PES 2011 Discussion thread

Hand on heart Nick, after what you put up with but still enjoyed about the MM, you and your bud will be blown away by the offline ML. 100's of thousands of unique players at your disposal. Youth Team Academy, varying Scouts, Fitness Coach's, Doctors, team Coach's, its as deep as the ocean. And when you take 3-4 years to build your own sqaud, then get into the Europa League for the first time, its as satisfying as it gets.
I'll hold you to that Jimmy... ;)

I am looking forward to it though, I just know it's going to be hard to go through that relearning again, I'm sure you can't play both at the same time.. it's like Gerrard and Lampard... :P

Spending you limited resources to raise the standard of your Youth Academy, then watching great young players come through to the first team is awesome. Then training them week in week out in the areas you wish them to improve, then spending a million to train them in first-touch, 1 on1 finishing, the Passer card, really brings you so close to them as you watch them improve before your eyes. They are your kids and they feel like family. :)

Funny you wrote that cause after reading Nick's impressions of fifa's Career Mode, I wrote this:

Well that might just do it for me - really can't see myself playing FIFA all that much this year if PES is as good as the early impressions make it out to be.

I know different people have different expectations and preferences when it comes to a manager mode, but EA has taken out some of my favorite features, like manual player growth and finding undiscovered youth via the old scout, while they've added nothing to replace them. Honestly, CM is so watered-down I might as well just play custom league tournaments - I mean, manager mode should be about creating, developing, and molding a club, and yet aside from transfers they've removed all hands-on, interactive features.

Seriously, what the frag have they been doing all year? I didn't see one bit of good news in all that. Utterly disappointed atm. Lets go pes.

FIFA's manager mode has always paled in comparison to ML, but now with their new CM they've taken out every feature meant to establish a connection between you and your club.

Been away from ML and PES for a couple years but now counting the days before 2011's release like a little boy waiting for Christmas!

The ML since its revamp in PES 2010 is phenomenal. And trying to do it on a shoe-string budget, starting off in the Coca Cola Championship with a lesser team is a real challenge. Its all about trying to balance your budget, gaining sponsorships and trying to improve your set-up. But its a long hard road, which makes it the satisfying. It took my Boro team 2 seasons to get into the Premiership, and even then only on the last day. The season before I got a lucky FA Cup run and reached the final before Liverpool battered me. I then failed to win promotion on the last day, heartbreaking but typical Boro.

As the next season started, I couldnt believe it when I saw I'd qualified by the Europa Cup by finishing runner-up in the F.A. Cup, as Liverpool qualified for the Champs league finishing 2nd in the Premier League. It was an brilliant feeling. Even more so, in my last Europa Cup League game I needed to win. I was 2-1 at halftime, and decided to go 3-4-3 and brought on one of my kids from my Youth Academy. His stats were shocking, 54 rating overall, but he was 6 foot 9 and I gave him his pro contract based on his size and possible ariel threat. It was his debut, he scored after 5 minutes, very comical, his first touch was so poor a cross bounced straight off his shin and rolled in with the keeper wrong footed. He then won a header to set up an assist. We won, and on his debut he was the hero at Riverside, his parents were in the stadium and everything, even his Gran, oh was she proud. A debut for Boro, and in European football, a dream come true for the kid.

I played his again as sub in his next game as he deserved it. But he was shit, like his stats and never played for me again. But, nobody could take that magical European night away from him.

The day Emnes learned his First Touch Player card was a day I'll never forget. Played Arsenal who battered me, but somehow the game was 1-1. Last minute Adam Johnson whipped in a low ball drilled into the box. Emnes showed his newly aquired First Touch by taking the ball in pure Bergkamp fashion, killing it dead with one foot, then rolling it into the bottom corner to seal a memorable win. I trained him on that Player Card, and with that win it was £1 million well spent.

Then on top of all that PES 2011 has a new revamped BAL. You can lose your life on that mode.

Hahha that's awesome!! :D

Better still on the back of some great performances by Emnes in Boro's debut season in the EPL ( we finished 13th btw) I got a £2 million sponsorship deal by a Dutch Telecom firm with bonus based on Emnes playing 30 games per season. They also had a clause that said If I sold him, they would pull the plug on the whole deal. Needless to say Emnes played every game even when he was shattered and on a Purple/Grey. I was strapped for cash and I couldnt risk losing that amount of money. I then made him Captain so if another team came in for him, one of the big guns, his loyalty lied with Boro. And it did, his loyalty bar to the club shot up when I gave him the armband. It was like Wenger and Fabregas all over again, just on a much lower scale.

