Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Torres is better.

Gerrard's lack of a brilliant "footballing brain" stops him from being as good as not only Torres, but Kaka, Messi, Ronaldo etc.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Torres is very similar to Ronaldo IMO but maybe just not as good :))

Similar in what sense? Other than the ability to score lots of goals and in different ways I dont see many of the same traits between them. Unless you mean they are of around the same 'quality' (ie 90+ out of 100), in which case I'd agree. Torres seems quite injury prone and this makes it harder to compare.

Gerrard has A LOT of similar traits to Ronaldo though IMO.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Gerrard has great mentality and will power when the team is on the verge of going out of something, but as far as pure talent goes, he's way behind Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka, Alonso, Rooney, etc.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I feel Alonso has been criminally underrated this season.

Am I the only one to think he's been your best player this season?

To think, that Rafa wanted to sell him last summer, I guess he got a bit lucky that Juve fucked up, otherwise he would have fucked up BIG TIME.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I think that too, he gave a step this season I thought he would never give, winning games by himself, something Gerrard has done a lot but not that much this season.
I've always rated Xabi but this season he won a couple more of points with me.
Lets hope he keep that form, I see him as a leader when Gerrard is not on the field, but I'd like to see him taking over even more next season.
Is that possible?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Nope I think thats fair to say Abou, Alonso is extremely important to Liverpool and gives Gerrard the freedom to what he does.

Well Ronaldo and Torres are both more similar in playing style IMO. Both extremely quick, both can score any kind of goal(Ronaldo has Pens and Set peices extra) both can beat their man quite easily.

While i do agree that Alonso is an absolutely brilliant player, i wouldn't say he's been underrated. LFC TV did a poll for the player of the season and it finished with Alonso at #1 with Gerrard #2. On most of the others he finished just behind Gerrard but most Liverpool fans would agree that Alonso was the top man this season.

When Alonso's not on the pitch we are then left with any 2 of Mascherano, Lucas and Gerrard in the middle. Mascherano's a great defensive player and has an amazing amount of energy and will to fight but he's not the most creative. Lucas can be a very good player but again isn't the most creative, although he has put some great balls in at times. Gerrard is more likely to run with the ball rather than looking to create a move, although if Torres is on the pitch you can guarantee Gerrard will find him with the ball. So basically without Alonso we lose a lot of creativity in the middle, Gerrard gets pulled deeper and Lucas looks like he's shitting himself without Xabi to reassure him.

in short, Xabi Alonso is world class.

Re: Liverpool Thread

for now at least cristiano ronaldo is one of the best footballers in the world but when he is gerrard's age he definately won't be as good as gerrard is now.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Torres is better.

Gerrard's lack of a brilliant "footballing brain" stops him from being as good as not only Torres, but Kaka, Messi, Ronaldo etc.

Lack of a footballing brain? People should stop using that cliche. In what way does he not have a footballing brain? He's intelligent enough to make the right run, and be in the right place to score 15-20 goals every season. He's got enough intelligence to be able to deliver inch perfect passes to Torres. He's intelligent enough to know when to track back, and make a tackle. He's intelligent enough to know how to use his body to beat players without doing a fancy trick.

Fuck, Gerrard might not be the most technical player, or the most skillful, but he's one of the most effective players out there. He's the most completely player in the world, and in recent years, has become the best No. 10 player around. Kaka might be more elegant on the ball, but Gerrard's proven to be far more effective.

20 goals + 15 assists almost every season. Yet he doesn't have a footballing brain? He's got fucking everything about him. He's a monster of an athlete, he can beat players with ease, he scores goals, he's got a great eye for a vision, he scores from free kicks, and unlike certain players, he does as much work tracking back. You play him anywhere on the pitch, and he'll deliver, and he's one of the few players, who'll stand up and be counted when the teams needs it. He's right up there with Messi and Ronaldo for me, and certainly above Kaka, at least based on last season.

Oh, and Alonso is just as important, maybe more important in our team. If the FA had any sense, we'd have Xabi and Vidic fighting out for POTS, rather than Ryan Giggs.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Real Madrid director-general Jorge Valdano admits any bid for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is like to be doomed to failure. (Marca, 0954 BST)

Re: Liverpool Thread

Alonso, Gerrard, Ronaldo, Messi

All different types of players!

Can't compare who is better.

Messi and Ronaldo yes you can compare, Gerrard and Kaka maybe.

I think Abhishek put forward my case for Gerrard pefectly.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Summer activity:
In - Johnson (17mil), Owen (pay-as-you-play)
Staying - Masch and Alonso
Out - Dossena (5-7mil)

Would you be pleased with this? I added Owen as we need a good poacher for very little money and with it all being spent on Johnson there is little else around. At the moment I would just be glad to keep the two, don't think Johnson is worth the 17mil either and Owen is "meh".

Re: Liverpool Thread

Johnson isnt worth 17m, but neither is Ronaldo worth 80m.

Players ARE overpriced, english players even more so, and they will come at a premium considering the imminent 6+5 rule.

Johnson, is quick, strong, good in the air and is comftable in the final third, he's not as bad a defender as people make out and I'm sure Rafa can develop his all round game.

Honestly, I'd be happy with just Johnson, and us keeping all our players (except Dossena, Degen, Itandje, Voronin).

We DON'T need wholesale changes. Fucking made up with Johnson. He'll compliment Kuyt to the hilt. He's a freak of an athlete, and Rafa will add a bit of defensive nous in his game.

Nice to see how smoothly this has gone through. You can bet we'd have messed it up if Parry was in charge.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I'm surprised we haven't sold Itandje yet, as well as no real Voronin rumours to anywhere.

Re: Liverpool Thread

And now we're losing Reina to Barcelona

The press really are running out of stories now.

Think it would be great. Maybe add Saviola to our team instead of Owen it would be a better deal.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Do you like Reina ? I think that I can name you with no trouble a list of 20 GK better than Reina.

Yep, I think he's a VERY good goalkeeper, Spain's number two for a reason.

Name 20 better goalies though, I'd be interested in your list :)

you get worse every day i see your posts on here.

Reina is a quality keeper, you don't win the golden glove 3 years on the run if you're not.
