Manchester United Thread

i think that was true for the whole squad though. coming off the win midweek and what with us being 7 points clear with a game in hand we just werent up for it. hopefully that'll give us the kick in the ass that we needed, not the point in the season you want to see complacency setting in.

The defeat shouldn't be too big a surprise, maybe the scoreline, given Liverpool's record against the top 4 this season. I was very surprised that Fletcher didn't start and we lacked the experience of Giggs and Scholes in the midfield which would have given us the creative spark that the team was crying out for.

BTW I think we'll get Liverpool in the CL now. Im sure of it.

One of the reasons I was hoping for a draw before the match. Winning 3 games on the trot just hardly happens between the top teams and I would prefer getting past Manu in the CL then win this match, which will very likely turn out to be meaningless. Felt the same way last season when we got Chelsea...We are pretty screwed this season with 2 of the 3 english teams in the draw. :(

a tie in the CL would certainly get more tasty.

I'd rather scrape a 1-0 over two legs against United then win this game 4,5,6-1

I doubt we'll get Liverpool in the CL although I do feel Platini will fix the draw by putting the english teams against each other.

I think a defeat was coming we've lacked the passion to win matches nowdays and have been scraping matchs with 1-0,2-0 wins such as Inter and Newcastle, just wish I didn't have to lose against the fucking scouse bastards! In the 2nd half of the season, injuries and results have gone our way, what with Liverpool losing to Boro a few weeks back and losing Torres and Gerrard for a reasonable amount of time. However I do think even if they weren't injured Liverpool would not be top now.

Also what I find funny from today is that we lose to Liverpool and every closet Liverpool starts coming out out of the Woodwork saying they'll win the title ROFLMAO! Agreed they have a chance but Utd are 4 points clear with a game in hand, surely after today Fergie will give them the hairdryer and we'll start winning games again! even if we win 1-0 all the time.

Manchester United are still your closest title rivals.... despite the loss.

I would say chelsea are your closests title rivals with Hiddink now managing them. We'll mess up against the crap teams atleast once before the end of the season.

We really did miss Fletcher's intelligent positioning in the middle of the park today. Anderson was always in the wrong place, especially when Carrick was on the ball and needed someone in a good position to play it short to. Also, he would have tracked Gerrard's forward runs a lot better than Anderson.

Vidic needs a visit to the laboratory...watching Theo and Rooney play together they looked so strong and compatible. Rooney imo works so hard but doesn`t get in return that probably why he get an average of 13 goals a season.

Scoreline was a bit too harsh. We did not start with the best 11 nor the best formation...I always thought we are better off playing with a 3 man midfield against Pool...and I was right..we never took control of the midfield and deservedly lost the game. The thing to do now is to respond. It always is with this club - we lose a game and we respond. We always do. United through and through.

Dust ourselves off and get on with it, the league is still ours to lose.
Vida had a mare against the tranny, Carrick and Ando were outnumbered and pushed back too deep, and our big players didn't turn up. The Mobile is still switched off cause i know i'm gonna get shitloads of stick from my mates over this result, but swallow it down it will be even sweeter lifting that 18th league title.

Its called hope m8. At the start of this season I always thought there was something special about this season. I am a little superstitious about football, yesterday didn't chance my mind.

This season at Anfield, against you lot. The winning goal was scored by our Number 19 set up by our Number 18. Benayoun scored against Real Madrid in the 82minute, the same minute the winner was scored in the Paris final against Madrid (the only other time the two teams had met)

These are the things that give me a glimmer of hope somewhere, which Football fans all need! Realistically I know its probably bollox, and you'll get number 18, and heck you could well close the CL gap too. But your gonna have to do it yet again next season to better us in the league and equal us the CL. And make no mistake we will be up for the fight, this season is an indication of that. I just fear its a bit too late to finally put up a worthy barrier to your domination of the last 20 odd years.

Okay maybe with Torres and Gerrard playing for the majority of the season we still might not win the title outright, but you can't deny that we would be even closer to you atm. That is progress, you are the Champions of England, Europe and the the world (well Liga del Quilto or whatever their called) and we're not far off, we have shown we can match and surpass you head to head, we just need that extra bit of squad depth that you have to cope with injuries to crucial partnerships.

I'm just sick of the constant praise for Torres and Gerrard, what they do would not be possible without the massive contributions for Xabi, Mascherano, Aurelio (immense this season), Skrtel, Carragher, Reina, Kuyt etc

It's always the same, you ask the fans, the ones who watch all 90 Min's, and they always come up with other players. The media and commentators always pick up the odd bit of flair play and suddenly they're MOTM... :CONFUSE:

Well that was just awful.

I can see why Fergie said we were the better team. We had more shots, more possession, attacked more, more corners etc. The difference was that whilst we never really looked like putting anything away, Liverpool were far far more clinical and when we went a man down (nice one Vida) they took advantage of the situation.

We lost to a mistake, a penalty, a freekick, and a late goal when we had ten men and were attacking. It's not quite the ripping that the scoreline makes it look like, but I'm trying to be positive.

Hopefully Fergie will do what's needed to make sure that doesn't happen again for a long time and we can finish the season in style.

Worst home defeat for nearly 20 years.

On the other hand, looking at the goals we've conceded to your lot over the last 10 years or so, the vast majority have been from set-pieces and usually headers too.

Can anybody confirm with me that the CL draw for this season last 8 are open based? Anybody can face anybody?

Yes, it is.

Talking about Liverpool this season, I think most fans wanted a realistic title challenge, and progress. We've done both, and we have a right to be happy. We've led the league for long periods of times, beaten all the top teams, and I'd certainly say we've made a challenge of the whole thing.

You're still favorites, and it would require a miracle for us to win it, but you know, if we win all our games, we have 88 points. And I bet that would take us very close to you lot.

You're a better team, but we're very close.

Thats quite a fair and realistic assesment for your team Abhi...Thumbs Up.

We have no doubts that you are the superior team, whilst i hate you guys, you can't help but respect your acheivements over the last two decades.

You are fighting for Five trophies this season which is amazing. I'm jealous, I am. Your financial resources which I still can't shake from my mind that is the difference at the moment was gathered on your own credit, you maximise the corporate side of football just at the right time, when you started to dominate.

Nice to see how most of you on here are taking it though, I'm glad evo web has finally fostered a level of respest on these forums where football can be discussed intelligently and realistically, whilst still keeping the friendly banter.

No matter what, our two clubs have more history and aura around the world than anything else this country can offer.

Great post, Really Can't argue with the scoreline , and Fergie must have been on the red wine to say we deserved the win.
why the name change Peter?

United fans aren't all blinkered arrogant tits Nick. We were well and truley humbled yesterday and at Old Trafford as well.

I think that was the best thing that could happen to United. To fall on their arses.

They were probably feeling a little too good on their pedestal, thinking about winning a shitload of titles this year. Now that they fell back to earth, they no longer feel invincible and can start working at 110% again to prove themselves worthy.

I think this loss had to come at some point cuz it will test our ability to pick ourselves up. The only thing that bothers me is that it came against the worst possible team I could have hoped for.

EDIT
Basically what Airjoca said.

That's spot on. I don't think the media have helped the team either, with their constant hyping up of a possible quintuple. We haven't been playing to our maximum potential all season long, so hopefully this will make you play in first gear.

Last season we were unbeatable and left with a double. This time around we're not as good but we're still on course for a quintuple, all thanks to the other teams not pushing us so hard this year.
Hopefully this loss will help us change that.
