Roma are now interested in Benayoun apparantly.

I wish everyone would piss off sniffing around Benayoun. He's got some great skill and is one of the best players in the Prem at taking people on and beating a man. Sure he can have bad games but he's a great player for us and I'd rather we kept him than cash in on him.

Benni is going nowhere. We'll find it impossible to find a player of his quality, who is happy sitting on the bench for 5M.

A couple of notes after watching the highlights:
- Plessis got some kick there .. too hot to handle by the keeper and tapped in by Torres, hopefully he'll better Sissoko at the end.
- Sparing was active and tried a couple of long shots, didn't make them, but the confidence was there.
- Keane, Gerrard, Torres and Yossi combined very well, hopefully we'll see more of that next week against Leige.

Another good friendly win bar Gerrard's thigh problem (out for a week)

Ngog scored another cracker, after being put through by a delightful pass by Pacheco.

Torres with a typical Torres goal, burst of pace and strength and a cool finish. Benayoun with another beauty and a great team goal finished off by Xabi after beeing teed up by Keane.

Voronin does it again!! Shit celebration though.

Dossena looks a real monster. Played most of his game in the 2nd half of the pitch. Plessis looked really comfortable on the ball, and showed a great range of passing. Ngog looks like class so for. Two footed, good pace and acceleration, very good on the ball, and great vision.

And the MOTM, Xabi!! Absolutely love him to bits, showed another master class today. He probably got the kick up the back side he needed, and I'm so glad he's staying. The support for him was fantastic. Keep Xabi Scouse!

Missed it again, I thought we played tomorrow :((

Looks like our best players available played today, interesting to see Plessis in there. I think he'll feature a fair bit this year.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has indicated that Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry remains a serious target.

Benitez refused to name the England midfielder but would not say that the long-running transfer saga was over.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill conceded last week that his captain might leave but reports have suggested that a proposed fee of £18m was the sticking point.

"The situation is not a question of money," said Benitez after Liverpool beat Lazio 1-0 in a friendly on Friday.

"He is English and can play three different positions, but I am talking about someone who can play on the left."

Xabi Alonso had long been expected to make way for the Englishman but he now looks set to stay at Anfield.

"We have a good player (Alonso) and we have another good player coming in soon.

"I do not know when but clearly we have problems on the left, Kewell has gone, Aurelio is injured and Leto cannot get a work permit.

I'm not as convinced as the BBC that he is talking about Barry. Why wouldn't he say Barry's name if it was him? And with him saying it could be a left-sided player rather than central? I'm thinking we've got a winger lined up and we'll pass on Barry with Alonso playing so well.

LIVERPOOL'S move for Gareth Barry was today in major doubt with Tom Hicks and George Gillett still to give the proposed deal the go-ahead.

Rafa Benitez had hoped Barry would already be a Liverpool player by now after Aston Villa gave the Reds the nod to bring the long running saga to an end last Saturday, when Martin O'Neill said he would no longer stand in the way of a deal.

But six days later the transfer is still to be done, leaving Barry in limbo and Benitez furious at the lack of progress.

It now seems increasingly likely that Hicks and Gillett will refuse to back their manager's judgement on this occasion, and the chances of the proposed £18m transfer taking place are receding by the hour.

Benitez identified the 27-year-old England man as a key signing for this summer and was even willing to sacrifice Xabi Alonso to get the deal done.

But, after months of haggling with Villa, Liverpool are still no nearer to concluding the transfer and Benitez is becoming increasingly resigned to the belief that Barry is unlikely to join the club during this transfer window.

The ECHO understands that Liverpool's American owners have major concerns about how much value the signing of Barry would give the Reds.

A proposed four-year contract would take Barry to 31 years old and Hicks and Gillett doubt he would have a significant sell-on value at that stage of his career.

They also believe the figure Villa are demanding for the England man is inflated and do not want to be held to ransom, particularly with Liverpool able to call on the services of Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Damien Plessis and Lucas in central midfield.

But Benitez remains adamant that Barry would improve his squad and believes that even at a cost of £18m the deal is still worth doing as he can play in several positions and would bring vast experience of the Premier League and English football in general.

After working so hard to get a deal in place, Benitez will be devastated if it is called off at the eleventh hour, and would inevitably demand answers from Hicks and Gillett.

The situation is made even more delicate by the fact that Liverpool's pursuit of Barry has been so public and a withdrawal from the proposed transfer at such a late stage would cause severe embarrassment.

Villa had finally agreed to do business and, with Barry desperate to move to Anfield, Benitez had hoped the deal was a formality.He will not take kindly to the club failing to bring in another of his top targets.

Anyway, the CLQF is on itv on wednesday. Cant find anything on the belgium channels though. Hopefully the sportchannel (sky sports but better) will have it on.

Lets just drop the Barry deal, give Xabi another year to get back to his best, and spend some serious money on a quality wide player who can play on both flanks!

I think we need another right back on the level of Dossena too.

In terms of the Barry deal, I think we should trust Rafa with what he is trying to do. I don't think it is a matter of who Barry is personally. I think he just wants a player who can fit into the liverpool 'structure' properly. Someone who doesn't overshadow any of the other players so the team can play well. The reason I think he went for Barry is because he is an experienced player, he fits the 'credentials and he plays in England. (that is probably stating the obvious)

Plus I think Rafa thinks this is probably his last chance which is why he is spending so much on older players. He does not want to risk a flop so he is going for the safest option

Also, if you look at the squads of Chelski and Man U you can see that they have [good] players that are willing to sit on the bench. I think that is something that we have lacked for a long time Crouch did not want to (which is understandable because he had some good reasons). This might be a reason why Rafa needs to (or is labelled to) rotate so much. He does it because he doesn't have quality players who are willing to sit on the bench. This is why I beleive players like Voronin and Barry (who are both old) are valuable to the team. Voronin is good because he is willing to wait for his turn. Anyway, Adding Barry and keeping Alonso (which is what I believe he would want) would just help the squad but as it is his last chance and the owners are not really helping he needs to think of the best solution

Also I think the reason why the owners are so reluctant on giving the money for Barry is that they don't think Rafa is going to win this year. They don't want to waste their money when they belive he will go anyway. They would have Thiago Neves or other big name players for the future so if they don't work out they can sell. Also I may be wrong but I think that when Rafa gave the interview after Leto's permit was rejected he gave a little hint when he said that some people think they no more about football than the manager.

Anyway I might be wrong on all of this but that is the way I see it

Didn't read the interview, but I would think this has more to do with a talented young player not getting a workpermit because he doesnt fit into some ridiculous % of international games and gets denied by some penpusher.
