Manchester United Thread

Rooney is being carefully watched and won't be risked against Derby. That boy is our heartbeat, but certainly stays injured a chunk. He's played a fair bit less than Tevez this year, for perspective...

Hopefully we will have him back for the fulham game, its good they havent rushed him, the rooney/ronaldo/berba trio was looking pretty strong before he got injured, keeping him fit is vital for us in the run in..

No I dont think many 1st team players will play Vs derby, SAF should use sunday as a warm up to carling cup final..

I think we will, dont think we have another game till the following weekend? If so we'll probably lineup a pretty strong lineup

Still think it will be a mixed bag of starters and fringe players.

---------Foster---------
Brown--Vidic--Evans--Evra
Nani--Fletcher-Scholes--Ronaldo
--------Welbeck--Tevez------

Brilliant performance today. And we werent even playing a striker but instead we had 4 wingers out there.
Some of the link up between Giggs and Ronaldo was great.

 Ronnies Flag Celebration

We really are doing well! Inter is going to be a tough game, As long as we dont concede 3 and can manage a away goal I'll take that to OT. :))

That was a really good rotational exercise and we won comfortably.
Fletcher and Gibson looked good playing alongside each other and the latter seems to be a confidence-type of player.Really played well, spraying 30 yarders with ease, holding off his markers and laying off simple passes too.His goal was his reward after that splendid shift he puts in for Carrick.

How confident was Rafael? This kid is simply awesome. He puts most other established fullbacks in the backseat.

Sublime goal from Welbeck too, maybe he learnt a thing or two from Wazza in training.

Its Fulham next at OT...Roll on Wednesday.

Rafael was OK but he made Gary Teale look like Lionel Messi at times. Gibson and Giggs were the standout performers. The fans were great, never stopped singing.

I thought Nani played better than he has done, wasn't as selfish on the ball and made good use of it when he had it. Kind of dropped off in the 2nd half though.

This next few weeks are gonna be huge for us, last night a good sign that the team are starting to click.

Watched the Milan derby, Inter looked good but pretty vulnerable at the back, which was suprising..

@ Vann - I thought so too. Before Adriano's first goal I was really unimpressed with Inter, Milan were one or two touches away from goals a few times. But then out of nowhere it's 2-0. A good lesson to us.

Was it just me or did the pace seem a lot slower than the prem? I wonder if we'd have the energy to run at them for a full match, because I don't think they could keep up if we did. Play with Park, Anderson, Tevez, Rooney, Fletcher and Nani all out there hastling them - I'm not convinced they'd know how to deal with it :)

Anderson wont make it in time, Park Tevez and Rooney I agree with. Maicon VS Evra is going to be key IMO, Both play big parts of there teams attacks and the one which gets the other to start chasing him will probably win.

Im looking forward to it but another part of me thinks were going to head out and with it being at the San Siro I have bad memories of us there (06/07 was extremely hard to take)

We definitely wont be afforded the same luck Liverpool got last year facing Inter and with Mourinho in charge this is all a different proposition.

For me big difference from last year is Ronaldo's form and no Hargreaves. That said, barring any new injuries, we'll be able to play a very strong team at the San Siro, most likely a 4-3-3 with Fletch, Carrick and Scholsey in the middle supporting Berba, Ronaldo and Rooney. Giggsy/Tevez to be used as needed.

Big advantage I see for Inter is that they're so far ahead in the league they can rest a lot of players leading up to the games, whereas we've got crucial games all over the place. Our own fault for having such a crap season start, but could make the difference.

it's an elimination round match, so it's basically impossible to tell what's going to happen.
form, luck, confidence will play a big role as usual.

anyhow, having said that, inter fans should be way more worried than u guys.

personel-wise inter and man utd are both amazing teams with a good share of world class players in many roles.

but considering the quality of the football played by them (and when i say "quality" i'm not referring to how attractive their football is, or how offensive, or other silly points like theese... i'm referring to the overall quality of the football expressed by the teams) man utd is just on a different class.

the understanding between the players on the pitch, the contribution of the offensive players to the defensive phase, the fluency of the game, the solidity of the tactical imprint.....
under all theese point of views, man utd is just a better team than inter.

inter is definitely a hell of a team, but it's a team built to win championships, not cups. it relies mostly on its physical strenght, wich is a strategy that usually pays good dividends in championships competition.... but cups competitions are something different.

and one last point. to be honest, this inter is not stronger than last season's inter. actually is nowhere near as good as last season's inter.
the 4-3-3 experiment was a disaster, and now mourinho is slowly getting back to mancini's system (even though he'll never admit it). but the overall quality of the football is way poorer than last year.
besides mourinho lost vieira for most of the season and muntari took its place... with all the respect for muntari, this is a huge step behind.
cruz isn't scoring as many goals as last season, adriano still didn't step up, mancini is playing less (and worse) than he used to play in roma and maxwell (wich was a great asset last season) is facing a bad form period.

last season's inter was a much better oiled machine than the current team.
obviously those of u who don't follow serie a will think about the liverpool cl double leg, and tend to base your opinion on those 2 performances.
but those 2 matches won't give u a correct idea of that team. mancini faced liverpool with a brand new defense (as the starting cbs were all injured, stankovic was just recovering from an injury and his form was horrible, ibra was playing despite a serious knee tendon injury (the same kind of injury that messed up kaka last season).
to sum up, inter wasn't able to express at all its qualities in those 2 matches.

today inter is still a top class team, but its football is nowhere near as fluent as it used to be last season... and they already made many false steps this season (much more than man utd).

today's inter is like an alfa romeo. when it's in the right mood it can be great... but pretty often it's stuck in the garage with the engine broken. it's not consistent. consistency doesn't mean anything in champions league of course.....but consistency effects confidence.... and confidence is vital in this competition.

one last point. inter's defensive line is just amazing. definitely among the 3 best defensive line in europe. but it's also pretty "specialized". against a "conventional" attack this is a great defence (even though, even under this point of view, last season inter was way better).
but against an unconventional, extremely mobile attack as man utd's one, that world class defence might have some serious problems.

obvioulsy, as i said before, it's impossible to tell wich team will go through the next round.... but i think it will be much harder for chelsea and arsenal to beat juve and roma than for man utd to beat inter. :BYE:

Thanks for the well-structured points Lo Zio, very interesting.

I think United's greatest strength lies in their ability to create chances, and their biggest weakness of this season has been taking them. We have a very solid back 4, or what could easily be thought of us as a back 6. We rely on the top 4 playing with great understanding and flexiblity, which they do, but unfortunately none of them (assuming Berba/Rooney/Ronaldo/Park) are reliable at sticking the ball in the net.

As you say, CL is a cup game, and anything can happen. I just worry that we're going to miss the chances that come our way, as that's what our season has been like.
