Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I thought Neville did well last night. He might not be the best at defending, but he delivered some old school crosses there.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I thought Nani started to do well later on in the game. I think the boy doesn't get enough chances and with everyone "against" him when he plays, thats a lot of pressure for the young lad. I still have faith in him and Anderson.

Gary Neville is more like Scholes now where they still have their areas of brilliance, yet their overall game is starting to decline fast. The only one that still has it (or covers his weaker sides more effectively) is Giggs. I sometimes get frustrated seeing Scholes play now with poor decisions and not having it anymore in his legs.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

While I agree in some matches, Scholes was probably our best player against CSKA. He's definitely a worthwhile squad player, against weaker teams he can control the match.

But you're right, imo all three of them aren't that useful against the world's best (last year's Giggs show at Chelsea aside). But Fergie doesn't trust our younger players, so we're stuck with them.

I hope that Sunday's midfield will include Fletch, Carrick and Anderson, but I'm guessing one of them will miss out for Giggsy. Tbh I think we're going to get spanked at the Bridge. Haven't felt so sure of a loss in at least a few years...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I thought we had a better chance of beating Barca in the final last year going into that game.
This has "hammering" written all over it.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

If we're willing to sacrifice Berba for a 5 man midfield we should be able to get a draw. We always seem to have strange lineups & tactics in big games so it's possible...(though we never seem to learn to not have Evra trying to mark Drogba on set pieces)

Kind of expecting to see:

-------------VDS
O'Shea--Brown--Vidic/Evans--Evra
--Carrick--Fletcher--Anderson
Valencia------------------Giggs
-----------Rooney

The only problem with that lineup is if our midfield get tired we won't be able to bring Ando on...

I'm also expecting a tonking, but trying to put a positive spin on things!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I'm another in the tonking camp.

It's horrilble to feel this way considering we're the champions, but our midfield is gonna get overrun and if we play 4-5-1 we'll not score either.

whats with all the pessimism??

chelsea are good enough to beat anyone on their day, fair enough...

okay we had an off day v lfc but I fancy us to get a result..

I'm 100% behind your formation here, mate. This just might be the best way to go on sunday. As for the midfield issue, we can always play Giggs where you have Anderson listed and then have Nani on the left wing. Or maybe even go with what you have but bring Nani on later for Anderson while Giggs drops back into midfield, instead of having to bring Anderson on later.

if we play 4-5-1 we'll not score either.
Its early in the season, its Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are on fire, and we havent reached our peak yet. I'd take a draw with a huge grin on my face.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think its the "lets say we have no hope" theory where in some way it will affect the performance instead of saying we'll own them. :))

I think we should go 4-3-3 which is a given but it then comes down to who you should pick. Midfield IMO Should be Fletcher, Carrick and + one of Anderson/Giggs(Depending on if you play Giggs further forward).

This is where it gets more difficult. Right, Well Rooney's got to play. I think he should be used out wide instead of through the middle. The reason for that is Hold up play, I have high hopes for Obertan in the future when we use this formation. he's more of a "Forward" than Valencia (Who IMO isn't suited to the 4-3-3 and is more of a traditional winger) and would brings that Aerial threat with the possibility of switching from Right, Left or through the middle. Valencia can't do any of that. Nani can switch flanks but doesn't bring any aerial threat. So with it being to soon for Obertan I'd stick with Berba through the middle.

Than its down to Nani or Giggs....Yeh doesn't need discussing whose going to get the start out of those two.

So I reckon we'll probably line-up like this.

------------VDS-------------
-O'Shea--Evans--Vidic--Evra--
------Fletcher-Carrick-----
----------Anderson--------
Rooney----Berbatov----Giggs-

The problem with this line-up is that it'll automatically switch back to a 4-4-2 with Fletcher on the right, Carrick/Anderson in the middle, Giggs to the left. Reason being Rooney won't stay right as he'll want to move into the middle.

We've had this before where Anderson might move to the left (which is ok imo), but the Fletcher on the right isn't that great. He's way better in the center than on the right.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

For some reason Anderson is always awful on the left. Despite having all of the skills you'd think he'd need, he always puts in a stinker out wide. Fletch can be alright out there.

Fergie always seems to try something different in the big games lately, so I kind of expect a surprise. Guess we'll see.

I think it's going to be a humbling 3-0. But, that will be the low point of the season, and we can move onwards and upwards... ! (it is worth remembering that Chelsea have had and do still have by far the best first XI and best squad in the league - they should beat us!)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I hope Sir Alex has got something up his sleeve tonight. We need to get around Chelsea's rigid diamond midfield and play through the flanks.I hope he deploys the 4-3-3 today to nullify Chelsea.

-----------------------------------------VDS---------------------------------------
-----O'Shea-----------Brown--------------Evans------------------Evra-----
--------------------------------------Carrick-------------------------------------
------------------Fletcher-----------------------Anderson-------------------
---Valencia--------------------------------------------------------Rooney---
-------------------------------------Berbatov----------------------------------

We need energy and constant harrasment so Fletch and Ando will provide that with Carrick as the insurance man behind them.
Valencia and Rooney as inside forwards to counter through the flanks and cut in.
Berba will tire out and frustrate Carvalho and Terry....then Owen could come in a poach the loose balls.
Damn,I've been playing too much FM2010........

