Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Abhishek your comments about Degen have got me a bit excited to see this guy play. I don't really remember a lot about the Swiss team at the world cup to be honest - I was to busy trying to watch everything to do with Australia. ;)
But if Sina rated him highly or saw him as having a lot of potential I think that is great. Dossena seems like a great prospect from all I have heard about him and it's about time Liverpool got a good Italian player, I don't think we have had many Italian players at all though, I really hope we get him, that would mean the end of Riise though I think, I don't see Riise leaving as result of his blunder against Chelsea though - overall he had a very average season in my opinion and offered very little to the team, where as Aurelio seemed to get better and better.

I can't see Rafa selling Arbeloa though, Finnan and Riise yes, Arbeloa no - He is a decent option always for Rafa and is still quite young.

It will be interesting to see what areas Benitez tries to strengthen from here on but I suppose that will be down to who leaves and how much cash the owners will give him, either way I think the squad is and will be the strongest one ever under Rafa next season.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Degen is not that good anymore that good anymore, he was few years back.... maybe rafa will have him back to playing well?

Re: Liverpool Thread

That story was out a few weeks ago, I pasted it on here. Liverpool laughed Chelsea off immediately.

Re: Liverpool Thread

so no price could temp the cow-boys (hicks - gillette) to sell him....imagine if they did?.....:w00t:

Re: Liverpool Thread

Thats bollox Plan M, the difference between Chelsea and Liverpool isn't that big at ALL.

glad you said that coz its nearly the same difference between liverpool and everton which is 11 points.

difference between liverpool and chelsea = 9 points.

I see that as the only reason Rafa bought him. Potential talent, but at the wrong club.

Typical Rafa signing IMO. A player who's made the wrong career move. Either stayed at a particular club for too long, or made the move to a wrong club.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I hope Arbeloa and Pennant stay. Arbeloa's defensive work is solid and is always reliable when called upon. True, he doesn't offer much going forward, but there will be games where defense will be a priority. Plus, with some strengthening in the wings, we probably won't need a fullback in the 16 mil mold (cough Chelski cough). Pennant isn't as bad as people make him out to be, he's got pace, skills, and an accurate cross on him--just needs to work on his decision making and pace of his crosses. Sad to hear Finnan is gonna go, he was good even just a season ago.

But Riise's departure won't keep me up at night..in fact I might sleep better!

Pennant hasn't really stepped up, if he's happy
to sit on the bench as squad player then fine.

I hear we could go for Sergio Garcia of Zaragoza,
maybe we can buy a couple more of their players...
Milito, Aimar, zapater...

Glad you said that because you aren't in the Champions League challenging consistently against teams like Chelsea and Man United.

Most neutrals have said that that Semi Final could have gone either way.

Re: Liverpool Thread

AND NEITHER ARE LIVERPOOL CHALLENGING TEAMS LIKE CHELSEA AND MAN UNITED.

Didn't he say Champions League? At least Liverpool's CL campaigns last almost a whole year, unlike Everton, who finish their CL adventure in a week.

It's pretty clear though. There's the Big 2 of the 2 richest clubs, Chelsea and United. Then there's the Big 4, when you include Arsenal and Liverpool. And then there's the rest of Everton, Aston Villa, Blackburn etc.

Yet, it's still the BESTEST LEAGUE EVER OMG!! :-pp

Talking about signings, think we will have a mass clear out. Plenty of the dead wood gone. I fully expect Crouch, Carson, Riise, Pennant, and maybe Voronin, Finnan and Xabi to be somewhere else next summer.

Degen's done, and looks like Dossena might also come here. Those are the full back positions sorted, with 2 attack minded, athletic full backs, while we have Arbeloa, Carra, and Aurelio who could take the defensive duties. And, obviously, Insua, waiting in the wings.

Would like to see us strengthen our attack a bit. 2 attacking midfielders would be nice. I'd personally go for Bentley and Mancini. Bentley, because he's top class, and already performing regularly in the league. And Mancini, 'cos despite being inconsistent, he's still one of the best out there. He'll be pretty cheap, as he can buy his contract, so around 7-8M should do it.

I'd be pretty happy with that. Our spine is world class IMO. 2 young center backs, and 2 experienced center backs. Then we have Masch, Alonso in midfield, and Lucas and Plessis, both of whom are potential stars (Lucas especially). Think Gerrard, and Benayoun (think he was really misused this season) are good enough for the position behind the striker. Cover for Torres might be a problem. Though, if we're short of cash, I'd be happy moulding Babel into a striker next season, and Kuyt as cover, and hope Nemeth can step up as 4th choice striker.

So, those 4 signings would make me very happy. Barry, IF Xabi leaves (let's hope he doesn't). And another striker to cover for Torres, if we are short on cash (Weren't we interested in Zarate?).

Oh, and I'd give Babel the No. 10 shirt. Let's force upon him the legacy of Barnes, Owen and Garcia. If there's one player who needs an injection of confidence it's him. God knows, he'd be a world beater, if he believed in himself.

I'll go into the season, expecting another great CL run, but won't expect us to win the league. At this moment, Chelsea and United are too strong, and will only improve in the summer (more than us). Think there's a few things in case we MAY challenge.

1. Agger being back, and back to his 100%. If he is, then expect him to register himself as one of the best CBs in Europe (and some goals too :DD).

2. Babel getting a good run in the Euros, and improving upon this season. Babel will be HUGE for us, if he actually fulfills his potential.

