Manchester United Thread

I'm no Sporting supporter by any means, but that "Olympic diving team" recently outclassed and outplayed Inter Milan in embarassing fashion.

Could your Stars do the same?

We won the Amsterdam tournament that they were also a part of, so maybe the answer is yes.

Not sure we're capable of backlashes these days. It's going to be difficult as it's a cup final for them according to the article. Lets hope they really go for us and we can counter attack.

Whoa! Looks like we're gonna be playing one of our toughest team possible (except Giggs and/or Saha).
The Line up is VDS, Gary, Rio, Vidic, Heinze, Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Richardson, Ronaldo and Rooney.

This could be real fun if Rooney and Ronaldo operate as strikers.

Interesting penalty decision. Given there was no intent at all, he would have only seen the ball a split second, didn't have his arm out and didn't stop a reading player from accomplishing anything, I'm not sure why exactly the ref, who it should be noted, was 30 odd yards away, saw that a penalty. Is that ear piece just a miked version of the home crowd? Cause they were the only ones who thought it was a handball...

Anyway, we've pretty much been shown in the past few games what we are - not good enough. Carrick did nothing today, Richardson being on the pitch certainly helped reading more than united and Rooney is never EVER going to be a lone striker. At least Ronalod played with some heart, and Vidic was impressive. Come to think of it, I believe Reading's only shot in the second half was the penalty. Sigh. Someone told me they played attractive football?

Not really looking forward to the Benfica game now. If you look at their side and the way they pass, it could be a repeat of the Arse game.
Oh well, I'm going to the beach today to look at Japanese women in bikinis so it's not all doom and gloom.

Just seen the clips. I thought the penalty was harsh (accidental)... but we'd have appealed so there you go.
I think some of the Reading players thought it was harsh too. If you watch the Ronaldo goal, one of the Reading defenders is running towards him with his hands behind his back.

We drew 1-1 this weekend. Since the start of the season we've had 4 red cards already, as much as the whole 05-06 season. We're playing shit. Our coach is shit. :(:(:(

We need to beat you for two reasons

1. the 3 points will be great for confidence.
2. it will keep Mauras quiet about English never beating Portuguese :)

1. We need exactly the same.
2. Not if Porto beats Arsenal :D

Anyway, i'm not at all confident going into this game. Rui Costa has been injured and is not certain to play. Nuno Assis, his replacement, has been playing well but got injured in our last game... :(

I can see (or wish) for 2 scenarios:

- We beat you lot and turn this crap season around.
- We lose very badly and our sorry excuse for a coach gets sacked.

Just watched the match of the day highlights.
What a prick Motson is
1. 'Rooney hasn't scored since the opening game of the season' - He was banned for 3 games.
2. 'Scholes hasn't scored since boxing day last year' - He was injured for 6 months.
3. 'He scored in 16 seconds against Sheff Utd last week. I'm sure he'll remember this goal longer than that'

Rooney has looked a bit off though. Not sure why, just a combination of things - he seems to try the most complicated passes when a simple one would do, shoot from crazy angles and then mishit the easy shots - i think he's got so much ability that he sometimes needs to reign it in and do the simple things first. I was hoping for an impressive return from him, particularly against Arsenal, but he hasn't really shown up yet. Maybe the sting of last years Benfica result will remind him to produce the goods.

So given the underwhelming performance saturday, tomorrows lineup:?

----------VDS--------------
-Gary--Rio--Vidic--Heinze--
--------Carrick------------
-Fletcher----------Ronaldo-
----------Scholes----------
-----Rooney----Saha--------

Bench of Smith, Oshea, Silvestre, Ole and Kuzcak

Wow, Rooney really played badly last night. I hope he can keep his hairy chin up and not let all the bad performance affect his confidence. I'm sure its just due to the lack of games which is causing this poor performance. Good to see Heinze back! i forgot how good he was!

I think United did well last night, all considering. Benfica was a tough team to play against, particularly in the first half when it was decided tackling was not allowed. Some of the diving/simulation was atrocious, but I guess United just have to learn how to deal with it. Funny how all that stopped after Saha scored.

