MAG : PS3

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

The more I think about the game the more excited for it I get.

The way everyone links together so if 1 group manages to achieve their objective of protecting a bridge for a set amount of time tanks will cross the bridge and provide support to a squad across the other side of the battlefield. And as each squad achieves or fails their goals the entire battle field will change to reflect.

Then you have the commander role looking over the entire map giving squads updates on how everyone else is doing, calling in air strikes or support drops. So one squads role on one side of the map may be to secure a radar tower while the defending guys have to stop them, whichever team gain controls will provide the rest of their team with some extra support like airstrikes and then the commander can use them.

And this is just on 1 map in 1 single game. When you throw in the other maps in the other games and the 3 factions all fighting to control each section of the map on the world for world domination. Each day you can log in and see how the faction you are part of has faired and then join a map where your team are trying to take over.

The potential is huge.

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

Say your squad achieves your particular mission, will you be able to go on to another part of the map and assist elsewhere?

I don't think they've revealed that yet.

The 2 options are that either you do move onto another goal on the map or you become a spectator on the map watching how your other team mates are getting on and watching how your victory or failure affects everyone else.

Or maybe a third option could be if your team wins you go into the reserve pile and if another squad fail a task your team can be selected to have another go at it against the same defender. So the battle keeps going until one factions resources have emptied.

The IGN preview has made me drool...

Now, what's interesting about this battle is that it is ongoing. Even when you're not playing, other people are and your faction could be losing or gaining ground in this never-ending conflict. When you are playing, there's going to be a hierarchy on the battlefield, and you'll need to know because everything that's happening out there -- every explosion, every plane that flies over your head, every command you receive -- is happening because of something a player did; nothing is pre-determined effect thrown in for the hell of it. When you hear an explosion in the distance, that's happening because someone somewhere just blew something up.

Anyway, starting from the bottom, you'll be a part of an eight-person squad when you jump into MAG. There, you'll have a squad-leader based on experience. That eight-person squad is part of the 32-man platoon. There, there's a platoon leader. That platoon is part of the 128-person army that's ruled by the one officer in command. All of these leaders will be issuing orders to their troops in terms of objectives and things that need to happen on the battlefield.

If taking orders from an 11-year-old who stayed home all weekend and leveled up to be in charge doesn't sound like fun, you're welcome to run wild and do whatever you want in MAG, but sticking with your squad and working towards objectives gives you more experience points than simply going Solid Snake and trying to bring down the world by yourself. Having one of these rank privileges is also going to come with a set of unique leadership abilities. Ranked-up folks can hand out FRAGO assignments (fragmented orders or little missions that are building toward a larger goal), run faster, call in tactical strikes such as mortars and gas bombardments, and use strategic maneuvers such as satellite sweeps that reveal all enemies for a few seconds.

After getting killed in this standoff a few times and coming back, an objective popped up on my screen that was set by one of my superior officers in the field. I looked to the spot on my radar, came to a yellow column of light, and discovered I was out in front of one of the garages holding the prototype vehicle the Raven guys were after. I stood guard, capped a few stragglers who were making their way towards the objective, and watched as I raked in a massive amount of XP. The totals only got higher when my squadron leader showed up and fought alongside me. This proximity popped up on my screen as a "Leadership Bonus" icon so that I knew we were still close enough to work as a team and get me some goodies.

Now, I can see where I wouldn't want to hang around and take orders from someone, but seeing that bonus tag pop up on my screen was pretty enticing. When the leader moved on to take on some guys attempting to bum rush some stairs in the open, airy base we were playing in, I found myself sticking with the unknown leader just so I could keep reaping the benefits of his presence.

I hope it's not like KZ 2 where you miss a week and everyone's got super weapons and armour and you sticking 10 shots an and getting nothing while they 1 shot kill you...

I agree, its sounding fantastic. My only concern at the mo (besides the whole generic FPS of it all), is that the battle is 'ongoing'... virtually meaning no matter how you do, in reality nobody will 'win'.

Would be better if the devs set challenges on the map each week/month. So at the end of that time, each faction knows whether it 'won' or 'lost'. Even just rotate them, so week 1 is 'Gain control of the front line and hold it for 2 days', week 2 could be 'Escort the VIP/Object to X on the map and defend it for 2 days' etc.

Big bonuses could be given to all team members on the winning team.

At the moment, I cannot see myself being interested just dipping in and out to earn XP knowing in reality my actions aren't helping my team.

There is probably a shit load more about the modes that havent been exposed yet, so it could be more interesting than I imagine at the moment...

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

Yeah I agree about having a set goal. Maybe making it so once a map has been won by a faction X amount of times it becomes locked to their faction for the rest of that week and at the end of the week the MAG website can report on which factions owned which parts of the world. Then when the next week starts that faction will be defending those sections against the other 2 factions.

Am I the only one getting alot of Satis-faction when the word faction is written down?!

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

Good news people. I just saw the MAG developer Q&A with Zipper Interactive over at the PlayStation Blog and they have confirmed that MAG will NOT have a subscription charge. It will be free apart from the cost of the game like Warhawk and other multiplayer only titles. (£39.99 or whatever it ends up being). Looks set to be another PS3 must have. Also expect a public beta soon, as in E3 soon hopefully. :)

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

Just like anyone can say WOW cost £30 a month to play? ;)

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

innit. simply sounds awsome. just hoping the controls are better then killzone 2

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

Well the ign preview mentions that the controls took a while to get used to - you can't just throw a grenade you have to switch to it and then press fire to pull the pin and there is no melee weapon in the game so you have to switch the the knife and then attack. Which makes split second melee's impossible.

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

i hardly use melee's. all im interested is the movement and response times on teh control pad with the movement of teh character.

in killzone 2 it was too difficult for me to aim and shoot

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

Great news that it's free...apart from buying it originally. The idea is good but if the controls are crap then it's going to be tough to play.

Re: MAG (Massive Action Game), PS3

Yeah but you pay £30 a month for a game so you don't count.
i dont pay £30 a month for a game , what are you smoking? i have never played world of warcraft before. calm down on the weed mate
