Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

it is absolutely impossible for man utd to play milan's football, exactly as it would be absolutely impossible for milan to play man utd's football.
the tactical imprint is different, the interpreters are different.

having a playmaker a la pirlo is great.... but the point is that, since zidane retired, nobody in the world has the vision and the touch pirlo has.
it would be impossible for carrick to absolve pirlo's duties on the pitch, coz he couldn't. Carrick is a hell of a player but is a different kind of player. Carrick is more an "all around midfielder" than pirlo. he can hold and "guide" the midfield better than him. he also has some playmaking abilities. but there are many kind of playmakers, and he's more a playmaker a la makelele (or a la pizarro or a la ledesma...), as Plan m wisely pointed out.

the same way scholes, hargraves and anderson are very, very different from their milanese counterparts (gattuso, ambrosini and seedorf). they have different strong and weak sides. ambrosini could never have the same impact scholes has into the game and scholes could never do what ambrosini usually does...

and the same goes upfront. your attacking trio is completely different from the milan's trio. rooney and tevez haven't the same killer instinct gila and inzaghi have when they're into the box. On the other side, inzaghi and gila haven't the same unpredictability and mobility rooney and tevez have. inzaghi and gilardino couldn't switch their position continuously, as rooney and tevez usually do. they are "benchmark players" who hold their spot and look for support from the upcoming midfielders... while tevez and rooney continuously move along the opponent's defensive line and move backwards too, to support the midfield (exactly the opposite of milan's fowards).
the only players who absolve almost the same duties on the pitch are kakà and cristiano ronaldo.

u guys have a hell of a team... a better team than milan imo (and i think u were stronger than milan last year too). but u can't play milan's football.
and honestly i don't see why u should play milan's football, as your football looks awesome to me :)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

Good post Lo Zio (as always my friend.) :)

I agree, we will never play football like Milan - we play with pace, strength and agility. We use the wings a lot too. As for Scholes, he never breaks sweat but orchestrates the midfield with genius passes. He can slow the game down when we are winning and we always look a better team with him in the middle. He scores some stunning goals too!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

The styles of play are completely different.
No disrespect, but I couldn't see Milan playing at break neck pace for 90mins. Neither would United play to a strict formation - part of our game is having several attacking players who can play anywhere around the pitch. Milan's attackers rely on people like Pirlo to supply them with chances, whereas we're happy to come deep or move to the wing and either take players on or play in someone else.
Milan seem more comfortable picking teams off by passing it around, and have a clinical striker finish a move.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

Great posts Lo Zio and jj710...the milan comparisons is just a big example.

My point is,I dont feel we were tactically astute during big games...its like we just have a go at it without any real tactics and counter tactics...just my two cents.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

You're right Phrase, we really need to step it up in Europe now (which I think we have done this season, we hammered our group.) When we won the Champions League in '99, we didn't fear teams even when we went away (Juventus being a great example.) We need get into that frame of mind again - we should go to Lyon wanting to score more than one goal because that kills the tie - not many teams score a lot of goals at Old Trafford and if they do, we usually score more so we have that area covered.

It's really exciting times for Man United supporters again in my opinion; we have one of if not the best players in the world, Rooney and Tevez look dangerous together, Scholes is back, Hargreaves is playing out of his skin and the Rio/Vidic partnership is simply solid.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

we have one of if not the best players in the world

The problem being...when was the last time he did anything against a properly competitive team?

He got positively destroyed by Gattuso last year, and he hasn't done anything against either Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal this year...

EDIT: Fucking hell, pick that one out.

Okay, so he can't do it against the top teams, but christ almighty hes good against the lesser ones...

thanks guys :)
Phrase i see your points, and sure u know the man utd situation better than me...
anyway, talking about european cups matches, in CL teams all the teams (even the weakests sides) always tend impose their football, and even the more "conservative" teams usually are quite "impudent" and offensive (leaving nice spaces for counter attacks).
of course that's quite a generalization, as every match has his own history, but i think that an offensive strategy based on counter attack is (usually) the wisest choice in champions league.... and manchester utd has probably the best counter-attack football in europe, so...:)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

Yup, Ronaldo is a machine! And he can finally take decent free kicks.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

 This shows how good Ronaldo is as the first 3 posts our two Arsenal fans and a Liverpool one, Worlds Best?...common surely he's getting closer:D

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

An expected win really with ANOTHER brace from Ronaldo.Credits to Nani who had a decent game for picking Ronaldo out for his first goal.Has anybody here noticed that Nani takes great corner kicks?

Lets talk about the freekick shall we?...nahhh...its just another fluke, just ask James. :)

BACK ON TOP BITCHES!!!

umm he scored against arsenal and i think he had an assist... and if you hadnt noticed you get three points no matter which team you beat... you dont get 4 points for beating the arse. Also those games are always tight close affairs and there are not alot of goals to be scored.. for crying out loud i think oshea has more goals against arsenal and liverpool, then rooney and ronnie

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

He also kept two Liverpool players quiet during the Anfield game, as they were too busy watching his every move to contribute in any kind of attack.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

ok guys after Ronaldo fantastic game yesterday:applause::applause:,just wanted to know your thoughts about the fact you're maybe turning in a one man team,i mean if ronaldo gets injured (i really hope he doesn't)you are definitely not the same team; what do you think?

there is a talisman for every team...

ive got no problems with it...

personally i think rooney is just as if not more important to the team...

and i think our defence deserves the same credit...

agree with you here your defence has been fantastic so far and i just think Rio Ferdinand is as important as Ronaldo for your team

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

One man team, eleven man team, fuck, I don't care - we keep winning and in style, that's all that matters! :)

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

I learned from the Arsenal situation it has its ups and downs, i think the problem may be that players end up feeling in the shadow of Ronaldo who simply is on another level to everyone right now so he's cleary our main man but one man team? naa dont think so in the bigger games Rooney is the man for me and the defence is a huge plus

BACK ON TOP BITCHES!!!

Nani and Ronnie are telepathic at times I think. And christ, forgetting Ronaldo's free kick, did you see Nani's shot from about 40-45 yards out? He's got some shot on him that kid.

Getting back to Ronaldo's free kick, as Andy Gray said in commentary afterwards, you won't see a better free kick for a long time. No keeper in the world would have even seen that coming to be honest. David James' reaction afterwards summed it up. A smirk on his face, holds his hands up in a way that just says 'what can I do?'

Anderson really impressed me when he came on again, especially when he nearly scored, but the person he came on for, Scholes was my man of the match. Good to see him back.

Shame we only got two though eh lads? ;)

Good times :D

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

Simply genius. Simply brilliant. Simply Ronaldo.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

I just hope this boy plays like that in Euro2008 because in National Team he doesn't play nothing comparing with his performance at Manchester United.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

Ronaldo really seems to have developed his technique for taking free kicks. He couldn't score them like this last few seasons, but it's obvious he's worked very hard on this. Well done to him.

@The_Special_One, I think that true for most players who play in the Premiership. Gerrard, Rooney, Ronaldo etc etc never perform on the international stage.

And who is that bird in your avatar? :freak:

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread .

Michael Owen is the only player I can think of who performs better for England than his club.

As for our best player this season, Ronny is obviously first choice but Rio Ferdinand is looking like one of the best defenders around at the moment.
