Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

August Testimonial I believe. I'd imagine he had to be forced into having one, haha

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Weird how somethings are going to be much different next year, who else to leave! Berba? Owen?

Surely now Fergie has to address centre mid, no more Scholes, Hargreaves rumoured to be out. Leaving Carrick, Fletcher, Gibson not the scariest is it!

Pretty scary if you ask me

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Legendary player indeed! One of the best midfielders I've eeever seen!! It's been an absolute pleasure Paul! Thank you for everything! Like Ben, even as a neutral and not a Utd fan, I'm sad to have seen the last of him! he's given Football and not just this club so much!

And right time to do it too. He really had become a shadow of himself and at times was more of a liability in recent times than helpful. So I'm also glad to see him quits before he gets really crap and puts in more mediocre performances.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Apparently about 5 or 6 Barca players hounded Scholes for his shirt after the Champion's League final. Just shows the respect he holds outside England, where I dont think he was appreciated enough.

Iniesta got it in the end.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

quotes:

Zinedine Zidane :
"My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. Undoubtedly the best midfielder of his generation. He's almost untouchable in what he does. He makes the game look easy because he has so much natural ability."

Sir Bobby Charlton :
"Paul Scholes is my favourite player. He epitomises the spirit of Manchester United and everything that is good about football" "He's always so in control and pinpoint accurate with his passing; a beautiful player to watch."

Sir Alex Ferguson - (whilst having a list of Manchester United players over 30 read to him) :
"You forgot Paul Scholes - and he is my best player."

Patrick Viera :
"The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy - Scholes"

Laurent Blanc :
"I've said it before and I tell anyone who asks me; Scholes is easily the best English player. Intelligence, strength, unbelievable technique - all the attributes are there. At Manchester United I saw what he can do and all I could say is "wow"."

Edgar Davids :
"Every one of us is just trying to become as good as him. Everyone can learn from Paul Scholes"

Thierry Henry :
"I can't understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it's because he doesn't seek the limelight like some of the other "stars"."

"Every time we used to play against Manchester United, we always used to be scared of Paul Scholes. His vision, the way he sees the game, his goals ratio... he has indestructible mental strength and he is a genuine competitor."

Gordon Strachan :
“He can score goals, hit crossfield passes, play one-twos, beat people and win headers in the opponents' box, so if you take that whole package I don't think I've seen anybody as consistent - and he's been doing that for 10 or 11 years."

Cesc Fabregas :
"He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League".

Socrates :
"Good enough to play for Brazil. I love to watch Scholes, to see him pass, the boy with the red hair and the red shirt."

Andrei Shevchenko :
"They have two of the world's best young players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, but the player who most impresses me is Paul Scholes. He is United's most important player, he makes most things happen on the field."

Roy Keane :
"Superb on the field, modest and sensible off it. No celebrity bullshit, no self-promotion or glory-hunting, an amazingly gifted player who remained unaffected as a human being."

Glenn Hoddle:
"There isn't a player of his mould anywhere else in the world."

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Very sad, you don't have many players with his talent as well as a very "human" personality off the pitch these days.

He was excellent earlier in the season, particularly the first couple of months but faded away as the season went on.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Such a contrast between Neville retiring and Scholes. While I despise Neville and glad to see him retire (although he's on Sky), it's the opposite for Scholes.

Great player (although not "complete" as his tackles weren't too good) and his vision and skill will certainly be missed from the game. I also admired how he kept himself out of the limelight and kept away from controversy. Too many footballers can learn from his example there.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

sounds like he has died.

he has probably retired at the right time. he will always be a legend @ UTD

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Got to be said that Owen is a complete disgrace. He's just said he'd rather sit on the bench for a top team than play every game for a poor team.

So basically he's happy to sit there collecting his huge wage, playing 279 mins a season or whatever, just for a medal he doesn't deserve. But then you have kids who'd love to play football for any team and get paid for it. A disgusting attitude and an insult to the game and the professionalism of it all.

I just can't understand players like him and Winston Bogarde just wanting to coast along and collect the wage whilst collecting medals they can never show off to their kids and say they earned.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

He's not getting paid much at all (in reality), especially if he doesn't play.

I'd much rather sit on the bench for United than play for the likes of Blackburn or Birmingham anyway, even if you only played five games you'd probably get more chances on goal than you would in an entire season for one of them. Plus you get the chance to play with great players against great teams regardless of how little that chance actually is.

He's been nothing but a professional since he's been here. Never said a word about not playing, never kicked up a fuss, always been ready when he's been called upon. Perhaps he realises he can't play a full season anymore anyway so why bother with an awful team?

I'll never be a true fan because of his past but he's been a sound buy since we got him and that's all you can ask.

Or does it just grate that he can actually say he's got a league medal when no Liverpool player in the last 20 years can?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

To be fair, part of what he said was due to him being able to/wanting to practice on a daily basis with great quality players. along with being able to compete in the biggest of stages weekly. he doesnt get paid unless he plays, so its not like hes just in it for the cash. medals maybe.

anyways, as stated above, he knows what position/stage of his career he is in. a big reason why he wants to stay.

The league medal he made a great contribution to get? 279 mins of football?

Why leave Real Madrid to join Newcastle if he's happier to sit on the bench and collect medals rather than play every game?

