Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

My mate pointed out the other day after the sheild...that we looked a little lightweight in the middle.I kinda agree but I'm gonna leave Fletcher to shine on and show what he is made of this season.Carrick has already cemented his position in the middle so that leaves another spot left for Ando,Fletcher or even Gibson.

I assume if Hargo does not get fit by December,we will go out and buy a replacement in January. We are a patient club, always have, always will be...so I guess its gonna be like that.Roll on Sunday.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think we're set up to do very well against teams that defend all game, but against the very best 4 man midfields will be overrun a bit. Park was clearly tucking in to help out on Sunday, but as you'd expect against a trio of Essien, Lampard and Ballack (2nd half) we didn't see lots of the ball in that area.

Seems to me Fergie sets us up to allow teams to have the centre midfield in front of our defence, and also that he doesn't have his players hassle the player ont he ball the way Liverpool or even Barcelona tend to do. All a bit strange from my point of view, perhaps it's about conserving energy?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Can't be about conserving energy because it looks like we get knackered in the second half of games.

It's always the way against Chelsea, we dominate the first half and miss several chances that would probably kill the game off in before half time, then come the break, Chelsea wake up and we barely see any of the ball for the next 45 minutes, and they inevitably score.

Either we get knackered, or Fergie just tells them to defend, either way it rarely works unless we get two or more against them in the first half.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Whatever it is, its happening too often. To be honest, I'd rather us defend in the first half and attack in the second if its really a tactical issue.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Well, even if you say that you didn't have Vidic, i previously said that in your friendlies you were conceding a lot and that you could be in trouble against a better team, you replyed "we have the best defence" well, sure you scored one, but you conceded 2. =/
Im not saying im right, im just pointing out that you guys need to see the facts and admit that you concede a lot. But your attack, even wihout cr7, seems ok. Valencia (whats up with the mad face all the time?) and Nani (who is the omg what a waste of money, he is awful, now? Just give the kid time) will make wonders on the wings. Just give them some freedom and maybe exchanging wings, and they will be a threat in a couple of months.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I dont think its right to say we still have the best defence anymore. We've looked shakey at the back ever since we conceeded our first goal after that long run of cleansheets.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

To be fair we've barely had a settled back 5 for two games in a row since the turn of the new year. First with Rio's injuries, now Vida and EVDS - the defence shuld be the one part fo the team that is always there.

I think that a back 5 of:

----------VDS-----------
-Brown--Rio--Vida--Evra-

Is as good as any in world football. It's between us and Chelsea, imo.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Best centre-back partnership in the world.

I hope Rio can overcome his back problems and have a better season than last.

If he can be even half as good as he was during 07/08, I'll be delighted, he was an absolute beast that season and hopefully Vida can carry his great form from last season into this.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Vida and Rio is the best partnership we have since Pallister and Bruce.
Rio is getting better with age it seems,a true mark of class and Vida makes up his lack of speed with his astute reading of the game and his no-nonsense aggression.

Vida will be back for our 3rd league game and hopefully will stabilize that currently shakey backline.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Weird, apparently Park scored in some random S Korea match against Paraguay. I assume then he won't be playing on Sunday, given the distances he would have had to travel...booo....

Must be a friendly too. Shame.

Something which I called during the run and everyone else poo-pooed the idea because 'they're professionals and conceding one goal wouldn't affect them in the slightest.' :P

For those of us who don't speak German (although it's fairly easy to work out) ;) I asked the rather nice lady next to me if she'd translate it for me, and it looks like we're competing with Bayern to have a deal finalised by the end of the transfer window.
Interesting...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Very knee-jerk to say we don't have the best defence after we concede 2 against Chelsea a very good side with one of them being controversial

We scored 2 also mate.

When have we looked shaky at the back? I remember the Champions League final where 9 or 10 of our lads just weren't their or upto for it. otherwise we don't look shakey at the back at all.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Well Rio looked like he couldn't be arsed today, and we've got no Evans or Vidic for the start of the season...

Well after that run of cleansheets, how many did we conceed? A little too many if you ask me. And we also let Liverpool hammer us in our own yard which there's no excuse for.

I thought C. Park scored in that game and not JS Park.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

To be fair ever since we humped you at OT your defence was poor. You needed to outscore quite a few teams to win the title.

Wigan, Villa etc

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

To be fair..even you lot did humped us at OT...our poor defence was good enough to carry us forward as Champions at the finishing line.We did outscore quite a few teams to win the title.
Wigan,Villa etc.

It was great. We finally had teams not playing a 5-5-0 against us, and so had some entertaining matches. Of course we can score more when teams aren't in two lines in their last 18. It was more like the United of old, and one of the reasons I love watching us over other top teams.

We don't have the personnel to be defensive (esp w/o Hargreaves).

Oh and the best bit about that humping...it made absolutely no difference whatsoever. I wonder if Middlesborough fans still talk about when they 'humped' us and scored 4 a few years back. Guess not cause it really didn't help them either...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

But the fact still remains that we still havent patched up the defence and now we've lost goals from Tevez and Ronaldo.
My worry is whether we can still outscore the opposition as well as we used to be able to.
And to add to that, Rio gives away a dreadful goal and now this morning we were linked with a new german keeper from Schalke. This doesnt sound like the "best defence" to me. I know I usually sound negative but I'm saying it how I see it, not because I like what I'm seeing.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Rio and Vida have barely played together since that Liverpool match. I'll start getting worried when they're not able to cut it. (although I am slightly concerned about Vida - a 'knock' has kept him out almost 3 months - long time for a man not blessed with acceleration to begin with, and whose general appraoch to getting burned is risk a red and hack the opponent down)

Have fingers (and toes) crossed for a similar perfromance as Fulham first day in 06/07 (I think?) when everyone expected us to be terrible and we blitzed them. Obvioulsy the random international break won't have helped, but at least we have an extra day of rest.