3. Improving defending AND attacking set pieces. We're probably the worst team in the league at both of them. I think defending will be sorted next season. But attacking them!! Attack the ball and DO NOT let Gerrard take them. That's one reason why I'm excited about Sammy coming in as assistant. He was assistant at Bolton, and Bolton during that time, were the best team in scoring from set pieces. Hope he can improve them here.

And a few good signings, and we MIGHT see us surprising a few people next season.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Honestly i just dont see you lot having the funds. Gerrard was rallying everyone on the other day saying you lot need to spend etc, i just don't see it. If you sell all those that you listed no doubt you would have a great starting 11 but a non existent backup side.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Didn't he say Champions League?

mate your such bull-shitters!
you dont challenge the big boys in the cl or prem

the cl aint what it was, like years ago, because then it was the champions of each country , now its the champions and three wannabee`s.

Re: Liverpool Thread

We'll get our funds from selling players. Alonso's sale would fund Barry, whilst selling Carson, Pennant, Riise, Finnan(?) and obviously Crouch would raise a fair stack on money I reckon. Certainly enough to buy two attacking midfielders and a backup striker (although I'd be pleased to see Nemeth act as backup).

I'd pay someone to take Voronin off us, I don't ever want to see him in a Liverpool shirt again. He must have had a clause in his contract saying he needs to play X minutes per season if fit because I just can't see why Rafa would play him ahead of Crouch. Get rid.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Here we go again, another arguement and Blue started it all off again

The only thing I'll say is, how can you say we dont challenge the big boys in the CL? That's a ridiculously naive comment to make and I think you're fully aware of the teams we've beaten, the stages we've gotten to and the cup we won, right? Jeez.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Yeh but Dags you mentionend a little chunk of squad players there being sold for 2 attacking midfielders, yes it would give you a good starting 11 but then wheres the backup to those players when rested/rotated

Shame we don't challenge teams in the Champions League. 3 semi finals, 2 finals, 1 winner's trophy in 4 years :((

Juventus (Champions of Italy), Chelsea (Champions of England), Barcelona (Champions of Spain), Inter Milan (Champions of Italy).

In the last 4 years, Liverpool are the most successful team in the Champions League. Yes, we don't challenge ;))

Stop being so bitter mate. Liverpool started the resurrection of English sides in Europe. We've produced some of the greatest matches, and some of the greatest performances in Europe.

I actually praise Everton. You are a good side, Moyes is a top class manager, some of your players are top quality. I'm not going to start saying 'Everton are shite, Everton only sing about Liverpool' etc etc, because I'm above that. I'm a football fan first, and then a Liverpool fan.

Honestly i just dont see you lot having the funds. Gerrard was rallying everyone on the other day saying you lot need to spend etc, i just don't see it. If you sell all those that you listed no doubt you would have a great starting 11 but a non existent backup side.

Honestly, neither do I. The fact is, we're skint, well and truly skint. When we should be out there, bidding for the likes of Dani Alves, we are signing Philipp Degen on a bosman. It is kind of depressing, but let's hope Rafa's pulled a rabbit out of the hat.

Do think we'll raise quiet a few by selling some players. Don't think we'll miss the likes of Riise, and Pennant, especially, since we'll sign replacement (both Dossena and Bentley have been linked). Not to mention, Carson and Guthrie, who'll be sold for some cash, and they don't even play for us. Think Rafa will raise a decent amount by selling players. Need to invest those properly though.

Hypothetically, if we bought the players I mentioned, we'll have something like this

--------------Reina---------------
Degen----Carra----Agger----Dossena
---------Masch----Xabi------------
-------------Gerrard--------------
Bentley------Torres---------Mancini

And a backup squad of

-------------New Keeper------------
Arby-----Sami-----El Skirt--Aurelio
---------Plessis----Lucas----------
--------------Nemeth---------------
Kuyt-----------Babel----------Yoshi

Not that bad if you ask me. And Yossi, Bentley and Mancini could also play in Gerrard's position. And this is with 4 signings. We might get another striker (Zarate!!).

Re: Liverpool Thread

I hope you lot get Mancini instead of us. We're linked with him and I really don't want him.

Haha

I don't really like Mancini much. Think he's very overrated. Nowhere near a world class winger. But he's still one of the best wingers out there (which reflects the lack of quality wide players). Inconsistent, but one his day is just devastating. And you know what you're going to get. 8-12 goals/season and 4-6 assists/season. So, that's a player creating 15 goals every season, which isn't too bad. And at the prices being mentioned, he would be a bargain.

But I just don't see Rafa getting him. Don't think Rafa likes his attitude. Rafa always talks about having the right mentality, and having the hunger and passion to win trophies here. Don't think Mancini has that.

Re: Liverpool Thread

What about Dos Santos, he's been linked with you lot, apparantly Parry was in Spain trying sign him.

Haven't heard of that at all :tumble:

Anyways, if Parry is doing the deal, then we're screwed.

Erm, We got the the Quarters in 2002, Won it in 2005, Knockout Stages 2006, Finalists 2007, Semi Finalists 2008.

Cheslea haven't won the Champions League. And we've been in more finals than them in recent years. We've knocked them out of two semi finals, and in 2006 during the group stages we shared two goaless draws.

and the actual team in question that started the argument and the fact that we have knocked them out of two semi finals?:BY:
