Lashley would get killed. He made the correct decision in turning the fight down.
We dont know what Barnett popped positive for. It may not of been steroids.
There are plenty fighters juicing mate. Testing clean a day before or after a fight doesnt mean the fighter isnt juicing. MMA fighters are not randomly tested and know when the test will be. They can cycle on and off drugs to beat the test.
According to a press release put out by the California State Athletic Commission, Josh Barnett’s license has been denied due to his June 25th drug test coming back positive for 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one, an anabolic steroid. CSAC states that they learned of the results on July 21st and immediately denied a license for Barnett and informed the promoter. “Barnett’s test was observed in the presence of a CSAC representative and the sample was sent to the World Anti-doping Agency test facility at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on June 25th for processing. CSAC was notified of the results yesterday,” the press release states.
Luis Farias, Communications Director at the Department of Consumer Affairs (which oversees the CSAC) confirmed reports that the Commission is still looking at a second sample at the fighter’s request. When asked how long it would take to get the results, Farias said “I am ascertaining this as we speak.” Although the first sample is enough to deny a license, Farias declined to comment on what would happen if the second sample was clean. “I’m not going to entertain any hypothetical situations,” Farias said. “We’ll see what happens and then go from there.”
Barnett’s management did not immediately respond to phone message requests for comment.
In a matter of days Affliction Entertainment's "Trilogy" event when from promising the top heavyweight fight in mixed martial arts to being cancelled outright, multiple sources confirmed to SI.com Friday morning.
Affliction Entertainment vice president Tom Atencio began making calls with the news Friday morning to fighters scheduled to appear on the Aug. 1 card, SI.com has learned.
The abrupt change comes in the wake of 31-year-old Josh Barnett testing positive for banned substances following a California State Athletic Commission pre-fight drug test.
Fucking Barnett has got Affliction 3 cancelled and now they have folded
The good thing is though is that there are alot of free agents for the UFC to snap up now including Fedor
Oh and Ortiz and White have made up and he may be back soon as well
Sources close to the fighter have informed FiveKnuckles.com that Strikeforce were in talks with Affliction, M-1 Global and Golden Boy promotions on a long term deal with Emelianenko with in the last couple of days. The promotion reportedly offered the former Pride champion between 500,000 and 700,000 per fight, a non-exclusive contract, guaranteed exposure on CBS shows and a cut of any PPV event he was a part of. Emelianenko would certainly be able to get maximum mainstream U.S. exposure via CBS and Showtime which could lead possible big money endorsement deals and he'd also get to enjoy the freedoms associated with Strikeforce's non-exclusive contracts. This scenario is considered a strong possibility if Emelianenko is indeed a free agent according to inside sources.
Rumors are flying right now, so it's difficult to know exactly how all of this will play out. Sources have stated that Emelianenko's management contract allows him to brake his management contract if he's not put into a certain number of fights each year, and that may also be a possibility how unlikely it seems given his strong relationship to Vadim Finklestein and the rest of his management team at M-1.
Emelianenko is currently en route to California, according to M-1 officials, and will be making a statement regarding the situation by soon after his arrival, which should shed more light on the situation.
We'll have that for you as soon as it becomes available.
Mixfight.ru, the official Russian-language site of M-1Global.com, was able to reach M-1 Global President and Co-Owner Vadim Finkelchtein by phone soon after the cancellation of “Trilogy.”
Finkelchtein issued his first official comments regarding the matter to Mixfight.ru in Russian. A translated version of Finkelchtein comments to Mixfight.ru is now available.
During the brief conversation with Mixfight.ru, Finkelchtein explained Affliction’s logic behind canceling the entire event.
“Affliction is asserting that all the steps that have transpired had to take place because of the disruption caused in the presentation of their PPV,” he began to explain. “The fact is that according to American laws, if you advertise the showing of an event on a paid television channel, you are obligated to deliver what has been advertised.
“In other countries, the marketing was centered around Fedor. However, in the U.S. the marketing of the fight was clearly built around both Fedor and Josh Barnett. Since Barnett was unable to compete as advertised, Affliction was concerned about legal issues.”
In a bit of a surprise, Affliction announced a reconciliation with the UFC on Friday and confirmed that its involvement in MMA will now be limited to that as a sponsor. Finkelchtein was asked if M-1 will continue to work with Affliction.
