It's a really tough thing to do, I imagine. I think that's why there has always been an element of scripting to the gameplay in PES, otherwise recreating the ebb and flow of a real match with all that entails would be incredibly difficult within such a small timeframe.
The standard ten minute match isn't going to go away as I'm guessing it is the most popular match length, particularly with casual players. Those that play 15 minute matches or longer are in the minority so it's going to be interesting to see how PES is received this year with this in mind. Expect plenty of comments about being difficult to score and boring.
The thing is, you can't really add a match length setting higher than 30-min, 'cause real football games aren't much longer, trust me.
In real football time is running all the time, even during throw-ins, corners, etc, so in the end there's a lot of wasted time. So of an overall 90-min game, the teams have actually played 40-50-min, sometimes even less.
In football games, time stops when there's an incidence. This makes a huge difference, so if you had to play a 90-min game, it would be completely unrealistic.
I remember when I was a kid, that FIFA 99 included a setting to determine if the time continued or stopped after an incidence. I wonder why nobody tried to add that again.