Man I cant wait. In Fifa I'm all about starting at the bottom of the English league - is the Championship the lowest league in ML?

With the option file patch yes. To be fair you still have 4 levels, Coca, EPL, Europa and CL. The official licences are a dream. You really feel your in these comps as all the menu's change, all the authentic music, all night games, very realistic and you get bloody butterflies. It just hurts like hell when you get eliminated as your midweek fairytale dream is over. It ups your teams profile though which makes signing players easier.

I pumped most of my team funds into building a better Youth Academy, which meant I had a level 1 Scout. Fuck me he was shit, I had to tell him if a player was good FFS. And unlike a Level 5 Scout (£10mill wage) he took months to even give me his reports on potential transfer targets. And then they werent that accurate. I'm sure my level 1 Scout was a full blown crackhead, he was as much use as glass hammer, I felt like smashing that glass hammer over his fucking head.

Lets be honest though, there isnt huge difference in teams in Fifa due to the lack of player individuality, same goes for buying players, they are only a name. So really, at least in PES every team is unique as is every player. So that makes up for it and some.

Also having the full Coca Cola teams chants throughout the season is brilliant. When you play away from home, you get each teams unique chants throughout the game, it adds so much to the realism. I have a massive collection of Coca Cola team chants, EPL and European. I'll upload them all closer to release. Blackpool has some really funny chants. And I loved setting the chants 'Your not singing anymore' for everytime I scored. Always by a smile on my face that, hearing my teams fans taking the piss, makes the goal all the more sweeter.

Went back to play some PES2010 tonight, had fun, and only reaffirmed my belief that this was a solid base model for something better. 2010 does feel like a stripped down game in many ways, but one that is so much better than 2008/2009 (for me the two worst games in the series). It's taken a fair bit of abuse here today, but it'll always be a game I remember fondly, marking the point when Seabass and co turned their back on the misguided decisions to dumb PES down.

Still, bring on Wednesday already!

Sounds awesome! Glad to see you enjoying it so much and some really nice posts. :)

I been playing FIFA for past couple years, PES5/6 is I think last one I played.... can't remember... but I don't give a fuck about Konami nor EA. No loyalty to neither whatsoever. Don't know why some people would. All I care about is which game is gonna give me a better time and I'm gonna enjoy more. That's what makes sense to me. Not being a fan of either 'company' or game.

And Manager mode/ML wise at least, which is something I REALLY care about, it seems like Konami's game is miles ahead!

I'm gonna give PES a try again this year then. See how I like it.

Last time I played PES, the ML was quite shit tho. It didn't even have proper leagues, there was a Div 1 with 16 teams and a Div 2 with 8 teams lol... and I had to set them up manually and so of course you still couldn't have a proper EPL league with only 16 teams ... and of course all the patching/option file, etc. can't be bothered with anymore... no time.

but this whole loyalty thing/captain thing... THIS is brilliant stuff. THIS is what we need and were hoping for in Fifa's MM. Good for Konami for improving their game. Gonna have to give it another go this time and that's largely thanks to you. ;) though I am very happy with all other aspects of FIFA.

The sponsorship deal with Emnes and Dutch company is crazy! I thought at first you're joking when you said that. Seriously! :P And of course this is all from last year's game!? If the mode was that deep then, wonder how much further improved it is now!

Sounds great Jimmy. Was impressed with it in the short time I spent on pes2010, but never managed to get that deep into it. After reading Nick's impressions for CM and it being so underwhelming PES needs to have the gameplay back, which is looks to have.

I didn't mind PES2010, it was just the lack of transition animations made it feel so "off" for me. They have now fixed that and improved a whole lot more. :D

I don't think that you can change clubs.

Jimmy,
I like the way you genuinely love PES2010 and i respect your opinion.
To me (just like the previous games) it was a broken game. No matter how deep it was (and it was deep), it lost all credibility to me because of the very, very poor animations...individual players don't move like that and that was a fatal flaw for me.
Another flaw for me (but this could be personal, i consider myself a rather crap player) is that either the game is too easy or too difficult. It seemed to me that the CPU teams did not win fair against my team on the two highest levels (but maybe i'm a sore looser).
The last two years FIFA was clearly the better game for me, but i got never hooked by it like PES 3, 4, 5 and 6 (and 6 was not that good). IMO PES5 was the best of the series.