“This question remains open,” he answered. “Negotiations are currently taking place as we speak. With this cancellation they not only let us down but all the fighters and the MMA fans all over the world as well.”
One of the most pressing questions coming from the cancellation is what will be the fate of former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko. In an official statement over the weekend, M-1 Global promised fight fans that Emelianenko will return to active competition as soon as possible.
“We are now with Fedor in the U.S. and we hope to make a decision about his next fight within the next few days,” Finkelchtein stated. “There are many business meetings and negotiations planned with all the major promotions. We will explore the possibility of Fedor fighting Barnett and will even look into whether the fight can take place as soon as August (since Barnett has not been suspended).”
Finkelchtein also believes that the cancellation of “Trilogy” could be used as an opportunity to jump start stagnant negotiations to bring Fedor to the UFC.
“This is the moment of truth that the UFC has talked about. Fedor and I are here in the States. If they want to come out and fly here, we are ready to conduct negotiations. Of course it still doesn’t imply we are ready to accept any conditions they’ll throw at us. We want to talk to the UFC about having Fedor compete against some of their fighters, but only within the framework of co-promotional efforts with M-1 Global.”
He ended the conversation by pledging to keep the MMA public up-to-date in regards to Fedor and M-1’s next move via Mixfight.ru and M-1Global.com..

It’s 6:45 AM in Los Angeles… and M-1 just sent out a notice for the media to attend the press conference in Anaheim that will take place in 6 hours. So in a timespan of six hours, they are going to have the media sign up for credentials either for live attendance or for a conference call on the phone. I know…
At the hastily-arranged press conference will be Fedor, Vadim Finkelchtein, and Gary “Jerry” Millen. Here’s how the press conference is being described as:
Former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko will address the media for the first time since Affliction’s decision last week to cancel “Trilogy.” Fedor will discuss his reaction to the news while also talking about his potential future options. Additionally, the press conference will also include a Q&A session with reporters.
Fedor press conference today in Anaheim
Fedor Emelianenko has just announced that he will be headlining the upcoming mixed martial arts video game being produced by EA Sports.
The announcement came during his press conference being held in California this afternoon.
Also announced for the upcoming video game entitled “EA Sports MMA” were Gegard Mousasi and Renato “Babalu” Sobral.
Other fighters rumored to be taking part in the game are Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, Bobby Lashley and Nick Diaz.
“EA Sports MMA” will be released sometime in 2010 for both the Playstation 3 and XBox 360 consoles.
Previously the UFC had stated that anyone involved in the anticipated video game would not be allowed to fight under their banner.
Stay tuned to Five Ounces as we continue to keep you up to date on this breaking story.
The UFC and ESPN have reportedly reached an agreement to air UFC events on ESPN in the UK beginning with UFC 101 on August 8, The Sun is reporting.
The UFC previously partnered with Setanta for its UK broadcasts, but the company’s collapse in June left the UFC scrambling to find a new broadcast partner. A temporary deal was reached to air UFC 100 on Sky and UFC.com earlier this month, and it now appears a more-permanent solution has been secured.
ESPN’s UK channel launches on August 3, with UFC 101, headlined by BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian and Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin, likely to be one of the first major events broadcast on the network.
A deal between the UFC and ESPN to air UFC events on ABC in the United States is also rumored to be in the works, but has not yet been confirmed.
The UFC is expected to announce the broadcast developments at its Friday press conference.
It appears as though Mixed Martial Arts fans planning to celebrate with a bit o’ bubbly on July 31st will need to keep their bottles on ice a little longer.
Earlier this week, the Los Angeles Times reported a contract between the UFC and top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko was likely to be announced this upcoming Friday at an already-scheduled press conference. However, the LA Times’ Lance Pugmire has since retracted his earlier statement and explained that, while discussions between both sides remain ongoing, no finalized deal is expected to be in place by July 31st.
Echoing his sentiments, M-1 Global CFO Joost Raimond has confirmed Emelianenko’s camp and the UFC are currently in the process of negotiating with each other but nothing official has been agreed upon.
- The UFC offered Fedor a 6 fight, 30 million dollar contract. That's 5 mil a fight
- The UFC offered Fedor an immediate title shot
- Lesnar/Fedor would be the biggest PPV in MMA history (we assume), and the UFC offered M-1 Global a cut of the PPV on top of Fedor's purse.
