Football at the moment is balanced on the edge of a very steep cliff. And as much as don't love Platini, without rules like the fair play one, it's going to stop being fun to watch for a lot of people out there. And with worldwide access to other sports growing, it's only a matter of time before fans start watching something else.

I'd happily have United drop out of the top 4 and into mid-table mediocrity if it meant the league could impose a salary cap. It would make it fun again. All the premier league is going to be about in the forseeable future is whether a Russian Oil Baron's loss-making toy can beat a Saudi Oil Baron's loss making toy.

I understand where your coming from, but the same applies with the champs league money it gave the teams that qualify such a finacial advantage that the rest of the league could never catch up hence the big 4 thing!

I actually heard an idea from a City fan over on the Caf which makes lots of sense - just have a wage cap that is a defined % of the highest revenue in the league.

Ie, if United earn the most of all teams at c. £300m, set a wage cap at 66% of this, and any team can spend up to but not above £200m.

This really does get around most of the issues of CL funding and so forth. I think it's really sensible.

do you actually think wage caps is the answer plz. Sports in the states still work around that , like they do for taxes . Big clubs produce too much to restrict them. I`m sure Beckham isn`t on the wage cap while his team mates make some 18k a yrs.

He was never supposed to return this weekend, that's just what his doctor said (from America). He's not trained all week and nobody at United had said he was going to play which is why SAF was a bit put out that Steadman had made the comment.

I give up. No league for us this season. Fair enough, the two teams that make the largest operating losses in the world will probably finish one and two. And we'll slip down, lose revenue and eventually, plllleeeassseee be sold.

Cannot describe how poor it is to let 4 2 goal leads slip this early in the season. Something has broken in the team spirit. If Fergie doesn't want to retire having left a shambles, he needs to sort something out, and soon.

If Gibson plays another half of football for the first XI again, I honestly think I might stop watching.

I've honestly got no idea why Carrick came off instead of Gibson. It doesn't matter if he was a sub, he was fucking awful and it was like playing with 10 men. Rooney's touch still not there.

Just an awful second half performance all round. If Vidic's header had've gone instead of hitting the post we'd be 3 up and cruising but from there we just lost it completely.

Fuming.

Giggs coming off really changed the game but for us to do that again really shows their is a problem but im not actually sure what it is?

Shame because Nani was on fire prior to the self destruct button being pushed.

That was...bizarre. 2-0's always a dangerous scoreline but we should have really seen the game out. More uncharacteristic errors, not clinical enough etc etc.

I would say BS but you never know, If anything I'm worried about his mental toughness at the moment, Beckham and Ronaldo showed the media the middle finger with stunning displays but Rooney seems to be struggling to get the ball under control.

I don`t think so, I do believe Rooney`s moral value has crumble to a low. He took MUTD for granted and maybe Fergie hasn`t given him a door to come through , more like a window.I`m sure Rooney loves MUTD but I rather see him at Arsenal than,City ffs! Take RVP,Vela,Bendtner and 20mil :LOL:

Yeah I know and normally I'd take everything with a huge pinch of salt but I just find it believable given what's happened and the fact that DT and a few other journos have published this late on Sunday night. Seems like they've got a scoop of some kind.

It could also be a bargaining tool on Rooney's part for a new contract to put him up into the kind of wages that City players are on.

Regardless, if he can't see Fergie is looking out for his best interests then he's a twat and I don't want him bringing the club down with his attitude and poor performances. His advisors must be a total bunch of cunts too.

I know some posters will respond with ‘knee jerk’ or ‘in Fergie we trust’ or other such generalities, but in all seriousness if we sell Rooney I think that will be the line in the sand drawn to the end of our dominance. Ignoring what Rooney represents to us on the pitch – our best player and talisman – it would do irreparable damage to our reputation and to our status as a true world power.

Rooney is the symbol of what United are in English football – the pinnacle. He left his boyhood club, and not a bad one at that, to join the biggest club to win the biggest honours. We paid an exorbitant fee for a relatively unproven kid – because we could. And both parities have delivered in mutually moving forward to success.

