Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

I though it was a smart game by United. SAF knew Roma's strengh was in the midfield so he countered with Scholes, Anderson and Carrick, and then Hargreaves, with help by Park and Rooney.

More than deserved. You score you win, that's it.

Wasn't much of a match, but it was a much better than I expected.
The first leg of a CL game is usually like this. Nobody wants to make a mistake.

Ronaldo is improving on the important games. He came out of nowhere on that goal.

Maybe he can show that for the national side.

Woooooooooooooohooooooooooo!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

I agree with Peter, Roma built well but were lacking a cutting edge in the box.

I thought Scholes and Carrick were brilliant in the middle though. They did what they had to do, passed it well and covered for 90 minutes.
Rio was great at the back, making several key interceptions and he was a great leader (I think he should be captain over Giggs). Park's performance was a nice surprise, he never stopped all night and the assist for Rooney's goal was something another player may not have bothered to get to.
Rooney and Ronaldo were both ok, not outstanding but definitely effective.

All that's needed now is a similar team performance back at Old Trafford and that should see them through.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Ronaldo should've scored a hat-trick. :)

Man United played like an Italian team tonight, they gave Roma a taste of Italian poison...

Yeah, but I still was far from comfortable with conceeding that much possession. Watching Brown just stand on the spot as the ball floated over him with the Roma player coming in for the volley...we just can't defend well enough for 90 mins to play like that.

Rio was absolutely outstanding. Man on of the match without a doubt.
Ronaldo wasn't that poor in the first half, rather fouled every single time he touched the ball, which kind of limits him. His header was pretty tasty though. In the slow motion replay it looks like he's in real time :)

Professional but not great. Best we could have hoped for as we once again played with little energy away in Europe.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Im surprised with the reaction from you lot, WOW, ok it wasn't the performance of the century but we beat a very good Roma side who were going to be extra cautious after last year 2-0. now for me thats an amazing result most expected us to lose and get an away goal but that wasn't the case we did a professional job on them and it worked wonder's. need (IMO) 1 goal at home to kill the tie and its happy days :)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Not over yet, anyway. Roma look a fantastic side and if their attack comes off, they are capable of scoring goals at OT. It takes a lot of pressure off the next game, but I hope we don't just sit back.

I can't see us sitting back at OT.

Once we got a few people running at their defence we looked very menacing. It's without doubt we'll attack far more at home.

Another seven please? :w00t:

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

It will be a different Roma team at OT..

With a few key players back hopefully.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

must of watch a different game then me...manutd sat back w/ led in their trunks no movement at all. If Ronaldo wasn`t on the pitch to dance w/ the ball this game would of look so one-sided. I hope he never leaves United cause they will be dull. Manutd plays effective football while chels plays result football and L`pool nevermind

Yeah definitely agree,if Chelsea would have played like that ,the Chelsea Thread would be full of" what a boring team chelsea is,how can you pay 40£ to watch this team play,i almost fall asleep when watching this game bla blabla..."
as you said i just hope for you this guy never leaves/injured ...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Let's hope the result of Vida's scan today isn't too serious.

Think we played effectively, though were a bit lucky tbh with Roma squandering several good chances, but then you need a bit of luck sometimes ;))
Thought Rio was immense again last night, and Hargreaves was superb when he came on. Scholes was a bit restricted as he had 2 men on him whenever he got the ball, but still managed to play his game.
And what a save by VDS!

We're halfway there but we still have a job to do in the second leg.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

YEEEEEAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! (Like Joe Swanson from Family Guy)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Roma had an extremely poor defence and no finishing at all. I was surprised to see Panucchi missing that shot. how can you miss that!! ManU just played their normal game. They were relaxed n playing and scored 2 goals. Well obviously its ManU vs. Barca in the semis. I dont think Roma can get anything at OT even if they get Totti.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Tie well and truly over. I've never seen Serie A so poor and that goes for AC, Inter and Roma. I remember when they were formidable to face.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

i have to say i really disagree with most of u guys....
u lot seem to be disappointed by the performance, while actually this was probably one of the best matches manchester played in the last 2 seasons!!!!!!

i know most of the fan today (the so called, "playstation generation") think that barcelona is a team,, they would like to see 11 cristiano ronaldos playing for their team, even in defence; they think football is all about pace and that u can establish how good is a team just by looking how many shots on goal the team does in a match....
the same fans who think that brazil is a hell of a team, or that italy is just a "solid" (i love this word ) defensive team..... the same ones who still don't realise why england still doesn't play on the same level of the "big guys".... the same ones who think that "the premiership is the best league in tha world.... POWAAAA!! .

nontheless, the more u watch\play football, the more u learn about the game... so it should be time to grow up, to get rid of theese funny stereotypes, and start reading a game properly.

there's no glory in beating a non-existing roma 7-1 or in destroying aston villa or newcastle, by scoring loads of goals.... theese matches don't prove anything, except that u can play good football, when your opponents kindly let u do whatever u want to do.

yesterday instead was different. u played against a football team, which was trying to play football, as much as u. u were playing the away leg of a quarter final, but still u couldn't notice any kind of pressure on the players. no hurry, no worries, they were just focused on their gameplan (wich was absolutely PERFECT!) and they applied it with an impressive coolenss and accuracy.

first of all, yesterday man utd didn't sit back at all! at the end of the match they had 12 shots (exactly as as much as roma's shots). they weren't defensive, neither boring; they were aware they were playing against one of the most dangerous teams europe, in one of the most passionate stadia in europe, and played EXACTLY the football they had to play; letting roma unleash their fury, trying to keep taddei and mancini out of the game, looking for a chance to hurt them, waiting the right moment to hit, and then taking advantage of some key situations (like the 2nd goal).

