Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Average performance, but it was a tough away fixture, and 3 points, thanks to NANDO AGAIN!

And THIS IS why we NEED to keep Xabi. He transformed us when he came on. Got us actually playing football. The number of times he found Benayoun and Gerrard in space with his passes in between defense and midfield - just SUBLIME.

And that run later in the half, that would have made Gerrard proud.

Keep Xabi Scouse!

Re: Liverpool Thread

don't let the torres goal or alonso effort deflect from how poor, sorry how shit we actually were

i feel sunderland had more fight in them.

piss poor

Thought we were pretty decent in the 2nd half. Picked up the tempo, but just lacked width to stretch the teams.

We were average, but won in one of the toughest away fixtures. I'm happy

Get someone like Downing in, and we can have a real go.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I agree 2nd half was not that bad...

First time I've Plessis, and I liked, solid passing, good technique can really turn out on another good central midfield.

But the team still lacks creative and wingers, don't even think only Downing can solve it.

Oh and Lucas was great a Olympics today, and Babel will be back

We get Downing, and Babel comes back. Those are pretty decent attacking options. Not to mention Lucas too, who's very creative.

Re: Liverpool Thread

But I don't think Rafa will play Downing and Babel,

Even if he does I still see Babel more as a striker than a winger, his crossing is not that good and he is not that technical.
He is better with dashes and finishing, not much of a playmaker.

I don't see Babel as a winger either. Neither as a main striker. More of as a forward, given a free role. Point is, he'd be another quality attacking option.

Personally, if I had the choice, I'd play Downing on the left, Xabi and Masch, and Gerrard on the right. Gerrard drifted to the right, almost the whole game today.

Re: Liverpool Thread

A good result considering the doom and gloom that has reappeared at a 'timely' moment. Not only that, but, but we were also missing Mash and Babel.

And Torres is off the marka gain. Should give him confidence to go on and repeat his success.

And yes, keep Xabi Scouse. Our problem is not in central midfield FFS!

Re: Liverpool Thread

Thats the funny thing, some of you are saying "We need a wide man" but Benitez seems to think you dont?! I first thought this was because of the way he wanted to play but it seems he just thinks Kuyt is a good winger:SS Even though you lot have Gerrard and Masch for the middle with Alonso and Lucas as alternatives your main transfer target this summer was Barry?!:tumble:

I'm really starting to wonder what Rafa is thinking? Gerrard isnt a wide man neither is Kuyt? Great goal by Torres though but other than that it seems like same old Liverpool.

Re: Liverpool Thread

To be fair on Rafa and the boys today, that was a good win under the circumstances. Its obvious to us all we require a good left sided player/winger, we are without 3 quality players who are at the Olympics, the touble from the boardroom continues and also following a terrible performance in europe. To be honest after all this, a victory today by whatever means is fantastic. The game itself was as follows...a very poor first 30 minutes but from then on we dominated. Ok we didnt cut them open frequently, but once Xabi arrived we had more creativity. No suprise it was Nando to the rescue, but how many times did Ronaldo do it for Manure last season.....be happy we won eh guys!!!

Re: Liverpool Thread

it is so obvious we need decent wingers..

our spine of the team as stated by many of people is very very good, but teams can defend easier when it is all going through the middle, we need natural width to give us another dimension to stretch teams and make them think twice

we were so lucky to get the win, don't get me wrong i am made up but we cannot keep playing like that

we don't need barry and i would rather alonso, i would rather any money we have spent on a decent winger or two, even if it means breaking the bank because we have no attacking flair especially on the wings

babel is a good player but still not a natural winger, yoshi also comes inside alot

personally i would be happy with downing in the current market, obv prefer silva but he is 20m+?

just need to stretch teams, we have 4 good central defenders, good midfield with gerrard, masch, alonso, upfront with keane and torres

great spine, just no frills on the wing which is painfully obvious as the final pieces to the jigsaw

Re: Liverpool Thread

Rafa gave an interview a few days back, talking about being interested in a left sided player who was English, but not Barry.

Richardson?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Drenthe? Interesting. Would certainly make our left side a bit lively.

I hear he's a bit of a cunt though, but defo talented.

