New update stops soon to be released homebrew hack!

On Tuesday, Microsoft has released an Xbox 360 software update that overwrites the first stage bootloader of the system. Although there have been numerous software updates for Microsoft's gaming console in the past, this is the first one to overwrite the vital boot block. Any failure while updating this will break the Xbox 360 beyond repair. Statistics from other systems have shown that about one in a thousand bootloader updates goes wrong, and unless Microsoft has a novel solution to this problem, this puts tens of thousands of Xboxes at risk.

It seems that this update is being done to fix a vulnerability already known to the Free60 Project. This vulnerability has been successfully exploited to run arbitrary code, and a complete end user compatible hack has been in development for some time and is planned to be released on free60.org shortly. It will allow users to take back control of their Xboxes and run arbitrary code like homebrew applications or Linux right after turning on the console and without the need of a modchip, finally opening up the Xbox 360 to a level of hacking as the original Xbox.

Because of the dangerousness of the update and the homebrew lockout, the Free60 Project advises all Xbox 360 users to not update their systems to the latest software version. The Project website at http://free60.org/ will provide the latest information on this ongoing topic, including the final hack software.

Free60 (www.free60.org) is a project that aims to enable Xbox 360 users to run homebrew applications and operating systems like Linux on their consoles. The effort is headed by Felix Domke and Michael Steil, who have a background in dbox2, Xbox and GameCube hacking, and who have spoken at various conferences about their findings. Two years ago, Free60 released a hack that allowed arbitrary code execution using a game ("King Kong Hack") as well as an adapted version of Linux, but this possibility has been disabled by Microsoft in subsequent updates of the Xbox 360 software.

Felix and Michael have repeatedly argued that game console manufacturers should open up their platforms to Linux and homebrew, similar to what Sony has done with the PlayStation 3.

Looks like we have an execution date for the Xbox 360 Pro model, with this shot from a Meijer catalogue due on August 30 indicating the 360 Elite is in line for a Pro-sized price cut.

You'll remember, of course, that the origins of this rumour - Ars Technica's ever-reliable Microsoft mole - are that the 360 Pro is being phased out, taken off the market entirely, and that the 360 Elite will have its price slashed to that of the Pro to compensate. This will leave only two 360 consoles to choose from: the cheap, hard drive-less Arcade and the 120GB HDD Elite.

'Lo and behold, according to this catalogue, that move looks like it'll take place a couple of weeks from now. So long, 360 Pro model.

Retailers have told Eurogamer that Microsoft will increase the price of the Arcade Xbox 360 bundle to £159.99 (from £129.99) starting 1st September. The five XBLA games will no longer be included in the bundle, either.

ShopTo boss Igor Cipolletta received confirmation from Microsoft this morning, as did a corroborating independent retail chain source.

We're also told that Microsoft will bump the price of individual Xbox 360 accessories by one or two pounds. Our independent retail source said this is being done to counteract the poor pound-to-Euro currency exchange rate.

Furthermore, the email from Microsoft to retailers mentioned only Arcade and Elite bundles. This strengthens rumours that the Premium Xbox 360 bundle is being discontinued.

Where is their head office?! I am going to kick their nuts in!!

That sounds about right, anyone who actually plays their 360 a lot can expect to hit the RROD or more likely the DVD drives failing. I've mentioned before at my previous workplace it was literally 19/20 people who were on at least their second 360 after a year of ownership.

Nintendo said that about the Wii, increasing it's retail price, it never happened at retail, so I dont know if they are swallowing the mark up or not.

I've had my 360 since March 08 and have had no problems with it whatsoever, I must have just been really lucky :).

(Tempting fate by saying this...)

i have had 6 xbox's

first was a premium from game, which failed
replaced with an elite, which failed within 12 months
replaced with another elite which dvd drive didn't work out of the box
replaced with another elite, which failed with E74 within 12 months
another replacement which failed with E74, was sent back to microsoft as it lasted more than 12 months

now on 6th fixed console from microshaft

Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh :(

Both demos are not much different to last years - in fact NHL10 feels identical on the ice.

Getting sick of iterative games. Couple of tweaks each year and lets go again for £40 till next year.

It really DOES just feel like the last one. Floaty cars/buggies, virtually impossible to control on the rally level unless you tip-toe around. No arrow indicators and the scenary is all browns/beige and with all the dust etc its just no fun to keep crashing all the time.

Its 'ok', but didnt blow me away and considering its up against...

GT5, Forza3, Shift, Blur and F1 (Wii) means I wont be bothering.
