PES 2013 Discussion Thread

Konami fuck up every year in one way or another. I think it's definitely better not to rush out and buy PES on day one if you are in any doubt as to what Konami will mess up from year to year.

Look at the last couple of years - Konami have released games which are inferior to the demos, and in the case of last year fucked up the game further with patches. They never get transfers done correctly nor in a timely fashion, and the stability of online modes is often a lottery.

All I'm saying is perhaps this game should be left to mature for a few weeks/months before rushing out to buy it. I know that's what I'll be doing in future.

We all expect Konami ineptitude from game to game, but I don't see how I or anyone else deserves criticism for buying the game. The gameplay is great. But who could have envisaged Konami not being able to update teams properly? They've been guilty of many things with PES but at least they've managed to put player's in their proper positions, or put new signings into starting elevens.

Its like this year though they simply cant be bothered. You can see with Spurs, for example, that they just took all of their new signings, switched them from other clubs, and piled them at the back of the squad list with no thought that they might actually play.

Can anyone else confirm what Jimmy says though? During ML does the CPU pick its teams according to stats? Or does it carry on with it's default formations where teams have left backs plying centre midfield etc? I mean one team, I noticed for no reason the CB was playing RB and the RB was playing CB. Why?!
It's always been that way on PES.

Eh? :CONFUSE:

Konami NEVER update the teams properly mate! Maybe this year is slightly worse than previous years but they have been making mistakes regarding player position, club, stats, and even skin colour for years now.

My point is that I am dumbfounded as to why anyone is surprised by Konami's incompetence anymore. They've been consistently incompetent for years now. The direction they have taken this once great franchise in is baffling to the point where I believe they no longer give a shit about PES or it's fans. Isn't the definition of insanity making the same mistake over and over again? I think that applies to Konami and the people who have continued to stay loyal to the PES series despite being royally shafted by it year after year.

As for this "but the gameplay is great" myth that the PES Loyal love to spout I just dont see it. Each to their own and all that but I think the game is a buggy, scripted, unfair mess most of the time and when you couple that with all the other aesthetic problems it has doesn't it make you wonder why you bother? Even for a second? Put it this way; count how many moments of sheer joy you have while playing PES and stack them up against the amount of teeth gnashing, controller breaking frustration and general sense of feeling cheated moments. I know what comes out on top for me and I'm betting it's the same for many others. Games are supposed to be FUN. Remember?

We ALL want a great football game to play on this generation of tech but the simple truth is there isn't one. If you're genuinely happy with PES 2013 then good luck to you but I really do wonder what you'll do when or if someone produces a football game of genuine quality in the future. Self combust perhaps?

Or maybe you'll stay true to form and just keep playing PES. :P

We all say we will wait but get caught up on the PES hype train!

360 users have been badly treated in recent years from demos not turning up, stuttering that needed a patch and now the data pack 2 is still fucked.

Glad I switched to PS3

I think they missed an opportunity with the current scoreboard, when I first saw it in the demo I'd hoped they'd make it customisable based on the league you're playing.

A bit like this:

scoreboardsjysdd.jpg

Hardly a priority, but I suspect console users especially would welcome the feature.

Yeah me too. I wish I hadn't given Konami my cash has they have pushed out an unfinished game. It is really unacceptable, but I need a footy fix. I feel cheated and stupid in a way because they have gotten away with it and I contributed to the bad practice that is Konami making football games in the current market.

I think if I had the a pc I would have been happy playing the demo 1 with the 50 team unlock given the lack of content in the game. I don't think I will ever invest in pes again, unless the product is top notch.

I was thinking on something similar a few days ago. I like this secoreboard, but as you said, the PES2013 logo could have been more dynamic.

I think the gameplay is pretty good actually, probably on a par with the PS2 games for me. Even so, it's still well behind where it should be. The game is still using an ancient game engine, which essentially has its roots on the PS2. That dated engine has been prodded, poked and patched up by Konami to just about keep the gameplay contemporary. It will suffice. Just about.

However, I agree with the bolded part. I've said the same myself. PES isn't anywhere near where a next-gen football game could and should be. We are still waiting for that.

this pes is good!! only way they gone wrong 2v2 need normal 2v2 with the other 2v2 rubbish they chucked us funny thing is this game would actually be awesome 2v2 i dont understand y konami havent made normal 2v2 / 3v3 4v4 mode cause i could acyually see that being good and stopping people dislike game!!! .... why wouldnt they do that PES is better and has been for ages 2v2 normal would have made the definate

'Or maybe you'll stay true to form and just keep buying PES'. Hmm. Where did you get that from? I have no brand loyalty whatsoever. I never purchased any PES games on current gen until 2011, prior to that I thought they were shite and so didn't buy them. So, no, if a rival brings out a better football game then frankly I don't give a shit who makes it.