I love everything you mention Jimmy but there I'd one thing that Konami need to have addressed.

AI, AI, AI, AI and AI. I found in every PES since the now legendary PES5 that the AI is too easy and play predetermined too patterns. I was whooping Barcelona. Madrid, AC milan and the real juggernauts too easily with my average team of no namers. I don't mean Ximelez, Castolo etc but the signings that I made like Halil Altintop, Aissati, Vanden Borre, Daimante and the young guns.

Another issue is that I always messed around with the formation till I found the one that worked and I could pretty much stick to it without the CPU pushing me or pressuring me to change. Unless injuries or form arrows pushed my hand.

Also I get annoyed when the CPU decides I'm going to lose a match and that's it. My form arrows were ridiculously bad for the entire team. But I still managed to get 17 shots at goal vs the CPUs 2 and lose 2-0. I love the challenge but it's a cheap tactic.

I miss having to change my formation against Arsenal to counter Henry (back then) or having to watch Zidane or Deco controlling their respective midfields or even those teams that for no apparent reason just seemed to get the better of me. Especially Nuno Gomez who was bloody prolific against me no matter how I tried to mark him out. He would always pop up for a goal.

Feeling exactly the same, although trying so so hard not to get my hopes up too much because every post i've read from jimmy makes pes seem like the best game ever in the world, after trying pes2010 this was just awful. But with all these modes in the ML and what's looking like (finally) a new PES engine - think my head might be turned from FIFA this year :)

Jimmy you should definately PR for Konami you make me want to go try PES again and make me want to love it like the old days but I cant, hoping PES 2011 will change this :)

mate do you have team call names that now in pes2011 we are able to insert? I have managed to extract all call names from pes2 and pactched pes 5 but they are all peter bracley not jon champion

I hope it's possible, too. Not everyone is Alex Ferguson :P

it's not possible
or it was not possible in preview code
don't know if they changed that in final version, but i guess nothing has changed

one more question

any problems in player switching?

Apart from a the two moments I mentioned where I thought the AI's default recipient of the cross was wrong the switching is instant now, you really had to try and force the switching on the beta so it was a relief to see it fixed.

+1.

fifa going downhill and PES going uphill :)

@DarthKebab

Players still hunch over while running? In Beta videos I saw, especially Etho was in letter "C" shape while running. Hope they adjusted that animation!

@ Darth

How much better does the game look graphically compared to the beta? I thought the beta looked good but a little rough around the edges. How much has the review code been polished and does it looks as stunning as PES2010? Are there any nice little touches in the presentation that you noticed?

There is more movement to the running, the players do arch their backs for me which is better than the pole up arse knees up to their chest yoyo ball of last year, I honestly cannot fault any part of the movement this year, it just feels like the most natural football game, you getting the demo on Wed?

Thanks Darth for all of your impressions, really appreciated. Shows why the Evo Web community is so special. With the likes of Darth and Nick Cave spending so much time answering questions over the last few days.

I am looking forward to the Demo on Wednesday.

The beta for me looked quite dark in tone, not sure if this was the same for others, obviously the players look just like 2010 but it has some lovely little touches such as fat Ronaldo using a sarcastic gesture when a team mate did not pass to him and took the shot, players on their knees pleading with the ref for a foul, facial animatioms as well are excellent, seeing a close up of Mikel Arteta grimace then say something to himself made me laugh after he was fouled, you really get some stunning replays which you don't want to skip as it all moves so well.

Gameplay wise compared to the beta as I said, I didn't believe it was possible for it to be as polished as it was, on the beta when control you kind of have to plan ahead your movement as it is not as instant, on this the players keep the ball closer allowing tighter turns and you can feel as if the ball is a ball, there is no invisible barrier keeping the ball close to the player and when you see a nutmeg then you will understand this.

Like I said to Steve at the end of the playtest he just told me to write what I like and I said I would be slaughtered on the forums as there was almost nothing negative, luckily people will be playing on Wednesday though to see for themselves.
