I've done it before (twice) when mine was getting dirty disc errors playing brand new games, no way was I going to keep either of them when I'd be in the middle of a game of Forza and then it would just quit out saying "the disc is dirty". I just told them it had the RROD, all they did was lift the 360 out of the box, took the faceplate off and checked for the warranty seal, made sure everything needed was in the box and then swapped it for a new one.