Whether I think it's got good gameplay or not, that's my opinion. I'm entitled to it, and it doesn't make me a mindless Konami fan-boy ready to part with my cash irrespective of what they do. The game this year was released with all of us in the know about ML, lack of league mode etc, but I bought it because the demos were great, as is the final version, in my opinion of course. Plus it doesn't help that there is only one other football game on the market right now, and that, again, in my opinion, is total shite nowadays.

If you don't think PES is fun anymore then that's your issue. Many of us still do. That doesn't make people mindless Konami drones ready to part with our money whenever they click their fingers.

Ah fuck it, I can't be bothered trying to justify myself to be honest. I like the game, it could be MILES better, I recognise that, but enjoy the gameplay for what it is in the absence of anything better. If a better game comes around, sure I'll love it, but until that happens I'd rather try and enjoy the game rather than slate others for liking something that you don't.

What is 'next-gen' though, graphics? PES 13 is easily on a par with the rest of the genre in that aspect, given the amount of processing and open-endedness.

In terms of game-mechanics, I don't think you could argue there's a next-gen standard. I'd argue the opposite, in that most series have regressed in depth and features in the last 5 or 6 years. The new X-Com is barely half the game of the '94 release, Deus Ex: HR a lot more restrictive then the original, no real innovations in FPS or racing games either....

The animations still lot a little archaic, but thats the nature of the game rather then anything else. I've made this comparison before but PES to FIFA, is like ARMA to CoD. The latter is more streamlined, fluid and aesthetically pleasing, the former scarifices that for the sake of the variables involved. The slight body feints and momentum can't be incorporated into FIFA, simply because it'd spoil the fluid, seamless transitions that it garners so much praise for.

This would no doubt sound incredibly fanboyish, but that's my take on it anyway. Personally, I think the game has evolved immensley in the past 6 or 7 years, even if inbetween then it had taken steps back.

The current football game duopoly means there is no real benchmark soccer title this gen. Both PES and FIFA have their strong points but neither is what I would call a serious evolution from the football games we used to play on the PS2. Graphics and animations have improved but gameplay and AI is still rooted in the past. That's just my opinion though.

For me you have to look at other sports titles to see how both PES and FIFA haven't hit their stride yet. The NBA2K franchise is the standard in the sports genre. That series hit the ground running right from the very start on this console generation.

Well I'm still loving the game guys. So much so that I'm still using one of the original option files I put on and have only bothered to download 1.01. Second season in ML and am fourth with Liverpool.

I've tried many combinations and each has a distinct feel about them with regards to how the game plays, but the last few days I've settled on Superstar, the default three bar passing, long cam and normal gamespeed at 15 minute games.

Taking all the side issues regarding league modes, boots etc etc out of the equation for a second, I can't honestly fault the gameplay. I'm hooked. Just reading over the various pages over the past few days and I just want to pick up on a few things that people have said and compare them to what I am experiencing.

1) Freedom. People are saying the game doesn't feel free. I can't disagree more. In my eyes, the game has absolutely nailed the balance between player movements being realistic and yet controllable. I feel it has gotten the perfect balance between perhaps too much rigidity in old gen PES', more freer than 2012, but isn't as fluid as the OTT FIFA in terms of turning and balance. So players feel - about perfect.

In terms of freedom with regards to the ball; again I can't see an issue. Depending on the teams and style of play the ball can just bounce anywhere. My modes of attack are hardly ever repetitive, the way the game breaks up is really realistic.

2) Game pace and flow. I have been a massive slower is better advocate over the years and even played 2011 and 2012 on -2 gamespeed. For some reason this year, I'm really feeling the game as it is, on gamespeed 0. It really does remind me of the feelings I had when I played PES 5/6. The way the ball can be pinged about, the way you can slow the game right down. For the first time in ages (and even though I learned to love 2011 and 2012) I'm actually looking forward to the game each and every time I fire up the PS3.

3) Enjoyment. Last year I spent more time messing with this, that, and the other, across a plethora of machines and on a thousand and one displays with a million gameplay patches and tweaks, that it just blew my mind in the end. This year I'm firing the game up, and actually ENJOYING IT, you know, like a video game should do. Genuine emotions when playing it this year.

4) Repetition, scripting and issues forom 2012. Been blasting this game since it came out, and I very rarely feel like the game has been played before. Each game honestly is just so diverse. Scripting? Okay, now and again there are elements that I feel are scripted. BUT - looking closer and looking at the bigger picture there is a definite logic most of the time. Like tired players, players in the wrong position, keepers off form, Crouch scoring two headed goals.

