Re: XBox 360 - Official Thread

Okay, this is confusing the hell out of me now (would have posted this earlier, damn Christmas).

This morning I saw this article, and read this:

Team XBox said:
Speaking of resolutions, it is worth clarifying that there appears to be an error in the product page over at Xbox.com. It states that the video output settings for the Xbox 360, when using this cable includes 480p, 720p and 1080i. That is incorrect.

They go on to explain that a component HD AV cable goes up to 1080p. I panicked a bit and thought "so I've not got the best possible cable, I should have got the component HD AV cable and then got some kind of component to VGA converter" (seeing as no television equipment in my house is anything LIKE modern enough to be a HDTV). So I read up for a bit on a converter and the cheapest conversion box I could find was $300. Fat chance.

That article then goes on to show you the resolutions the cable will unlock ( highest being 1360x768 ), but doesn't compare this to 720p or 1080i or 1080p or anything. Feeling very confused, not knowing if I was getting the best possible quality (knowing that the I for interlaced isn't really that good, but knowing that I'm missing out on 1080p for progressive, despite PGR3 not supporting it), I left it alone and thought "well, what can you do, you've got it now and you're not forking out $300".

But then later on, I read this article about "progressive scan". One of the "plus points" listed is "no flickering of narrow horizontal patterns". Now this infuriated me, because this is exactly EXACTLY (breathe) why I got the frigging VGA cable. I was sick of playing Pro Evolution on the PS2 and, as the camera zooms around a replay, watching the lines on the pitch get reduced to flickering white spikey jaggy crap.

And yet in PGR3, on the highest resolution (or on any resolution), when I pass the bridge in one of the London races, the things holding it up (and the rails) have that "flickering of narrow horizontal patterns" effect.

Finally, just before I went to bed (I don't know how I fit it all in), I discovered that the optical-out audio cable included with the XBOX 360 video-out cables is referred to as an "SPDIF" output. I knew I'd heard the name before and low and behold, in my volume control on the PC, I have an "SPDIF-IN" slider. However, the SPDIF connection on my motherboard isn't a TOSLINK connection (the port at the end of the optical-out cable), but one built onto the motherboard for use with a CD-DIGITAL cable, such as this one.

So, your homework is:

A) Why, when I have bought a VGA cable capable of doing 1360x768, are narrow horizontal patterns reduced to flashing flickering jaggies, such as railings and even lines on the cars such as where the doors open and close?

B) What can I possibly do to stop said jagginess on a 21" monitor capable of 1800x1440 with BNC connections and a VGA connection?

C) Does BNC have anything at all to do with the HD AV component connections, which I believe are referred to as Y, Pb, Pr? If not, can I somehow connect them (via conversions or God knows what)?

D) Is there any kind of converter to convert a TOSLINK connection into a motherboard one?

(God I hope Babs visits this topic, I may just be stuffed otherwise :()

Where does it say that? Cuz if thats true, then I have to agree when you say that the VGA cable isnt the best option.
But then again, how many people here have a good HD tv, let alone one that shows in 1080p?

Jaggies and all that might annoy you but its only a minor thing. I'm completely happy with the VGA cable right now. Besides, do you even have a 1920x1080 resolution monitor?

I plan on sticking with what I have until our family decide to get a 1080p TV from which point, I'll just use the component cables that came with the console.

Curiously, the VGA cable does not unlock the 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution or any resolution near the WUXGA standard, leading us to believe that when the Xbox 360 outputs 1080i using the HD component cable, it only does the old 540p-upconvert-to-1080i trick.

I'm assuming that means the component HD AV cable unlocks the 1080p mode. And you may be able to cope with the jaggies but I'VE HAD ENOUGH DAMN IT!! :ram:

Am I reading what you're reading cuz all I get out of that article is that BOTH cables only go up to 1080i.

Why would they mention 1080p at all if it wasn't achievable with something? Although I did read it and think "surely if it's hard to get up to 1080i it can't do 1080p"... Hm, who knows.

Cuz it IS achievable with something but the Xbox 360 isnt one of those things.

In a word no. As the others have said you need either a Memory Card or a HDD to get onto LIVE with your 360.

I am loving Call Of Duty 2 which I got yesterday, it feels like I am part of the war :)

Re: XBox 360 - Official Thread

Re: XBox 360 - Official Thread

Had the system for just over a week now. Loving it, no problems with freezing/crashing. Impressed with NFS/MW and COD2 is a great game, the AI of the enemy is amazing.

Anyway, gamertag is the7wolf is anybody wants ot add me and will look to play some you guys online soon. I also have Halo 2 for the original XBox playing on it (a good graphics boost when played on the 360) and irnocally enough, I've probably spent more time playing that!

I agree with COD2. I feel bad when one of my collegues get shyot and it feels like a war. I start to think how horrible the war was and how I can't just press continue when I'm shot like I can in this game.

I am near the end I finished D-Dxay stage but sending my console back this week because I have to turn it on then off then on a few times to get it to power on and sometimes I get 2 red lights. The main problem is at times it says disc unreadable insert correct disc and twice i finished staged on COD2 and this came up and didn't save :(.
