Re: Official Transfers Only - Summer 2006

sorry, i'm like 5 pages off-topic but simeone's coaching job on our team was actually great. further comment here:

most of the racing fans wanted him to stay and gave him a very warm goodbye on the season closer, when it was known that he was leaving after we had our general administrator changed (racing belongs to an investor group that is dealing with the former debt and bankrupcy from past administrations).

he started on the seventh week of our league, grabbing a team that nobody wanted to coach, with a very mediocre squad that was playing like the worst team in the whole league.

by the time he started working we had 1 draw and 5 losses and looked close to relegation. after losing his first 3 matches (for which you can't really blame him, since the team was on a real awful form and he only had days of work with the team), we had 0 wins 1 draw and 8 losses, last on the table by far.

then he got a couple of weeks to train the squad, because of an international friendlies fixture and after that he got the team to play a lot better and ended with 5 wins 3 draws 2 loses.

in a year which started looking like relegation, his job saved our asses at least for another year. he had the guts to start benching veterans that were clearly showing lack of motivation and played many youngsters that not only saved us but also give us hope of a better future. also worth mentioning is that he was a fan our club and his goal when he came here was to play for another year and retire in peace after the end of the season. he was forced to retire and make his debut as a coach under the aforementioned circumstances in the middle of the season and only did that because of honest love to our team.

when pretty much no one would want to retire and start coaching a team that is on the verge of relegation and playing poorly, he stepped up. he took the responsability and the risk of beeing hated by the fans of the team he loves, and for that we will never forget him. :)

p.s.: that's why estudiantes didn't doubt to appoint him as a coach when their former coach burruchaga quit them for independiente.