In 2012 I didn't feel the player had the tools to deal with the vast majority of the scripts. In 2013 you really do have the control to do almost everything to limit the scripting. Tackling works this year and is fair. Player positioning is better and player switching (after practicing your defensive play) is spot on. Players generally cut out balls and it's nowhere near as problematic as last year.

I've never been a dribbler, but this year I think has the perfect balance between passing and dribbling. With a dribbler, say like Suarez, you can really take people on, which brings me to my next point.

5) Player speed and taking people on. Seriously, what is people's problem with this this year? It's one of the most contextual football games ever in this respect. When Suarez is through, nobody catches him.....ever. There's just no 'catch up' bug. Am I missing something here. When a dribbler contextually is in a position to skin the defender I can do it all the time. Again, I can't see the issue?

6) People knocking player ID. Again can't see it personally. My favourite example is someone like Gerrard who is as strong as an ox and can just rebound off challenges. He has drive, a hard shot, isn't the fastest, but he's my play maker through and through. Lucas, enforcer he is. Suarez....just like Suarez. Carroll, slow, but powerful (hardly play him to be honest after this year headed goals have been toned down immensely).

I could go on with ID, but I'd just be convincing myself.

7) Shooting, passing, the games nuts and bolts. All near enough spot on.

8) The aerial game. Loving it. It's basically taken until now for me 'to get' the aerial game this year, but now I have the hang of it, I think it's top notch. Remember the button has to be pressed before you normally would as in getting the leverage to jump.

THINGS THAT ARE PISSING ME OFF - I don't know if it's me but the CPU is getting away with murder in terms of infringements in and around the box. Hardly any penalties get given. Player form. Simply totally and utterly illogical to the point of being a game breaker for me.

And that's about it.

GAMEPLAY alone, this game is a 9/10. Player movements offensively and defensively have been nailed in my eyes. The defensive game especially is just a complete joy. ENJOYMENT level of this game, it's like 9.5/10. Seriously when I'm playing this game I get fully amped, especially when the challenges are flying in left right and centre as both myself and the CPU are searching for that winner.

So anyway, just thought I'd give my two pennies worth to lift the gloom round here.

And on top of all that, playing online against fair, footballing minds, is an amazing experience. Better than offline, which I'm also really enjoying. So many options, and some brilliantly realistic mechanics.

I honestly bad by the people who have been screwed by the official patches from Konami.I'm actually speechless regarding the last few complaints on these couple of pages.
They shit on their fanbase

That's a bit harsh I feel , more ill-judged, schoolboy-error-esque decisions, that needlessly taint an otherwise fantastically well sculpted footballing experience. It's hard to stay angry over unfortunate issues when the rest is so damn good.

It's kinda like dealing with a stunning horny sex-kitten farting in your bed. Sure it's unfortunate, disappointing and quite frankly it stinks. But, she is hotter than hell, can suck a Mitre Delta through a garden hose and is tighter than a mouse ear. Basically, she farts, it stinks.

Hey, no big deal.......I ain't kicking her out of bed.

Same difference, go figure.

Props to this all the way. My only difference is Top Player, one bar passing (currently; with zero assistance I get too much possession because I'm so careful, so dainty, and with one bar I'm far more speculative but still make plenty of mistakes). Second year of my ML with Newcastle; I'm rock solid on the left side and decent in the midfield now that I have two box-to-box players. Next transfer window I work on the right side...love it!

For me, offline playing , vs CPU or with CPU(troll mode) is pretty much awful experience !

A.I. is really cheap.. all this talk about Pro active A.I. are just eyewash, GK's are still silly and nerve-wracking ...
I think the only way to enjoy the gameplay is to play with or against people, another option just is turn it off.

Well said. You know that feeling in pes, when you sometimes think, 'I can play whichever way I want on this game'. Well you couldn't. Until now.
Technical advancement, where it matters, on the pitch. There for all to see.

How many of you have gone back to the game as it was out of the box, Prepatch?

I am thinking of deleting the 1.01 patch and going back to how the game was out of the box. Back to it's Prepatch state.

The gameplay prepatch was as good as I have ever seen in any football game ever. Since the patch, it's gone downhill somewhat.

This, and I never thought I would find myself agreeing so much.

I had some problems with the game pre-patch and I initially welcomed the patch feeling that some of those problems had been eradicated or there impact on play somewhat dampened but after all of Friday playing the game with patch and all of Sunday minus the patch, I am in no doubt that the pre-patched version plays a far better game that isn't without it's problems.

