Microsoft Xbox 360

Well, I finally updated.

The VGA fixes are great, the colours are ten billion times better now, and the blacks are deeper as well. Makes everything look so much better. The new TVersity (with 360 update) is sending video a lot better than before as well (either by better smoothing techniques or upping the resolution), meaning no more big blocky Lost episodes.

The MSN add-on is crap, it doesn't display the nicknames that you add so instead of having a list that says:

Adam
Chris
Paul

I've got a list that says:

im a playa
tranmere won oh em gee
were da fuck is my keyz lolz

...which just totally pisses me off. Plus they mix them in with your friends list, so you've got names all over the place. I've disabled the feature on mine, I won't be using it (I don't see the point anyway, typing with a pad takes 72 hours per word, getting a USB keyboard costs money and you've got a PC to use your internet connection on, so what do you need a games machine to do your IMs for? Typcial corporate "make it do as many things as it can so we can charge more money for longer" bullshit).

The games look so much better, though. It's a great update.

How do you disable the autosign-in on the Messenger on the dashboard?

Noted, it's free if you're under warranty, you ring the Xbox 360 UK support number (you can find it on Google), they come and pick it up and then you get it back fixed. If you're not under warranty, it's £80.

RuneEdge, to disable the MSN auto sign-in, from the dashboard press the Xbox button, go to your Gamercard at the top, go to "auto sign-in" and there's two options in there, Xbox Live auto sign-in and MSN auto sign-in.

I got 1 red light again this morning when I switched the 360 on... its becoming a bit more frequent now.

anyone download the trusty bell demo off the japanese xbox live servers.

It is pretty nice with a interesting battle system.

Looks like my 360 is on its way out. Two games now have started getting unreadable disc errors and not had one of those errors in over a year since I've had it. Kinda crap that you're lucky to get one year out of a £300 machine. I'll probably put it on eBay and see what I can get for it.

It's disgraceful, they are so poorly put together. In the age of next-gen consoles this kind of shit shouldn't be happening.

I've been okay so far with my original console, but if it breaks then I'll not be getting another one. Funnily enough though, of all the things to go wrong, the horizontal/vertical sensor in it has gone on mine (the component that changes the player 1/2/3/4 segment positioning depending on whether you're lying the unit flat or standing it on it's side) - it keeps changing from one side to the other and if you move the unit slightly it fixes it, for ten seconds. :| Of all the mental errors! At least they're green lights flashing and not red ones!!

It seems to affect games though, sometimes - I played UEFA CL last night and when I had a free-kick, it switched sides and wouldn't let me kick the ball. After thirty seconds it was taken automatically and then everything was alright again...

Put it on eBay, with 46 games and flashed with latest firmware. Anyone wanna make me an offer? ;)

Apparantly wording it as Xtreme and not using the words modded or flashed works. Well, I hope it does anyway! Fingers crossed, money from the 360 will go towards some PS3 games I guess.

I wonder how many people are thinking the same? I actually sold my 360 purely because I was worried it'll become junk in a few months or so.

I know the PS2 was unreliable too, but most did last for at least three years right? I love the 360, but I'm not willing to pay £280 for something that will break down sooner or later :(

It's the exact reason I've sold my 360, I can't be doing with it going all funny and having to just ditch it or sell as spares and repair. Just sold it now for £300 which will do me. Only problem is the only game out that I want for the PS3 is Oblivion, PS3 needs more games :(

So long 360, you were a great friend and served me well. You just started to show too many signs of old age and had to be sent to a nursing home while I went for a younger, more atractive model.

A younger more attractive model which has less games?

Ah well. One day you might regret that

Aye it does have less games, and I much prefer the 360 pad over the PS3. In fact I prefer much of the 360 over the PS3. But I haven't got the money to expect to buy a new 360 every year when it breaks down. Much of the 360 games will be on the PS3 anyway so not a HUGE loss.

Yep..I will rebuy the 360, but only when they finally fix the reliability issues. It's true that there are hardly any games now for the PS3, but most titles will be multiplatform and it does seem to be reliable.

It depends on Microsoft really. I mean, if they were to offer a free exchange service for 360's over a year old, most people won't mind spending on a 1-2 year running machine. If they don't, why would people raise another 280 quid to buy another?

I think I'd think about buying one again when they sort out the reliability, which may come in September when they're rumoured to use the new 65nm CPU's. But until then, I'm happy to turn on a console and not worry about three red lights and it dying.

Maybe an interesting read for you jack. An article suggesting that as the next gen consoles become more advanced, they may become less reliable.

It was bound to happen eventually. They always find ways of seeing this sort of thing.

A bit of a dodgy subject there lads

Agree in part. But just wanted to put this theory across.

Tv-shows are in essence advertisement tools to get viewers to watch their adverts/commercial breaks. Its only when they get released as dvd boxes that they then become "products". Which means youre essentially downloading advertisement disguised as entertainment. Which is freely aired across countries. Which i dont consider dodgy ;)

Back on topic, not that bothered about the banning stuff(havent firmwared it), although maybe they could put more focus on product quality. That would probably be better.

What if you download something with the advertisements editted out?

Good point, although it was recorded with adverts. However technologies like tivo and hdd recorders means most people skip the adverts anyway. Its actually an increasing trend that people will record shows whilst being home so they can watch them later without the adverts by being able to skip them. They arent acting illegal either, and its generally seen as up to the tv companies to come up with new ways to advertise. When looking at american tv shows they are all free to air advertisement tools that are in tv quality (sd/hd/whatever) that are then put online (with or without adverts). I personally consider it different to dvdboxes being ripped with full quality and then downloading them. Which i dont bother with, i usually end up buying the ones i like for the extra quality (5.1 sound, etc). Its a bit of a grey area, but so far i havent heard of any problems with people downloading tv rips. And it think its partly to do with this kind of reasoning that they are in essence advertisment tools. The dvdbox versions are another matter though.