- Fedor was free to wear as many M-1 logoed items as he wished.
- The UFC also relented on allowing Fedor to compete in combat sambo.
Apparently, for good or bad, M-1 refuses to sign a deal unless the UFC agrees to co-promote.
Apparently what the UFC have offered Fedor but negotiations have fallen through.

In the days since the fall of Affliction late last week, there has been a plethora of information, and misinformation, reported. Enough misinformation, in fact, that M-1 Global president Vadim Finkelchtein felt the need to issue a public statement regarding the reports.
One of the hottest topics has been the report emanating from the Carmichael Dave radio show, claiming knowledge of the UFC’s offer to Fedor Emelianenko. The report outlined the UFC’s offer as:
- A 6-fight, $30 million contract
- An immediate title shot at UFC 103 against Brock Lesnar
- A cut of the UFC 103 pay-per-view on top of Fedor's purse
- The ability for Fedor to wear as many M-1 logoed items as he wished
- The ability for Fedor to compete in combat Sambo
Specifically addressing the Carmichael Dave information, Finkelchtein’s statement, in its entirety, reads:
"There have been recent reports stating that talk between M-1 Global and the UFC regarding Fedor fighting in the UFC have ended. Like some of the other reports that have surfaced, this is incorrect.
"It is unfortunate that so much incorrect information has been leaked to the public. It is M-1's preference not to negotiate in public and we are unsure why people claim that Fedor and M-1 turned down a six fight, $30 million contract to fight in the UFC when no such offer was ever made.
"Even though Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White did not meet with Fedor in person on Tuesday, they were represented over the phone. Outside of representatives of the UFC and M-1, no other company was represented during our negotiations. Since we did not go to the media with details of the meeting and only responded to the erroneous reports, we are unsure how these reports started.
"It's unfortunate because these type of tactics will not help ensure that M-1's talks with the UFC are fruitful. M-1 Global is still interested in continuing to negotiate with the UFC and while we are fielding offers from other major promotions, nothing has been decided. It is our hope that the UFC will remain in active dialogue with us as we try to find ways for us to work together. All we are asking is that there is give-and-take in the negotiations and that they are not one-sided."
New details have emerged from out special contributor Jonathan Snowden’s effort to get to the bottom of the Fedor-UFC negotiations.
“The actual guarantee offered Fedor was less than $2 million. The other money would only come into play if the PPV’s did extremely well,” Snowden said. “Fedor was not offered a $5 million guarantee. It is also important for the entire Russian crew to have a chance to help grow the sport there. Although Fedor can make more money now in the UFC than he likely can elsewhere, it wouldn’t allow an opportunity to expand Russian MMA.”
It’s unfortunate that a Fedor and Brock Lesnar fight is looking further and further away. Fans online were already speculating about what would have been the ultimate battle of skill versus size.
“When I asked Brock about Fedor at the Randy Couture fight, he got very angry,” Snowden said. “He wasn’t interested in Fedor. Now he is making noises about fighting the Russian. I think Brock sees the potential box office appeal.”
EDIT: New information just came in from Jon Snowden regarding more of the particulars:
-Offer was only for three fights, not six as originally reported.
-The guarantee per fight was *less* than Fedor’s contract with Affliction.
It's BS and people at the UFC put out that story to MMA websites etc to try and make Fedor and M-1 look bad.
Fedor and M-1 have confirmed that this $30m contract was not offered

Dana White said during the UFC press conference today that he offered Fedor Emelianenko everything he could and Fedor still turned the deal down. White described the offer as "the most amazing deal" but added that Fedor's camp turned it down because UFC wouldn't agree to co-promote with M-1.
"How are they going to help us co-promote?" White said. "They're going to help us? That [expletive] might work in Russia (but) not here."
White added that if M-1 dropped the co-promotion requirement, a deal would be done.
"We did everything possible for this deal," White said. "We didn't hold back. It's crazy to turn down a deal like this."
"I was so confident we were going to get this done. I went in (to the negotiations) with the mindset that we were going to get this done."
"I'm ready to make a deal. If they want to make a deal, they can call me right now."