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think it's definitely gonna have to be something like that, switching between 3 and 5 in midfield depending on if we have the ball or not.

Dunno how Berba's gonna tire out their defence though, he doesn't move :P

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think we'll go 4-3-3 too but Fergie often surprises us with tactics in the big games so we'll have to wait and see.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Just a few hours to go before the Man U V Chelsea begins.

Hoping to see Man U win it.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Ay, For some reason I can see a 4-4-2, with one of the wingers tucking in at times to make it a 3.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

No Berba but Vidic makes the bench. And yes we've gone 4-3-3 with Rooney, Giggs and Valencia up front and Carrick, Fletch and Ando in midfield.
Should be good.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Fuck. No Berbaskills? No Berbahope :((

(I don't really think that, CMON UNITED)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Really proud of our performance. Anyone who still thinks that referees favour United seriously need to wake up. That was the most one-sided refereeing performance i've ever seen in a big game. It wasn't even incompetence, it was biased to the point of humour.

1. Valencia = pulled down by Terry. Nothing.
2. Rooney through one on one, onside by at least a foot. Offside.
3. Stopping play for the hard man John Terry who got 'winded', after Cheslea finished their attack, while United were countering. And then letting him on 1 second later.
4. The free kick, erm, how much more clearly does one have to win the ball.
5. The goal, that'll be the touch off the offside player then? No, oh ok.
6. Handball by Lampard, clear as you like, hand above head. No call? Oh. ok.
7. 'Minimum of 5 added minutes'. 1 substitution during added time. Whistle blown at 95:01.

It wasn't a dirty game at all, really good one. But I'm 100% sure that Martin Atkinson is either pissed at SAF for his comments earlier in the season (and fair enough, Fergie was well out of line) or was swayed by the crowd. Every single decision went against us. And in a game that close, the referee was the difference between the teams.

And that should annoy everyone.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Well that's annoying.

Someone swap shirts with the ref to see if he's got blue underneath?

Really happy with the performance though, for once this season we actually looked like we gave a shit. For once in a Chelsea game our midfield was better than theirs, but ah well, we'll still win the league, I'm sure of it.

Obertan needs more minutes.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah agree with that Ryan, we played well and were unlucky not to get a draw, I wouldnt say we deserved to win it was very tight.

It's almost like SAF is being goaded into making comments about referees. Every week we get some fucking awful decision against us, yet 'Fergie time' still gets brought up every time they dare to offer more than 3 minutes of injury time. Drogba must have been on his arse for about 4 minutes himself, then there's all the other stuff during the game and then the substitution during added time and yet he blows on 95:01.

About that, Evans was lucky to stay on the pitch, especially when he knocked Carvalho over too, so I suppose we did have one thing go our way.

I'll be interested to hear what SAF says after the match about the officiating. Shame cos it was a pretty good game otherwise.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah, the encouraging thing was that we outplayed them, in their backyard. Best I can recall us playing at the Bridge for absolutely years. Cheslea really weren't that impressive.

As I said when he made the comments, Fergie really has ruined our chances with his comments about Riley. Martin Atkinson shouldn't get a United game again for a while imo. The Evra/Ballack decision in the Charity Shield and then the free kick tonight were two match-defining moments. That he get wrong.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Evans is lucky that he got to stay on the pitch, that kick on Drogba wasn't good added with the knock on Carvalho.

But either way I was happy with the midfield this game, the D was more solid than before. Rooney tried really hard to pressure their defense, but wasn't enough. Anderson did quite nicely in my opinion...Valencia needs to work on his shots.

The calls...well, i felt it wasn't too one-sided, but many things should've been called for a foul at least.

Obertan definitly needs more minutes for him to shine.

And bring it back to the first half, if Rooney or Valencia were more willing to pass, we might've gone one up already (Rooney could've passed to Anderson instead of the deflected shot. Valencia took a wild attempt when O'shea was all open down the flank for a nice cross)

Overall, expected a lost already...and thought we were close to tieing it, so...can't say i'm happy...but i'm not as sad as I normally would be after a lost.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Ref had a poor game, not just with our decisions but a couple of decisions that should have gone Chelsea's way.

Really encouraging performance though, especially compared to how limp we looked in our last "big 4" match.

Chelsea were made to look very ordinary by our side...in their own backyard.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I've also just seen a replay of the free kick, if you're curious how John Terry got so free for his header, watch what Drogba does to his marker Wes Brown. Just grabs his arms and pulls him to the ground.

Whatever, if we play like that week-in, week out we'll still win the league. Great performance.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Hate games like that, Atleast the Liverpool loss we played shit and deserved it. fair enough but today we were the better side and if it weren't for some bad calls by the ref and us lacking a genuine goal threat we'd have won.

We were being to intricate around the box I thought. Was just hoping for someone from around 14 yards just putting their foot through it FFS!.

Valencia dare I say gave Cole more problems than Ronaldo has in recent times. I think the directness helps him but fuck me we miss the goal threat he brought.

Obertan should have came on earlier IMO for Giggs. He would have brought something different.

Overall pretty pissed but we played well.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Agree with pretty much everything you guys have said. Very proud of our performance today. I had a bit of doubt about how we'd handle big games like this in the post-Ronaldo era but this game brought back some faith for me. I mean, fair play to Chelsea. They deserve to be top of the table right now. But if we had played like this against Liverpool, we would have walked away with the points.
