Manchester United Thread

Is it me overreacting or is Cristiano Ronaldo having a spectacular league start? only if he did that in the WC instead of diving every 5 minutes.

PS - confirming some comments here I can tell you that the CL draw was greeted by benfica fans with excessive optimism. It shows some ignorance since the ridicoulous manchester united they caught and beat last year (even if a bit lucky to score 2 on 2 shots, not exackly running over man utd) is a bit different from the one making this wonderful debut in the league.

I have a feeling that Man Utd visit to Luz will be funny to watch. I wan't portuguese teams to do well but simply can't stand with benfica's usual arrogance and big mouth.

You're always here in these forums running your mouth in favour of Portuguese football except for Benfica eh?

Still with that inferiority complexion? (Benfica > Sporting)

I wish Sporting does well. (Even though i dont believe they will)

As for Benfica fans being arrogant, well, Portuguese teams have been beating english team consistently at club and national, so we're hoping we can still ride that wave. :)
If we don't, tough, can't win all the time.

Well I seriously doubt benfica will beat United this time round. We were a mess the begining of last season when we were messing around with 4-3-3. It just didnt work. Lille even got a result out of us when we were playing like that. Unless your players dive to gain freekicks or some controversial penalty then I can only see benfica getting beat and thats not me being biased or arrogant.

Well, i really don't know. Benfica hasn't been playing well lately, we began the season playing 4-4-2 and now we changed back to 4-3-3. It's still work in progress. However, if our full squad is fit and we play something like this:

Simao-----Nuno Gomes-----Miccoli
------------Rui Costa-----------
-------Petit----Katsouranis-----
Leo---Anderson---Luisao---Nelson
-------------Quim---------------

We'll have preety much the same team as last year, adding the class of Rui Costa, and playing Katsoranis instead of that clown Beto. I think we can compete with anyone.

My main reason to worry about this season is our new coach, Fernando Santos, i don't really have much faith in him... :(

That's a pretty mighty looking team actually, if that team gels a bit it certainly has some potential to do something in the CL.

LOL I love the arrogance coming from the benfica fans. Last year we played you with our 4-3-3 formation which clearly didnt work for our players. But you'll be playing a much different team to that one with us playing 4-4-2. It wont be an easy match but I would put money on it that United will come out on top against Benfica and most probably top the group aswell.

today Karagounis from benfica said in the papers that benfica stands an obvious easy chance of qualifying. So here is the proof of what I was saying. it's this stuff we hate about benfica around here. Some respect (and even sense of ridicule) would be welcomed.

Celtic is a very strong team, specially at home and Manchester United this year is super impressive. The problem is that benfica fans (and papers) take last years comedy game, in which even the most hated benfica player scored in a game with 2 goals out of 2 shots as a rule to follow.

One thing is true and I've written about it: portuguese have been having UK teams for breakfast in the last years with a ridiculous ease (both club and national team level). Let's see if it remains that way this year in benfica group. The fans (and players) surely sound (over) confident.

PS - About Airjoca saying benfica are playing good it's the perfect example of benfica's overconfidence. Benfica just won 3-0 against a austria wien that lost 7 first team players and that hasn't won a game in 8 this season! :). In pre-season games they took several defeats, including a 3-0 against AEK and other against Sporting CP so hardly "playing well in recent times".

Mauras you say a lot of shite about Benfica, take care of your little club. Because with Inter and Bayern München there, you haven't many chances to step foward.

And yes we lost many games and whats the problem? A team can learn more with their mistakes at the pre-season than season, so it's like I say. "At the end of the League we see who's better".

I said Benfica HASN'T been playing well.

And mate: If you don't believe you can win, you won't win. If Benfica was in the group Sporting is, i wouldn't be so confident, but the way things turned out, i feel confident. Why wouldn't I? It's football, anything can happen.

Ps: Why don't you find the Inter and Bayern threads and post there? ;)

celtic is a strong team? are you on fucking crack? what makes you think that?

Interesting stuff found at soccergaming.

Alex Ferguson will complete the signing of hargreaves, but don't expect it to become news until the end of the window, he will be unveiled alongside Carlos Tevez with Ferguson opting for a 2 3 1 formation with Hargreaves and Carrick in the centre, Rooney and Ronaldo on the wings with Rooney given a free role similar to Ronaldinho's, Tevez playing just behind Saha. The fee's will be 17 million for Hargreaves and Tevez at a cut price 17.5m. Looks like it could be good times for Fergie, a line up that looks like it will play beautiful football, an addition we need at the moment in the premiership. Chelsea will sign Torres in order to prevent him joining any other premiership side next summer, the fee will be overpriced at 30+ million.

Manchester United are close to sealing the £16.9 million pound transfer of controversial Argentinean forward, Carlos Tevez.
The player, who has gone on strike from current club, Corinthians, will reportedly sign a five year contract with the Old Trafford outfit, by the close of the European transfer window. His agent, Adrián Ruocco, who has been in England trying to negotiate the transfer of Tevez to Manchester United, confirmed to the Placar agency, that his client was “very close to moving to a club in England”. Although he did not disclose the name of the club, sources in South America claim that Manchester United will be the eventual destination of Carlos Tevez.

This would represent a major coup for United as they had faced stiffed competition for Tevez’s signature from the likes of Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Internazionale. Chelsea were also very interested in Tevez and were even believed to have made a last minute bid for the player, in a complicated deal, which would have seen Tevez join French club, Rennes, on loan. However, the player rejected the move, sighting a preference to join Argentinean compatriot, Gabriel Heinze, at Manchester United, rather than go on loan to France, for a season.

source: football correspondants.

hargreaves still an outside chance, but tevez likely

formation with hargreaves:

-------hargreaves-----carrick--------
-------------------------------------
--ronaldo-------tevez--------rooney-
----------------saha----------------

without:
---------scholes-----carrick---------
-------------------------------------
--ronaldo-------tevez--------rooney-
----------------saha----------------

Sounds realistic enough to me.

Why does silvestre get to play? WHY!?! I don't care that he scored, his job is defence, and as usual he's had 3 howlers in the first half alone. One giving up a goal out of nothing!

On a side note, my lord Watford are a hit and hope team, who needs a midfield!

Tevez will be an awesome signing. He will set the prem alight IMO, he's really suited for it.

Celtic are a strong team, like you've said, mostly at Home.

Doesnt look as though Hargreaves will join us now so maybe we could try for Senna again?
Now although we have won the last two games comfortably doesnt anyone else think that in Rooneys absence that this is where Rossi could have made the step up and show what he could do upfront with Saha? I personally think this is an opportunity missed to assess Rossi at this level properly rather than a couple of sub appearances.

I think Sir Alex chose to give that opportunity to Solskjaer instead seeing how Rossi still have his whole future ahead of him.

It was a tricky game but we won nonetheless.I now can understand why Ben Foster was loaned out to Watford. They played just like United of old! The keeper comes alive when in possesion of the ball to launch quick counter attacks. They were poor to be honest, totally bypass their own midfield.Scholesy would have a field day if he was playin! Fletcher was energetic to say the least but still gave too much possession away.Carrick was solid but still need a few games to get his full senses going.Despite scoring a goal,Silvestre shouldnt have started.Evra couldnt have dealt with that kid Young.I hope Giggsy can keep up with his superb performance in the next few days, simply majestic.I agree the lads are much more matured now,if this was last season,we would have conceded and lost points in the end.Overall, keepin up with the great start, another 3 points and still top table.Forza United!!
