have been reading some people saying the graphics are not as sharp on PS3 but for me i think they are fine :)) Even the commentating is ok, i normally turn it off straight away but most of the time they just mention players names "Rooney to Van Persie back to Rooney" makes it more bearable.

The only problem for me at the moment is the lack of fouls. 3 games and 1 foul. I really hope they sort that out but i don't think they will. But if the gameplay is still as good as this in the retail version then i'm sure i can put up with the lack of fouls and the ref might as well go take a walk because we don't need him :P

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

Haven't had a chance to look at any of the new controls but I'm really liking the gameplay. Once I can put the speed down to -1 I think it'll be perfect. I really enjoy the fact that FINALLY I have full control of the keeper when he has the ball in his hands, and throws are finally fixed. Also did an awesome bit of skill with Chamberlain using the right and left sticks, was just experimenting but he wriggled between two players with a drop of the shoulder and flick of the ball with both feet :D animations really are great.

I also like how I scored and as my player was celebrating, the camera cut to a shot of Joe Hart punching the air back in goal. Nice.

First thing I'll do on retail version though is to change or remove the commentary, it's worse than ever. Several times, a goal has gone in and he's just been talking in a monotone, uninterested manner. Really weird. Oh and the faces are hilarious. Rooney was on the menu screen and I wasn't sure it was even him. Both Rooney and Lampard's faces are absolutely hilarious.

Re: PES 2014 Discussion Thread (NO FIFA DEMO TALK IN HERE!)

Could be a poorly optimised engine or just plain bad coding by Konami. All I can say is PES2013 on PC barely brings my graphics card out of idle mode (and that's with graphical mods installed) yet looks substantially better than the console versions. I know the 360 and PS3 are ageing platforms but PES doesn't seem to be a particularly demanding game. Perhaps you are right to demand better graphics from this game, especially at the end of the console cycle when all the graphical tricks and exploits should be known.

I'd wager Konami are still struggling with PS3 as it's notoriously fiddly to develop for. The 360 has had the graphically superior version of PES this entire generation so it wouldn't surprise me if the Xbox version is miles sharper. I'm tempted by the PC version but ill wait for its PS4 debut I think. Whenever that may be. But I no longer have XBL gold so ill have to wait until next week to see how they've managed with the 360.

You PC owners will be in for a treat. 1080p, mods, I bet tons of dodgy faces will be replaced by fans (Lampard looks just plain weird).

Wow, I have to say, switching from Regular to Top Player is ESSENTIAL! Gameplay is so much better, so much more fluid, and both your own players AI and the CPU players AI are being so much smarter now. The only thing I've noticed is that the goalkeepers are still quite shit, and some of their animations look terribly dated. But overall, wow, what an upgrade from Regular, it's like it's a new game.

I only seem to be able to select pre-set formations.

Select the player and move him around with analog not dpad or else you'll sub him with another player.
