Manchester United Thread

It is interesting really how we've found ourselves in the position we're in.

The only trully good performance we've put in all season was against Chelsea at OT, or at least as far as I can remember.

It was the only game this season where we've looked bothered about winning it. Granted all those 1-0's we've had, we've dominated the game, but they've been at a canter.

Last season we wanted it more I think, all those 4-0 scorelines that we racked up defnitely prove that type of thing.

Seems noone really wants it this year, none of the 'top four' have really been convincing at any point in the season, even with Chelsea's start to the season you could tell they couldn't keep up the beautiful football for too long.

Also, I want Hargreaves back! I can guarentee he would've been effective yesterday, especially if paired with Scholes.

Yeah Hargreaves would've been useful for sure. Scholes and Giggs were fucking useless when they came on. Maybe they were tired from midweek (why wasn't the game moved to today?) but they were brought on for their experience and to try and get us back into the game and all they seemed to do was give the ball away.

About the season as a whole, haven't we got more points than we had at this stage last season? I'm sure I read that the other day.

Wasnt there a point last season where we went 5 games in a row scoring 4 goals in each game?

Its called hope m8. At the start of this season I always thought there was something special about this season. I am a little superstitious about football, yesterday didn't chance my mind.

This season at Anfield, against you lot. The winning goal was scored by our Number 19 set up by our Number 18. Benayoun scored against Real Madrid in the 82minute, the same minute the winner was scored in the Paris final against Madrid (the only other time the two teams had met)

These are the things that give me a glimmer of hope somewhere, which Football fans all need! Realistically I know its probably bollox, and you'll get number 18, and heck you could well close the CL gap too. But your gonna have to do it yet again next season to better us in the league and equal us the CL. And make no mistake we will be up for the fight, this season is an indication of that. I just fear its a bit too late to finally put up a worthy barrier to your domination of the last 20 odd years.

Okay maybe with Torres and Gerrard playing for the majority of the season we still might not win the title outright, but you can't deny that we would be even closer to you atm. That is progress, you are the Champions of England, Europe and the the world (well Liga del Quilto or whatever their called) and we're not far off, we have shown we can match and surpass you head to head, we just need that extra bit of squad depth that you have to cope with injuries to crucial partnerships.

I'm just sick of the constant praise for Torres and Gerrard, what they do would not be possible without the massive contributions for Xabi, Mascherano, Aurelio (immense this season), Skrtel, Carragher, Reina, Kuyt etc

Sir I take my hat off to you, a very intriguing post which I agree with you. Alot of Liverpool fans would say they'll be top if Torres and Gerrard were not injured, you're the only one I've come across actually thinking Utd would be top now with Liverpool close behind. These types of posts is why I enjoy posting on forums like this where everyone respects each other despite supporting different teams where there is a rivalry at stake.

You're not allowed to mention Hargreaves - didn't you hear, United haven't had any major injuries this year ;)

I'd like to think that Fulham are not at all pleased at the thought of facing us on Saturday... :)

Argh, gotta stop reading the newspapers. Can't believe some of them are writing about how Liverpool 'dominated preceedings' with 'great possession play and smart passing'. What? Did they even watch the match? Liverpool scored 3 goals with balls played from within their own 18 yard box, and the 4th from a mediocre free kick. They neutralised United well, who were poor, but they hardly played any quality attackign football, unless by that you mean hoof and send the really quick guy after it.

Can we please get to Saturday soon....

Mediocre free kick? VDS didn't even bother moving for it.

You're starting to sound a bit bitter with your last few posts mate. All the other United supporters have admitted we played well but now you're coming out saying all we did was hoof the ball and score a "mediocre" set-piece? Please ...

No I said you played very well, contained us and kept us at bay. I just get annoyed with the revisionist press saying you guys played us off the park tis all. From where I was watching it was relatively even until the sending off, and even with the last 20 mins with 10 men we had more possession and and shots.

My point is that on Tuesday you played breath-taking football and took apart a very good European giant. On Saturday you played good containment football and capitalised on some very large mistakes. The press seem not to see the difference and that annoys me.

As for the free kick, reina/cech would ahve saved it. It was a good 2 yards inside the post, and VDS didn't move. All I can think is that he was 100% sure Gerrard was going to take it, so thought it was going across goal. It certainly wasn't unstoppable, is all I meant.

Dossena's chip on the other hand, was gorgeous. But a Manchester United team should not be getting scored on by one touch from a goal kick.

I'm not bitter at the result, like I said you deserved to win. But I just think it's a bit unfair to say United were awful and Liverpool were some kind of mix of Arsenal intricate passing and Pool of the 80's rock solid defence. Then again, I guess the press make their money by going overboard...

Fair enough mate, you make some good points there :TU:

Have to agree with you about the press though :BRICK:

Looks like this game brought us both reds fans together. Pretty sure Rooney and Gerrard won't be happy with us

I think because we've had a better season that we have for YEARS, and beaten some pretty good teams this season, that we're starting to get respected a bit more now.

Before this season I thought United fans would rarely give us respect or praise but with us putting in a title challenge, I think the attitude amongst MOST United fans has changed now. And because of that, Liverpool fans are giving respect back.

Yep, It also makes it a lot more interesting for us to have to beat you to the title rather than Chelsea or Arsenal (Even though Chelsea are probably the closer than you know)

Im over the loss now, I actually think its came at a good time, obviously the opposition couldnt have been worse but the timing is good, We now can start fresh and go on a long winning run till the end.

I think we havent played each other for the last time this season either :))

Yep, I'm expecting the teams to be drawn against each other in the CL ... and then we'll get whooped 5-1 or something and the tables will turn

I agree with you ryan. Played off the park we were not, the only time Liverpool really split us apart was when Gerrard missed from a few yards out but we were definitely well beaten and for once given a lesson in taking chances.

And oh yeah, I forgot about this! Holy Fucking Shit!

On a side, I've had three dreams in the last few days involving Vidic getting sent off so hopefully that won't happen again!

I totally agree with you here. Its only until this season that I've started to take notice of what you guys are doing. As hard as it is for me to say, I really do think you guys are on the brink of winning the title again. It might not be this season, maybe not even the next, but I think everyone gets the sense that its in the near future.
I hope this brings more desire for Sir Alex to carry on with us.

How long do you see Ferguson staying? It'll be a strange day to see someone else managing Utd!

I think next season will be his last, unless we somehow manage to not win the FA Cup, Premier League, and Champions League, in which case I'd say he would retire at the end of this one.

I know he can't stay with us forever but we do know that he'll be here as long as he feels hasn't "beaten" Liverpool.
Whether that means getting more league titles, or more European Cups, or becoming a more successful manager than Bob Paisley is anyone's guess.
But we know he has a target in his head and we all get the feeling that he's very close to it after the season we had last year.

I'm definitely with you on this one.

And it'll be interesting as well, because I'm too young to have seen Liverpool lift the title before so I honestly don't know how I'll feel when they do

Sir Alex seems to have already made his mind up about retiring. He will certainly not go beyond 70 so,that leaves him about 3 years left roughly.Despite being a huge rumour for all this while,I expect a certain Portuguese manager to succeed him.
