Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Strong rumors, that we're interested in Downing, and will make a bid in the new few days.

Lovely.

Re: Liverpool Thread

showed a lot more passion while playing for liverpool last night............................ downing would be a good edition to you guys but yossi sucked big time....

Re: Liverpool Thread

That's a bit unfair on Gerrard though, everybody played crap on Wednesday, and for every other England game (apart from Joe Cole I guess).

What do you expect? He's not English, he's scouse :-pp

Yossi looks absolutely stranded on the left when playing in a 4-4-2. Just can't add anything whilst also coping up with defensive duties, as his game is about cutting on, and putting people through, and he can't do that when he's tracking back players out wide.

If we get Downing, I don't think I can ask for much more. Our squad would be almost complete.

Oh, and was I the only one, who was impressed with El Zhar?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Oh, and I can't wait for Mascherano to be back in a Liverpool shirt (the away one on him would look brilliant). It's been way too long.

And talking about shirts, where can I get the Liverpool away with Keane on the back online? With worldwide shipping?

I've been impressed with him ever since he scored that cracker against Cardiff last season. ;))

Re: Liverpool Thread

I must admit the way pool came back and won it was impressive. w/ Mash-a-nator coming w/ a Gold medal around his neck things look promising

Re: Liverpool Thread

You seriously want that shitty grey strip?

I have this top, I got it as a bday present...I think its nice. Guy from Tesco approached me though and said it looks shit...my gf was like "oi who do you support then" and he said "liverpool, its just shit"

Was expecting the worst or a draw the way it was going. Last season a draw would have been the maximum. Also how many strikers did we finish with? (Keane, Torres, Babel, El Zhar and Kuyt?) Was Kuyt still on? And Aurelio who pushes forward quite a bit.

Re: Liverpool Thread

So, Riera and Downing are the two targets for left wing. We have/will bid for both of them, and see what happens. According to rumors, we've bid lower than Everton for Riera, but he's more interested in coming to us.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Can't see Everton getting Riera ahead of us but I wouldn't be too fussed if he did go there.

Not sure if Downing is the better option though?

Re: Liverpool Thread

LIVERPOOL have agreed a fee with Espanyol to sign Spanish winger Albert Riera.

The two clubs held talks last night and agreed a compromise figure in excess of £8m, after Riera informed the Espanyol hierarchy he was only interested in moving to Anfield.

That dashed Everton's hopes of hijacking the deal, despite the fact that Liverpool's Merseyside rivals had made a higher offer for the 26-year-old.

The Reds' urgent need for a left sided midfield player was again apparent at the weekend as Yossi Benayoun again struggled in that role before being replaced by Ryan Babel.

With the Dutchman preferring to operate in a more central position, Rafa Benitez identified Riera as the player he wanted to give his side some much needed width.

Re: Liverpool Thread

good, we need someone

not sure about him myself, but anyone half decent will do right now..

downing i would of been happy with in the current situation, as long as this lad does a job then it will help this season as we are seriously in need of a winger asap

Re: Liverpool Thread

I've seen one thing about Gerrard, i dont know whether its good or bad for Liverpool. Maybe both.
I've seen him play exceptionally well, especially after Liverpool is trailing by 1 goal or 2 goals. I guess the losing part gives him a courage or some kinda thing like that.

Re: Liverpool Thread

He played for Man City for a period and did okay from what I've heard, but apparantly he's improved an awful lot since then and has become a very good player.

I haven't seen him play for Espanyol so can't comment on whether Downing is better. I do like Downing though and would've liked us to have signed him. We didn't really need Barry in any case.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Riera is an out-an-out winger like Downing.

Had a short loan spell at Man City, he was solid,
scored a cracking goal, went back to Espanyol and
has come leaps and bounds, helping Espanyol to the
uefa cup final a few years back becoming a Spanish International.

Not lighting quick, not slow either, a good dribbler and
a very sweet left foot.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Dunno about Riera but wouldn't a premier league tested player do good? Downing would have been a good addition to your team but what will the team composition be now that you have got Riera too?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Would have preferred Downing myself, but Riera is a very good player. He's tall, strong, and very powerful. Isn't lightning quick, but he has got speed, and a few tricks up his sleeve. His shooting leaves a lot to be desired though. On his day, he's devastating. Absolutely destroyed Barcelona last season, and tore Ramos a new one against Real. Was a monster early on in the season for Espanyol.

I'd believe what Ballague says about the players. His transfer reports may not be accurate, but he's almost always spot on with players. He was spot on about both Nando's, and this is what he says of Riera (and he'd know him well, as he plays for his club, Espanyol).

"There have been many English observers who have questioned Riera's abilities following his previous stint in the Premiership at Manchester City. He was not given the opportunity to play in his natural, attacking, position at City, however, and spent his time there being used as a wing back: his natural position is a winger in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

If he does end up playing in a 4-4-2, as he could at Everton, then his coach will need to be constantly on top of him to remind him of his defensive responsibilities and that he will need to track back.

Albert Riera is a quality player but, as someone who can struggle with consistency, he will constantly need an arm around his shoulders and be made to feel important if any manager wants to get the best out of him. He started last term in fabulous form, but without receiving that kind of attention, his form can dip dramatically, as it did over the second half of the season.

Nevertheless, when he is on form, Albert Riera can be one of the best left wingers in Europe. He has a powerful shot, is a strong header of the ball and he is capable of taking on and beating defenders: in spite of not being the quickest around.

In my opinion, he'll make a good signing for either Liverpool or Everton."

We got him really cheap. I bet if we had more money, we'd have gone for Downing.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I will say though, I'm not terribly excited by this signing. Guess we can't afford more though, which is a shame.

I say, keep the faith. I always remember what Rafa managed to do with Vicente, and more recently, Torres.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I wonder if Rafa will make a move for Milner now that he's handed in a transfer request.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I can see SWP going to Everton, he'll be a great signing for £10m.
