Microsoft Xbox 360

Jericho demo now available

The demo for Clive Barker's Jericho is now available on PC, Xbox Live and PSN. We've been itching to try this game since it surprised us back at E3. The videos we've seen since then have stayed pretty impressive and gore filled. Doesn't look like Codemasters is going to pull any punches regarding the gore either. Despite yesterday's report about Jericho's non-rating in Germany, Codemasters is sticking to their guns and won't edit the game. The game is rated M in the States.

As for the demo, the first thing anybody who has played The Darkness will notice is the main menu screen looks very, very familiar. It's also worth watching the "Introduction to Jericho" because it gives all the exposition so that the actual demo is pure gameplay -- be warned though, the voiceover guy is incredibly annoying. Although there are seven members of the Jericho squad, you'll only play as three in the demo. Controls are intuitive for anyone that's played an FPS and switching between bodies works really well. The combat takes a little getting used to, but certainly a demo worth checking out.

Xbox 360 Core Discontinued

GameStop should just go ahead and put our tips email in their distribution list, because as soon as something interesting pops up on their POS system, we get a good four or five emails regarding it. The latest? Apparently an email has come down informing store managers to pull down any signage regarding the Xbox 360 core system, because once their current stock is gone there isn't going to be anymore. Seems like stores are preparing for the rumored new Core system, that comes with the 256MB memory card and wireless controllers. There are rumors upon rumors, but this one rings true.

65nm Xbox360's spotted out in the Wild

A user on the Ars Techica and official Xbox forums noticed major design differences with his new Xbox360, differences that seem to indicate the fabled 65nm chip is now out in the wild. Perhaps this will resolve the overheating issue that has resulted in so many issues over the past couple of years. Combined with HDMI becoming standard on new Premium 360's will this be enough to make you think about upgrading?

The noise of the machine is down to the DVD drive spinning at 12x speed, hence why backwards compat games are quieter as they are spinning at 4x. They would have to include a quieter DVD drive for it to be significantly easier on the ear.

Anyone tried the Clive Barker: Jericho demo? It wasn't on the Singapore marketplace so I went to download it from the UK market place and got a message saying "this product is not available in your region" or something similar and it wouldn't let me download it, so now there's region protection in demos? That sucks :(

So do mate. Yea its sucks

Okay, my third 360 is on the blink. First one was banned without being modded, second one started saying discs were unreadable and quitting to the dashboard, third one is crunching discs (honest to God you should hear the noises) and now every 2nd/3rd time I turn it on the screen is covered in rainbow-coloured flashing lines, with the screen jumping on occasion.

So, what do I do? I'm reliably informed that if I take it to Tesco (even though it's a replacement from Microsoft and I have no receipt) they won't ask for a receipt and I'll get an exchange. I'm thinking of asking to exchange it for an Elite and paying an extra however-much-quid, even though I don't need one - I just need something more bloody reliable. This is getting ridiculous.

What options do I have?

I feel for ya mate I just got mines back not long ago.

I'd phone MS a mate of mines got his turned around in a week flat, they are on top of things now. Complain politely but be pursue it. They will give you a free game or a wireless headset or something. You could always chance your arm with the tesco idea, they wont let you take an elite though im almost certain of that, even if you paid the difference.

Look at the back of the Xbox 360 packaging to find the lot #.

Lot #0723 or higher includes the new heatsinks.

Lot #0727 or higher includes the new heatsinks and the new quieter DVD drives.

Lot #0734 or higher includes the new heatsinks, the new DVD drive and the 65nm chips

For those who don't know, these new chips run cooler and quieter, so there will be less noise and overheating problems.

I have confirmed that the 65nm chips can be found in Premium, Elite, and Halo themed consoles. Core consoles are unconfirmed.

Hey ash, i'm planning on getting an lcd monitor for my 360, but I'm not sure which monitors have the right resolutions to keep my picture normal and not stretched. My budget is 200 pounds. The price for: http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/Acer_AL2216W_22_inch_LCD_ET.E16WE.008/version-1.asp is great but it seems the supported resolutions (http://hardware.teamxbox.com/reviews/xbox-360/40/Xbox-360-VGA-HD-AV-Cable/p1/) only match 1280x1024 which I assume is stretched. Do you have any alternatives or know if it will be stretched?

thanks..

Well, the 360 has finally come to life for me. Skate and FIFA 08 are incredible NEXT-GEN experiences and my bro is bringing Halo 3 over for some multiplayer fun tomorrow. COD4 and PGR4 to come too. Let the good times roll!

What about import tax? I usually get my PS3 games imported from VideoGamesPlus and not had any probs with import tax from there.

I get mine shipped by normal airmail and sometimes EMS Speedpost and I never get taxed. Only been taxed when using UPS.

Argh, it's been on HotUKDeals and now there's no stock :( That's what I get for being indecisive :(

Got my Xbox live messenger kit today, got the keyboard working but couldn't get the headeset working yet, shame cos I plan to leave abusive messages to everyone on my list who're playing Fifa ;)

World in Conflict for Xbox 360 pushed into 2008

Sierra has confirmed that the Xbox 360 port of Cold War era real-time strategy game World in Conflict won't surface until sometime in 2008. The game, which is currently available for the PC, was originally planned for release on the console this November. The jury is wide open to speculation as to the reason for the date change, though Sierra has offered no official reason for the delay.

Interestingly, the shift follows last month's PC ship date announcement, which if you'll recall completely ignored the existence of the Xbox 360 alternative, though when pressed Sierra did tell us that the game "is still scheduled for this year," information that we know to be erroneous. Still, the PC version has been garnering impressive reviews so far, so we continue to hold out hope that Sierra's internal studio Swordfish, which is handling the console port, will deliver the goods someday.

Sales show UK still likes GTA more than Halo

Although Halo 3 took the top spot in the UK charts for sales, according to Chart Track, GTA: San Andreas was still the fastest-selling game in UK history. We're sure the Master Chief is utterly devastated. GI.biz reports Xbox 360 sales doubled in the UK due to Halo's release. FIFA '08, Europe's pseudo-Madden, released over there as well last week and entered the charts at number two. Another interesting bit is that Forza Motorsport 2 saw strong sales from the Halo 3 release, jumping 22 places on the charts. Apparently Halo is helping sell Xbox 360s and games. Only a couple more weeks before the NPD gives the North American numbers for September.

This Wednesday: Tetris Splash dives into XBLA

Here's a fun game to play: try to add up the total amount you've spent on Tetris games in your lifetime and don't forget about that $5 iPod version either. We'll give you a minute ...

... done? Good. So we understand why some of you may have been hesitant to drop $30 on the budget-priced Tetris Evolutions when it came out for the 360 earlier this year. If you held out, your reward is the just announced (but long known about) Tetris Splash, an XBLA version of the classic block-dropper featuring multiplayer support for up to 6 players. Oh, and a virtual fish tank. For 800 Microsoft Points ($10), we just may be able to justify yet another Tetris purchase. Maybe ...