Foreigners have a reputation for being mercenaries but he's just shown himself right up.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I actually agree. If someone is as good at their job as he is, they should be doing it as much as they can. Especially when you consider that he's only got 1 or 2 years left.

He could make a huge difference at a promoted club, or even (gasp) somewhere like Everton.

I'm gutted he's staying. Don't have anything against him, but it looks very much like a 'value' signing. When there are so many (idiotic) United fans encouraging a Berbatov exit, I just get very scared that we're shoving lil Mickey in as our new 3rd choice. Which is ridiculous on so many levels.

If he wants to stay and never play, that's one thing, but if he replaces Berbatov or inhibits Welbeck's progression, I don't think it's worth it. He's not even that clinical anymore.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Owen is 31, that´s not near the end of fotballers carrer this days..

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

For him it is. I'd wager a lot of money that he won't still be playing at prem level in 2 years. Needs acceleration to survive.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I guess this means Welbeck is going back on loan then? I honestly don't think theirs much room for Owen if any, His finishing is VASTLY overrated he's got great awareness and positioning of were to be but his actually finishing isn't great.

Seriously though how come we haven't been linked with Banega :(( Cheaper than Modric, better defensively so he could play in a 2 with any of our midfielder.

Banega-Anderson = Offensive
Banega-Carrick- = Balance
Banega-Fletcher = Bite

Problem with Modric is he negates Anderson IMO.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

owen did good knowing Mutd allow players in their late 30`s to stay. Playing a game is luxury at 34

Yeah, I think he'd be the perfect fit. I'm pretty sure I read an article where Tim Vickery mentioned he'd even played in the holding role at Boca.

For all the muppetry about attempting to shoehorn Sneijder into a two man midfield, I'd think someone like Banega would suit our side much better.

I know Modric has played the last season or two in the middle but I still think Spurs look a bit fragile defensively in that area with him in there.

It's going to be an interesting summer.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

As much as everyone raves about Banega, we just don't seem to buy the players people think we will.

I don't even think we'll be looking at Sneijder and Modric, I bet SAF hasn't bothered trying to get them.

One on one with the keeper, I'd put a lot more money on Owen to score than Berba. And he proved this in the last league game of the season, which also got him a spot on the bench in the final over Berba. I've been against the idea of buying Berba since forever. He eventually won me over with some of his great ball control and his goals but the fact still remains that he has messed up the pace and fluidity of our play ever since he joined us.
I look at him like Ruud. Yes he's a great player, but he'll need to be sacrificed for the greater good if we're to push forward for that 4th European Cup. And we need to sell Berba while we can, to ensure we get a decent fee for him. He's already worth less than half of what we paid.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Totally disagree for what it's worth. Berbatov is a truly class striker willing to be 3rd choice. He's better than any other team in the league's second striker, no matter 3rd. (Anelka? Chamakh? Dzeko/ Balotelli? Carroll?). He loves United, is happy to chill and I just don't think we can ask for more than that.

If Benzema came, he wouldn't be happy on the bench.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I'm not disagreeing with anything you said. But all that's besides the point.
Is he a great player? Yes. But he doesnt belong in our team. Just like Diego Forlan didnt either, and to some extend van Nistelrooy too. So I'm saying get rid of him now while we can, so atleast we'd get some cash for him. Even though we won the league, this team is in the middle of a transition. 3 players retired this season, we're down to our last "Fledgling" (Giggs), so we need to reshape our team.
We're gonna have a new keeper alongside Lindegaard, we have some young defenders who're growing up, we're in the middle of sorting out our midfield now, and we dont someone like Berbatov in the team who're gonna stifle our growth. I dont mean to sound negative and make him seem like some kind of "cancer" in our squad. I just think his way of playing isnt our future. He might be able to help us short term (like maybe another year or two) but we need to look at the bigger picture and think, if we can get some money back for him and reinvest it elsewhere, it might be for the best.
Plus Owen is still a more natural goalscorer so we dont exactly need Berba.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

But he's 3rd choice and happy with that role. if we sell him then that means we HAVE to start Rooney and Hernandez all the time (leading to both being burned out) and when we do need to rest them bringing in a past it Owen, Over the course of a season you need 3 or maybe 4 strikers, we've got a brilliant balance at the moment. the only way I'd accept Berbatov going is if we brought in someone like Sanchez.

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

Didn't he walk out when he didn't get on the bench vs Barca?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

what about Wellbeck, Macheda, Diouf and Cleverley? will they return?

Re: Manchester United Champions Thread!!!19!!!!!

I like a lot the images of Scholes with the Iniesta shirt. That the last shirt he has weared is a Barcelona one is something that should make us barcelona fans specially proud, as Scholes has been a legend. Many of the barcelona players run for him to have his shirt. That's usually what opponents do with Messi, Xavi, etc... That speaks volumes of how respected he has been in the pitch all this years. He has honoured our shirt as he has honoured Manchester United all this years.

Scholes has been one of the best midfielders in the last 15 years. A big professional and an example for players to come.

I still remember that goal that put us out of the champions 2 years ago. When I watched it was him who reached the ball, I feared. And with a reason. I think he was one of the few english midfielders that could have played in Italy and Spain and shine anyway (something other english midfielders struggle), because he had that special footballing brain combined with energy.

Thanks for all, legend!