"This is going to happen," White said he told UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta. "It's going to happen today. We're going to make this thing happen."
"I was f---ing miserable, miserable…because we couldn't make this deal. I was so confident we were going to get this done because we were willing to do it. We were willing to make a deal at almost any cost. People from other countries just don't walk in and jump in business with the Fertitta brothers. There has to be full background checks and all kinds of crazy sh-t. It doesn't work that way. It's impossible; it will never happen."
"He got offered a f---ing assload of money. A ton of money, everything he wanted. He can go fight in sambo every f---ing Thursday night if he wants to. He can do everything he wanted to. We showed them nothing but respect. It's insanity to turn down a deal like this. To turn down a deal like this, you don't care about proving you're the best in the world. You don't want to fight the best in the world. You don't care about money. How do you deal with something like that?"
Fedor needs to step up, awesome fighter but it looks like he is ducking this ufc move, in turn will make him look like a bottle job. And for the guy that was ko'd in 3 seconds, I would have lasted longer than that.
Bottle job? His never ducked anyone. His beaten everyone there is to beat. I fail to understand how Fedor the #1 HW in the world has a point to prove and must fight Brock Lesnar - a guy who has had 4 fights and lost 1 to Frank Mir. Surely Brock Lenar needs to fight Fedor and not the other way round.
Brock does need to win a lot more fights before he can be seen as a great fighter and a champ to remember. But Fedor's last fight against anyone remotely in their prime was crocop in 2005. Who has he fought since then that you can say was at the best of their career?
If UFC did offer them everything they could and Fedor still said no then I'd class that a 'ducking'. If the reasoning is he thinks he can beat the shit out of Brock easily then why not say yes and get some easy money?
You'd think if he wants M1 to be seen as THE place to be then going to ufc beating brock and showing the world M1 has the absolute best there is would be right up there on his list of things to do.
I'd say he's ducked this one as he knows that if Brock won he stands to lose more than Brock does. Brock loses and he can put it down to inexperience, Fedor losing means he loses his whole 'best of the best' deal, especially worse when the opponent is a 4-1 nobody.
It's official: Fedor Emelianenko will not be fighting in the UFC anytime soon. Instead, the best heavyweight MMA fighter in the world has signed what is being called "a historic, multi-fight agreement that will see him headline mega-events co-promoted by world championship promotions Strikeforce and M-1 Global." Strikeforce announced the signing via press release on Monday.
"I am looking forward to going back to work and fighting at the highest level," Emelianenko said. "Strikeforce is a top fight promotion that houses some of the greatest fighters in the world. I am prepared to fight any of them."
The press release did not specify what the terms of contract were; it simply stated that Emelianenko will make his debut this fall on Showtime. Strikeforce director of communications, Mike Afromowitz, told FanHouse that the organization is planning on holding a press conference in the near future to announce further details.
Apparently, Strikeforce was able to meet the demands of Emelianenko's promotion, M-1 Global, which was something UFC president Dana White refused to do. The major sticking point between Emelianenko's camp and the UFC was that the UFC refused to co-promote events with the Russian-based group.
"There's no compromise on co-promotion," White said on Friday. "Why the hell would I let anyone come in and co-promote. The Fertittas risked all their money. All the things we did in busting our ass in the 10 years we've been in this business, and these guys are going to walk in and say, 'We're going to be in business with you guys'?"
No word on who Emelianenko will be facing first or the exact date of his Strikeforce debut.
Afromowitz informed FanHouse that only cards in which Emelianenko fights on will be billed as a co-promotion between both organizations.
"I am very happy and excited about the upcoming collaboration with Strikeforce," said Vadim Finkelchtein, President of M-1 Global. "We are very pleased that we found a reliable partner and I feel that Strikeforce and M-1 can support each other on many things. This will create big opportunities for both parties to test their fighters against worthy opponents."
Needless to say, this is a major coup for Strikeforce and Showtime. Once the negotiations between the UFC and M-1 Global broke down, many believed that it was only a matter of time before Strikeforce would offer Emelianenko a deal.
"We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with M-1 Global and Fedor," said Strikeforce Founder and CEO Scott Coker. "Fedor has been the reigning king of MMA's heavyweight division for quite some time now so being able to work with M-1 and Fedor will substantially increase the level of competition amongst the athletes in this weight class."