- Pre-patch keepers are a bit iffy but having got to grips with the defensive game more I actually welcome this. There is just the right amount of uncertainty to be found in front my own or the COMS goal. Post-patch keepers hold on too shots too often.

- Dribbling is waaaaay more responsive and assured pre-patch. I am finding the transition in and out of R2 dribbling far snappier and along with it, the burst moves are far more responsive with there being a sensation of more angles available, not to mention heightened COM error in the tackle on Top Player.

- There is clearly less rails/scripts/ai routines at play pre-patch when it comes to loose balls or 50/50's. Having played numerous fixtures with and without the patch the difference is massive as post patch your players react slower to loose balls and passes and what is worse the need for Super Cancel in attack and Defence is through the roof but doesn't seem as responsive overall.

It's the last point which really sticks in my craw as I am beginning to think this is how the developers have looked to address user dominance of possession. While pre-patch the game generally plays a better game by far so far as having possession and winning the ball back goes (seems fairer) there is no doubt you can dominate possession with ease. Post patch you can still dominate but in my experiences it has been pegged back some and I do think it is the implementation of user controlled players and even team mates reacting slower to the ball or rigidly sticking to ai rails so as to allow the COM to win more loose balls and cut out passing moves. This is made all the worse again by the re-introduction of COM ghosting through tackles or displaying super-human strength with or without the ball.

So far as dribbling goes, I much prefer the better fluidity to be had pre-patch compare to the greater sensation of weight found post patch. There might not have been anything wrong with making dribbling a little heavier feeling and indeed some would I dare say prefer it this way, but when you layer on all those rails and scripts on top of it all it makes it a pretty unsatisfying game to play. I want the COM to get more possession but not at the expense of my of control over very basic tasks.

Like I say, pre-patch has issues but it just feels a fairer and more enjoyable game, if just a touch too easy dominate play.

Yes, I removed the patch for the first time tonight, instantly thought it was better.

Having tried the 'out of the box' version again, I've noticed that passing on zero assistance feels slightly harder. I think theres a tiny bit more variation of accuracy between players. I think, for the patch, Konami made it easier to pass on zero. Let's put it this way, I played version 1.1 tonight, had a passing accuracy of 81%. Remove the patch, with the same team, it was down to 69%. I think this is great, by the way.

The other alteration in the patch is how the CPU plays when attacking. There is, to me, a very clear difference. Post-patch, the CPU was constantly ploughing the ball forwards at every opportunity, all CPU teams sit as a defensive unit much, much deeper, leaving a couple of lone forwards as in PES2012, and the CPU barely ever attempted anything other than through-balls. I also noticed that physical challenges are a lot more forgiving and even between the two sides, and noticed a LOT more CPU errors in passing and control. Simply put, pre-patch, the AI feels much more human. Post-patch, it somehow feels robotic at times and too 'perfect' with its accuracy.

I also noticed how, in the original version of the game, the CPU players sit higher up the field as a unit, is far, far less direct, and as a result I found the match I played took place mainly in midfield. No constant counter-attacking, no quick ping pong CPU passing, no CPU attackers constantly skipping over challenges, it was a joy to play. It's no easier, I lost the game 2-1 as Chelsea v Fenerbache, but I was beaten by two really well worked CPU goals. Prior to removing the patch, I felt kinda bummed out after losing because I either felt like CPU goals were being scored with nothing I could do to stop them. I don't get that feeling with the original version.

I'm not sure why it was changed, they're tiny alterations to game code that have a huge effect on the game. Seems like they were trying to make it more end to end, more 'exciting'. But for me, the pre-patch version is superior.

Yup, the out of the box version is the PES I remember absolutely loving just a short while ago.

Quick question, I've got everything ready now for the game, data pack 1 only installed, patch removed, option file added, and I've done around 50 or so of the major European transfers (frankly, ignorance is bliss regarding the rest of them to be honest).

I then changed the name of the Div2 league to the correct name of the Spanish second division, and changed the team names for those teams, as well as crowd sounds to Spanish etc.

However, when I go in to start a Master League, the league name for Div2 just reverts back to its original name. I exit and go back into edit, and it's still got the Spanish league name I'd already assigned it.

Does anyone know why this would be happening? The rest of the leagues seem fine, those were edited with the option file I'm using, but the Div2 league seems to just ignore its new name when I start a Master League.

Also, can anyone who's done a ML confirm whether or not the teams from the European club section (the one with Bayern, Anderlecht, Fenerbache, Dynamo Kiev etc) make an appearance in the Champions League and Europa League? I'm hoping they do and that I won't have to bother switching them all to the WE League that is set up in ML as a proper league.