But now, the thought that just 6 months after seeming to be utterly in love with United he would want to leave…I just don’t know what to say. A player who seemed so committed, who seems, let’s face it, really easy to manage due to a pretty straight forward approach to most things, what did Fergie do?

I know that Ferguson has delivered us the fans more than anyone could have ever dreamed, and I know that we’ve called false curtains on him a few times and I really never, EVER thought that the notion could even run through my head but…surely he’s wrong on this one? Surely he needs to get off his high horse and show Wayne some compassion? I mean, he practically bent over backwards to keep Ronaldo at the club. As Rooney, wouldn’t you expect some showing of that commitment?

Anyway, if Wayne leaves to another club I honestly do fear for us. We don’t have the quality to replace him, we certainly don’t appear to have the money to replace him and even if we could, it would never fix the damage done to our image. With the Lljajic thing, the Bebe thing, the Ramsey thing and now this…I just can’t work out what has gone so wrong in our board room.

We're in a situation where Fergie has to finally give in and bend over backwards to keep Rooney cuz if anything's gonna ruin us, its Fergie's ego at the moment.
I still believe to this day that he made the wrong choices with the people he kicked out of the club. The only difference there was that we had a bit of luck and Sir Alex was able to justify it by building more successful years at the club. That's a credit to the genius of the man, not his ego.
The problem now is that our financial situation and our performances this year are gonna make it too hard to justify selling Rooney, no matter how much we get for him.

It's on the BBC now that he won't sign a new contract. Barring a massive and unlikely change in circumstances (e.g. Fergie going) I think he won't be a Man Utd player after summer 2012 (perhaps earlier).

I would say you need to sell him financially. Can you afford to write-off a player who has a value somewhere between £30-50m ? If you sell him now or next summer at least you would have the money to buy a replacement.

I could see Real Madrid paying £30m, dont forget the Euro is 1.14 (to GBP now) compared to 1.45 5 years ago, so if Rooney was to cost £30m that would only be €34m, whereas five years ago it would have been about €44m.

They could always send a few players the other way Kaká / Benzema, which would reduce the overall outlay.

I don't think Rooney will leave. I think (as much as Fergie's ego has taken over his mind), you really have to look at the poor form Rooney has been in lately leading to this news feature? And the british press has never given him any breathing space since the WC to now on his on pitch and off pitch affairs...

In all seriousness at this moment in time Rooney can leave all he wants, great player as he is, he's become a bit of a cock.

Theirs a reason SAF did all he could to keep Ronaldo here and their would also be a reason to why he'd let Rooney leave. One was a model professional who showed his mettle under pressure and left with good memories intact while Rooney could be going the way of Ince.

I like Rooney as he does represent what Man Utd are, in the sense that England's best player playing for the biggest club in England and without him, we don't really have that "star" representation on the world stage (again, if you understand what i mean)

But i also agree that Fergie is a great manager, and I'm sure he has his reasons in having his way, but sometimes because he won't back down, the team gets hurt in the overall view of things (and our current financial situation doesn't help) and if Rooney goes, i don't see Fergie being able to pull us back to the heights of the world...

I also have to say that how the two major clubs that slash cash as if its nothing doesn't help the case where everyone wants to play for them now because they get that crazy amount of money. Its as if the players don't care about the traditions or prides of representing a club with such history and culture...

but with that said, i'm not a fan of Rooney as I really do think that he's not that bright and isn't as focused on the pitch as he should/could be...

Not sure if you've seen David Gill's comments, but they're pretty ominous, basically that an announcement will be made at the appropriate time but (the UNICEF event) is not an appropriate time.

Madness all of this. From all parties. Rooney would be best to stay playing for a major team where he is revered, Fergie would be better off not having to replace his best player, City would be better off not spunking money just for the sake of it and England would be better off if he could just get on with his football.

If this is all coming from his f*cking agent...I swear...scum. of. earth.