Downing, I'm warming to actually, I don't think theres many affordable options out there that will suit the PL.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Yeah we really lacked width yesterday. The amount of times an attack came to a standstill once Kuyt was on the ball was terrible. He just doesnt have the pace or skill to be on the wing, especially against teams like Sunderland who for the most part will just sit back and soak it up. Beni Noon comes inside a lot, but atleast he beats players. But even then it's all through the middle. Also Torres started to play a bit better once Keane went off, formation went back to the better 4-2-3-1. Not sure how well he is going to fit in, tbh I dont think 4-4-2 is the formation to play in with our squad.

Nice effort from Xabi, nearly caught Gorden out from the halfway line. Xabi seems to be running again this season, last year he was so slow and never seemed to run anywhere.

Good result for a tough first fixture.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Well for all those people who are impressed with Xabi, reports are growing that he wants to leave. Even Rafa wont say he is staying. Got a feeling the next 2 weeks will be very interesting with our squad. I think the idea of Downing joing us would be a good signing. Amazing we are playing Middlesboro this weekend aswell. So im expecting alot more rumours, still wouldnt bet on Barry still joining!!

Re: Liverpool Thread

Anyone else getting deja-vu? We played crap against Liege and had Gerrard coming out saying they know they were crap and will step it up against Sunderland.

Now we've got Kuyt and Hyppia saying they know they weren't good enough and will step it up for Boro. Personally I'm bored of reading their comments after games admitting they were shit and will get better. It's all good saying you'll get better, but we want actions and not words.

We'll thrash Boro

Re: Liverpool Thread

We should've thrashed Sunderland though. Fair enough, Sunderland have signed some good players and are a decent team under Keane. But we really shouldn't be struggling against them.

Also Boro will be on a high after beating Spurs.

Is Babel available for the Boro game?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Sunderland are a tough team away. Arsenal struggled against West Brom at home. It's just start of the season, and players haven't reached their peak. We played shit, but won, that's what's important.

Babel should be available. We need him.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Yep, I'm looking forward to Babel returning. He should be in good shape too.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I personally feel thet Downing would be magnificant for Liverpool. I think he just gets a bad rep because of how naff he (usually) plays for England.

Nah

It's because he plays for Middlesbrough, rather than Valencia or Sevilla.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I don't rate Downing to highly, He reminds me of Pennant but can cross instead. The one English LM I think that can make it at a top team is Young. He seems really consistent, can beat his man, put in a decent ball and also chips in with goals.

You mean Ashley? He's been good lately but he's staying I'm afraid :brick:

Downing will be better than anyone at Liverpool's left side, that's for sure so he'll be an upgrade, but will he be another Pennant?

Re: Liverpool Thread

He's better than Pennant but not by much. Zhirkov would be someone you lot should look at.

Re: Liverpool Thread

See, this is what I don't get.

Ashley Young is consistent, can beat his man, put in a decent ball and also chips in with goals. Oh well, so is Downing. As a matter of fact, Downing was the highest scoring midfielder last season after Gerrard, Lampard and of course Ronaldo. And he got around 10 assists, when Boro had average strikers like Mido playing. And not just last year. He's been doing it for a few years now. And he's naturally left footed, which Young is not.

And Zhirkhov? Seriously? What has he down to prove that he is better than Downing? One good performance against Sweden?

I seriously feel sorry for players like Downing. Just 'cos he doesn't have a fancy name, plays for Boro, rather than a Spanish club, and hasn't been bought for an inflated fee by another club, he's considered nowhere near good for a top 4 team, especially Liverpool, where he'd be better than any other wide player we have.

People ignore the fact that for over 2 years, he's been consistently performing in the league, and has been at the top of the assists charts. And last season, when Boro didn't seem to have quality strikers, he took it upon himself to contribute by scoring some goals himself, while still creating goals. A player who's consistently performed against the Big 4, and has been Boro's biggest danger whenever they've played the big teams. Was more impressive that any other players over both fixtures against us IMO. Scored a goal, created one and hit the cross bar one, only against Liverpool. Not to mention he made Chelsea cling onto dear life when Boro played them. And ripped apart Arsenal at the Riverside last season and against United.

But no, he's not good enough, he plays for fucking Boro....