u might get more excited by watching manchester destroying aston villa, but the truth is that that's not real football.... yesterday manchester played against a team wich is almost on the same level, on their turf. if u did expect them to play the same football they play in premiership, then u're fools. it would have been a disgraceful loss for manchester.... but of course sir alex is not silly, he knows the game, he knows roma, and he knew he had to try something different to get a result.

yesterday sir alex proved that an english team can play a clever football. that also the premiership players can play keeping their heads up, looking at the pitch and at their teammates (instead of playing looking down at the ball between their own foot).
yesterday sir alex proved that english teams don't always played that "stupid fooball" (i know, Don Domenico's statement was a bit harsh, but still quite appropriate, u must admit).... he proved that english football is not just "get the ball and run as fast as u can towards the goal" or "get either the ball or the opponent's leg and then hoof the ball for the striker"....

so shall we say yesterday manchester played the italian way? Yes i do think so..... and for those u didn't realise it, this is a huge compliment.
u were almost perfect yesterday.... u were also a bit lucky, that's for sure.... roma wasted a lot of chances (perrotta was badly missed by roma yesterday), but this doesn't decry manchester's defensive performance, wich was simply stunning. trouble is, that u just can't nullify roma's attack, it's impossible to truly control or contain them, when they start playing their football.

so hats off to manchester for the football your team played and the personality the red devils showed yesterday :applaud::TU:

congrats lads ;))

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

the same ones who think that "the premiership is the best league in tha world.... POWAAAA!! .
 That gave me a good laugh.

Great post by the way.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

4 italian teams came to england ac milan . inter milan, fiorentina and as roma, they all failed to score!! yeh ive said all along that the serie a is getting weaker and weaker this match against roma was a stroll in the park! so easy it was boring! ronaldo and rooney rule the roost, united to win the champions league again, cant see any one stopping this all round power house class outfit!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

We did very well. The discipline was top notch and the work-rate was immense. We stuck together and the victory was well deserved.Thumping header by Cristiano "Who Else" Ronaldo...I think I have never seen another winger from my generation with aerial ability like Ronaldo's.

I agree with some here that the tie is truly over now.Roma have to score 2 to drag the tie into extra time in the second leg at OT or have to score 3 goals or more to end it in 90 minutes...That too could change if we score a goal!

Honestly I cannot see that happening to us and lets prepare for FC Barcelona! This season has to be by far our best season in the cL since we won it back in 1999...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

I can't BELIEVE some of you are moaning about last night's performance. It was the best and composed away European performance I've seen this season from United! The defence was immense and we took our chances when they were presented.

VERY very happy about last night's result - I would of took a 1-1 or even a 2-1 defeat but to win 2-0! I can't see Roma scoring two and keeping us out at Old Trafford either.

:)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Didn't watch the match really, just had it on in the background and watched occasionally, but from what I seen it was a pretty good performance. Roma definately had chances but Utd took theirs, and it was over after the second goal.

Looking promising, I'd be VERY VERY surprised if you don't go through.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Must say, that was one of the most efficient performances by United I've seen in a long time. Not pretty, but it got the job done.

It was very similar to how we approached the Inter game, though without the 2 goal lead. Roma would have converted their chances, but they never did, and United took their opportunities when they came.

And dear god, that was a monster of header by Ronaldo. Fuckin hell, never knew where he came from!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Tie well and truly over. I've never seen Serie A so poor and that goes for AC, Inter and Roma. I remember when they were formidable to face.

you must have never watched inter or roma play all year... roma have been playing beatiful football all year.. and inter have been winning. roma is has anad always will be totti's team. it was huge for them to be missing him. I agree with you about ac milan but your dead wrong about inter and roma

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

yeh ive said all along that the serie a is getting weaker and weaker

geting a bit ahead of yourself there...Yeah the "Top Four"
of the EPL are getting stronger and stronger...

Things go around in cycles...

And gomito while Inter have been great in the league(despite the dip)
they are still not quite there in Europe.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

 That gave me a good laugh.

Great post by the way.

i was on "jeremy clarkson-mode" there :DD
i guess i should stop watching top gear

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

Well that sets up a nice convenient excuse for you lot if Utd win it...

:applause: Just what I was thinking mate. But if L'pool win it I'm sure he'll quickly retract that statement. ;)

Antred - Just a question mate. After ALL of our results you seem to think the refs or opposing teams CONSTANTLY help us? You can't seem to say "United were unstoppable today." It's always "The opposition just bow down for United" or "The ref was on their side."

You can only beat what's put in front of you and 3-0 against Liverpool & 2-0 away at Roma isn't just a coincidence mate. :)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

If Lpool had played Roma they would have had a more difficult time then they had against Inter imo

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

You can only beat what's in front of you, very true. We've said the same when Inter had players sent off and everyone said we only won because Inter had ten men.

The Liverpool game could've been a very different story had Masch not been sent off. And Roma could've put a good few past you last night had they had a bit more luck.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

And Roma could've put a good few past you last night had they had a bit more luck.

...and if my Aunty had bollocks she'd be called Pete.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread, 5 points clear + 7 games left = 10th Prem T

I doubt it. The way Roma were attacking would suit us just perfectly IMO.

Anyways, we will never know.

United beat a very good Roma side 2-0, and as I said, I think this was their best European performance in a long time.