For all the possession United conceeded in the first half, they never really looked like conceding, which is encouraging for the defence. However, the midfield was shambolic in the first 45, O'Shea, Carrick and Scholes having very little understanding at all. At this stage Fergie should acknowledge he's got some intelligent, skilled players, and just pick a system for them to get used to.

As for Ronaldo, I guess I'm the only one that thought he always tried to take on one too many. Carrick got into some great positions when Ronaldo pulled away defenders, but he barely ever looked up to find him. He's still wasteful and he's still not really a winger. I watched Celtic's highlights, and the cross to Miller was something United just don't do anymore: winger receives it, looks up and wham into the box with pace. Ronaldo and park when he's playing always look to run at defenders, sometimes I think we just need some quick passing and crossing, Saha is certainly good enough in the air!

i think that it was an unfair result
in first the 50/60 minutes dominated the game, made high pressure what it compelled the defenses of manchester to kick the ball it are and to miss to passes manchester arrived at golo equips it in one launches of counterattack and the benfica players lost it, they did'nt keep the high pressure and allowed man utd to play the way they wanted
man utd bet everything in ronaldo, he was the only player who created dangerous situations for man utd and they waited for an error from benfica to capitalize their strategy
I think that the fair result would be a draw because man utd did played very defensively and played always in counter-attack
benfica also didn't deserve to earn because we didn't create any clear situation of danger, even after dominating most of the game

should've been 0-0 in all honesty. We were absolutely shocking in the first half, the only person (and this semms to be true for the season as a whole at the moment) that tried was Ronaldo, who was excellent last night. Rooney was so shite all game, I honestly think hes on drugs or similar judging by his performance, and the look on his face/in his eyes for most of the game. Good to see Vidic back, get Brown in as well and play Rio as a DM, cause O'shite is well....shite.

Either way, nice finish from Saha, albeit deflected, after doinfg fuck all for the resr of the match, and another vital three points.

first off, your assesment of the first half is right, but the second half, United dominated. A draw for United would have been fine, not so much for benfica.
Benfica got outclassed in the second half, and benfica just could not come back from the goal. The diving and acting by benfica was downright embarassing... Heinze was my man of the match.. what a player he is

nice defending...and nice formation!! LOL...more like a 4-3-3...with Ronaldo running in more...it suits his style more...but then Rooney...hm....nice defending...that's all i can say of him as of now...

and great to see Ronaldo just feeding off those boos and jeers!

I think it was a deserved win for you tonight. Benfica coach said it was unfair, but nobody cars what the idiot says anyways. The managed to do something no one ever did. Get booed by the fans of all big three, always when he was coaching one of them.

By the way, something is really wrong with Rooney, it seems he forgot how to play footie. only thing he did was receive the ball and pass it back, and everytime he tried going forward he would lose the ball.

I can't believe how crap O'Shea is and how the hell he manages to play for your team. He's even worse than Beto, and that ain't easy... :):)

Maybe a draw was fair, but we created close to zero chances, United scored.

* Goes off to kill Benfica's pathetic excuse for a coach *

I think he needs a bit on granny love, then he'll be alright again

I do wonder if SAF told everyone to just chill in the first half, because Benfica clearly tired themselves out without actually accomplishing anything. United owned the last 40 minutes of the game, should have scored at least 2 more. That triple save was awesome, and Saha missed a peach of a cross from carrick.

I loved how the diving stopped after United scored. Funny that, what a coincidence that the players only seem to get those roll around to feel better injuries when they're not behind.

What's this about Scholes being raged at by Gay rights activists? Apparently he said something to the ref? I love it, bet he'll be banned for 3 games, for being the first player to ever say something derogatory to a referee in the history of football. Sigh. Being United player = instant media attention when you sneeze, and probably get match ban for being so damn inconsiderate.

a 'puff'is an effeminate man. Maybe not a gay man. So it's not really a gay rights issue. In Manchester it is quite common to call someone a puff if they're not pulling their weight or being a bit soft (diving, feigning injury, etc)
