Ongoing review of sorts at GT Planet.

I've just been banned from those forums for posting the following comment (and also for questioning these viral-marketing'esque, so-called "reviews" that keep hyping up the game by downplaying/not mentioning glaring issues such as realistic damage being anything but realistic, I guess) lol:

You know, I could care less about VISUAL damage because you can only do so much with 5 years old technology and I would never give up nice looking cars and environments for realistic chassis deformation. Let's leave that for the GT6 to-do list.

MECHANICAL damage however is a make-or-break (no pun intended) feature in a sim-oriented game that deems itself as "The Real Driving Simulator" and seems to be striving for realism, perfection and completeness in such an uncompromising way (or so to speak).

Being able to push a car to its limits without ever trespassing the threshold that would get it totalled, while both your life and the race outcome are at stakes is what tells skilled drivers apart. Driving ain't driving if going beyond said limits bears no consequence, no matter how you look at it.

Think of Touge battle-style races, would they still be as exciting if cars were made of invincibilitium and there was no way to break the guard rails and fall down the cliff?

Also, last I checked cars in RL are pretty darn fragile, you can put pretty huge dents on them by just hitting an obstacle at 3 Km/h in the parking lot and an 80 Km/h crash is likely to put your car to sleep for good, which is why you're constantly being EXTRA FUCKING CAREFUL not to ever brush yours against anything and that alone influences your driving conduct a lot. Where's this in the GT series?

Dont'cha think that F1 drivers would be a whole lot more reckless if their suspensions arms didn't get crushed to smithereens by the lightest touch?

BESIDES, online's gonna be a total MESS unless some sort of mechanical damage feature is in place (the penalty system/ghosting in GT5:P was way too random to be reliable), haven't we had our fair share of Bumpercars games with people riding walls 24/7 and kicking you out of the track on the 1st corner?

So, STOP saying that damage doesn't matter, only ridicolously biased fanboys and those who've never actually driven a real car would dare to make such inane claim.

You have received an infraction at GTP Forums.

You have been warned about your attitude before, you have received infractions for it as well.

Seems that you failed to learn from either of those things, so here are another 10 points. That brings you to 30 and your ban.

Scaff

Blame Gran Turismo overall mediocrity on its fanbase retardness.

Fucking casuals, they're even worse than FIFA fanboys.

hood cam .

AFAIK there's no hood cam either for standard cars, just bumper (no car)/roof/wide cam.

Seriously what have they been doing all these years?
You can only change the wheels and have an interior view on 200 cars, that is a joke. I would rather they just had 200 cars in the game than have all these other half assed ones

Edit: just read the above post, there is no mechanical damage? You can still drive into walls at 100mph and use them to corner with no penalty?????

I have not read much about this game, I got GT5P and enjoyed it but felt that it was too unrealistic to provide any lasting challenge or lifespan. I was hoping that GT5 would be what I was looking for but the more I read about it the more I feel like I should cancel my pre order.

Isn't on the web, just need go to shop and get it, i don't joke, one shop (Micromania) says you can get GT5 the 18 november, all people think it's exclusif to this shop, but others shops says "no no, you can get the game the 18 november too in Fnac, Auchan, Games etc..."

800 or so cars not having an interior view is inexcusable, it won't stop me from buying the game but it will definitely take away from the overall experience when driving those cars.

Do you reckon its feasible for a patch down the line to add interiors to some of them (if not all) or is it just wishful thinking.

Is the proper damage limited to certain cars or is it like that across the board?

Well my account has been charged by Shopto now, and they are processing my preorder.

But I don't expect them to ship till Monday, meaning I will recieve on tues or wed.

It is a shame independent game stores have closed down now, as they normally all used to do an over the counter service when buying games.

That's never going to happen, sure it came out there last week that they are already working on GT6.

all 1000+ cars have mechanical damage

The game looks stunning and there are some neat touches, but it's painfully clear to see that the AI has not progressed from the PS2, or even the PS1 days for that matter. It's depressing to see the AI cars stick rigidly to the racing line, show no aggression, never make a mistake, nor have any spacial awareness of the player controlled vehicle around them. It's the classic problem with the GT series and something which I feared would still be present on next-gen.

Throw in the joke that is premium cars and the lack of damage or real cockpits for the other 800 cars and GT5 smacks of a poorly planned and rushed game, which is simply astonishing given the development period of this game.

Disappointed.

Forza 3 is still a fine looking game with decent AI, great car physics and damage and cockpit views for all cars. Credit to Turn 10 for making Polyphony Digital look a bit silly.

Sorry Jamez, I have pretty much agreed with your posts 99% of the time since we have a similar opinion but thats a load of nonsense. The AI is admittedly not the best it could be but to call it the same as in the PSone days is ludicrous. Through each iteration of GT the AI system has evolved. In GT4 the AI became quite challenging especially as you progressed through the event stages. Couple this with the professional physics model in GT5: Prologue and no driver assists and the game can be extremely difficult.

While it is a shame that there is no cockpit view in the 800 or so standard cars they are still completely playable and each has their own different behaviour and nuances. Plus all the cars in the game can be tuned, upgraded and damaged during the course of the game.

All in all the game is overrunning with content and has far more than any version of Forza has ever had. There are over 1000 cars including NASCAR, SuperGT, Go-Karts, Concept vehicles and a couple of F1 cars. Weather conditions including snow, damage, an improved physics system, B-Spec mode (where you manage your drivers), License Tests, Special Events such as the Jeff Gordon NASCAR School and the Top Gear Challenge, over 20 different tracks, day to night cycle on some courses, full steering wheel support even, 16 player online races and 32 player lobbies, GT Anywhere, the possibility of future DLC, the incredible graphics engine and thats not even all of it.

I can understand some peoples frustration but most people have known about the issues mentioned for quite a few months and have gotten over it. I know its been in development for 5 years but I think some people need to tone down their expectation levels. Its not the second coming of Christ! Its not going to be perfect. There will still be problems and I for one look forward to GT6 in 2015! :)

BillyBoy,

While I do agree with most things you've said, the fact is I've seen several videos where the AI simply ignores you're there and sticks to its racing line no matter what, and thats not acceptable in 2010.

I've played a bit of Need for Speed HP the last few days, and the AI is pretty good there, constantly making mistakes, but aware of you presence at all times. If you brake out of nowhere in front of them, they brake or change lanes to avoid hitting you, if you get close to them side by side, they back off a bit.

I was already willing to look away from some of the horrible standard cars, and the lack of proper mechanical damage, but if the AI remains stupid, I think I won't be able to enjoy the game, especially because it's meant to be played for months. With no decent AI, it will feel sterile and souless.

Some artifacts on standard cars are really awful:

Thats really bad especially when the premium cars look so great. It seems that with the standard cars there are some that are really bad (just upscaled PS2 vehicles) like the ones above and some that look good.

I dunno... I know that looks bad, but it is just 1 frozen frame. You may not even be able to see it in game.

Anyway, despite not intending to pick this up day 1, it's now shipped from shopto and should have it tomorrow.

I didn't realise until earlier today that the non premium cars don't even have a cockpit view. I though they may just have a generic one, but that is really pony. I'd rather they just left those cars out altogether. Now I've got to play with the chase cam as I hate bonnet cam.

In fact, I know very little about this game! How is the career mode structured, or is it just races for cash, buy cars, repeat?
