Microsoft Xbox 360

Bought a VGA cable last night and still no picture (in fact turning on the 360 with the VGA cable plugged in turned off my TV!) so waiting until Gamestop get a pre-owned 360 in Mon/Tue hopefully :)

People in the UK. Don't forget the sale of goods act. My second treesiddy messed up after 13 months and it's the retailer that's responsible not the manufacturer. A product has to last a reasonable amount of time and 13 months for a games console costing £250 is not reasonable.

Mine was from PC World and while initially they hid behind the manufacturer's guarantee, after I spoke to consumer direct and sent a couple of recorded delivery letters (templated) to PC World they agreed to take back the console. I ended up paying an extra tenner and getting a brand new elite.

Fight the power, people!

Always deal with where you bought your stuff from. The manufacturer's guarantee is always seperate to your "statutory rights".

Watchdog out.

I had to argue when taking my broken xbox back. When i asked about swapping the new one they had just handed to me for a PS3 they tried to say to me that they'd have to take the new 360 in as a 2nd hand trade and id have to pay the difference.

But i argued 'Well ive yet to have a new console last for longer than 6 months, and this one lasted 2 days so i want to return it for a full refund'

After some umming and erring the manager saw it my way and offered me a replacement elite or a PS3 (and i would trade my 360 games in to pay the little extra)

I've no idea if i was allowed to do demand that though - I have a friend who tried the same a G@ME and they told him to sod off basically

Not sure if I'm going to have any problems next week when I take my Premium back, but so far I'm loving it in Sweden, very strong consumer rights, for example by law you have the right to return anything you buy within 30 days for a full refund no matter the reason, already returned a couple of things that I'd bought and opened and tried and changed my mind on, no problems at all, explained what the issue was and got my money back, in England you get treated like a criminal for having the audacity to take a pair of shoes back where the sole fell off after 2 days, and in Singapore, forget about it, even try asking for a refund and people look at you as if you just squatted down and shat on the shop floor!

I bought a Geforce 9800 from an online store here, tried it for a few days, was pissed off that Nvidia butchered TV out in Clone mode, Emailed the company and asked if I can exchange the card for a Radeon 4870, reply, no problem, just mail the card back, pay the difference between the two cards and they'll send me the 4870, nice :)

That's great Placebo, wish it was more like that here, thing is most people are too emabarrassed to ask for their money back in most cases anyway so for people who do ask it makes it harder for them.

I just rang the retailer I bought my 360 from and they said they'll exchange it for a brand new one, no problem as I only had it 3 months before the problems started. Only thing is I'm gonna lose everything off my HDD cos I think it's that that has fucked up.

Reminds me of when I went to buy Buzz! Quiz TV for the PS3 - they didn't have it out at GAME, you had to ask if they had it in stock, so the fella goes out to the back, comes back with it and says "£50 please". Being a stupid tosser, I just paid for it and said to the missus "I made him go out to the back for it, you can't then not buy it". :|

The missus was practically dragging me back into the shop but I said "it will be the same everywhere else". I went to Gamestation just opposite, to prove my point, and they were selling it for £45.

I know I should have gone back there and then but I said "no, it's only a fiver, I'd feel like a pillock" - so she convinced me to walk down to Blockbusters, despite my argument of "no way will it be cheaper there, no way", and they were selling it for £40 (the same as the internet sellers).

I went back to GAME and said "do you realise you're selling it for £10 more than Blockbuster?" and he just said "yeah but we're not going to tell you that are we?" Lesson learnt.

I called the store today on the off chance to see if they had any pre-owned premiums in stock, they didn't but they have brand new Elites, they're gonna buy back the broken pre-owned premium from me for what I paid for it 3 months ago and then give me a brand new Elite (with one game) for only 1500kr (£126) more ;)

Got my Elite, no problems, no quibbles, no examining every piece of the Premium bundle in full detail to check for specks of dust like they would in England, in fact they didn't even open the box, took it off me, asked me which free game I wanted, took 1404Kr from me and gave me the Elite, that's my kind of customer service :)

I like it, I think they're a tiny bit more sophisticated than a Mii. Not sure about the actual interface but they've kept the guide button menu basically the same, so that's a good thing.

To me it just looks to confusing, I really prefer the current one because it's easy to navigate and it simply does its job. I just hope the screen where you can see your friends list and join in their games wont be to bad because that's a huge thing for me on the Xbox.

OK, this is hard to run down exactly, because there's a Live Weekend going on right now, which means you can play online for free on Xbox Live. But reader Draco, a Silver level gamer, says that he's been playing cross-platform multiplayer games for free since Wednesday night, which precedes the Live Weekend (which started at midnight Friday.) I checked his Gamercard and, yeah, he played Shadowrun online on Thursday.

It seems that ending the gold/silver distinction in Games for Windows Live (effectively making it free) might have had the same effect for those who game on titles that are both PC and 360. A commenter on Xbox Live forums found that Shadowrun online play was free, for example. Reader Draco, who spotted this, says it works for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition and Universe at War: Earth Assault, too.

We'll have to check back after the weekend ends. But bigger picture, could this — don't get your hopes up, but it's gotta be on everyone's mind — mean that Xbox Live may eventually convert to a free model for all multiplayer gaming too?

I very much doubt it, if they've got people paying for it now, why would they stop? Seems a bad business decision to me.

Well yeah it would be great for us lot, but bad for MS, so I can't see them doing it.

Over the weekend we posted a rumor about Xbox Live's second class citizens having access to online play on select titles. It's not a rumor anymore, as Microsoft has confirmed that Silver level Live members can indeed have online visitation rights with their Xbox 360 buddies and not just on the weekends. It's all part of an unannounced promotion, we learned.

In tandem with the announcement that MS was "taking off the Gold-only restriction for multiplayer gaming over Games for Windows LIVE," cross platform games (Xbox 360/PC) will be free for all for a limited time, according to a Microsoft spokesperson. Get crackin' online gamers. It won't last long, they say.

i got my 360 back from rrod and it was a refurb... in the interim i borrowed my buddies which he bought last xmas, it was SO much quieter then mine... i hate mine, LOL

He's showing that some nobs have modded their joypads so they have a rapid fire button - so in a game like COD4 they can fire o0ff 30 bullets in 2 seconds while you'd only get 1 shot off.

"Opus" Chip Now Shipping In Repaired 360s?

This is going off the testament of a single man on the internet, so it’s far from confirmed, but it’s convincing enough to warrant a closer look: seems Microsoft’s long-rumoured “Opus” chipsets may have begun shipping. Featuring a 65nm CPU and 90nm GPU, it’s believed the Opus is a stop-gap chipset, to be used in repaired/refurbished consoles (while the Valhalla chip is used in new consoles). The chip pictured comes from a repaired unit, so at least that part of the story checks out. What’s this all mean? It means that, if true, when your 360 RRoDs and you get it repaired, when you get it back, it’ll (hopefully) be a lot less likely to do it again
