I had a hunch Navas would save Gekas's penalty. They were teammates at Levante for the 2012-2013 season. I'm surprised that Samaras or Torosidis didn't take one of the first four penalties based on their form throughout the group stage. Also, how nonchalant was Mitroglou's penalty?! Oh, and most importantly, congratulations Costa Rica!

Well done Costa Rica, although I was rooting for Greece.

Even before the sending off, Greece had definetely had the chances to finish the match.

He has really matured he took that spot kick w such grace. I hope his home club gies him a spot on in the squad.

yeah, that campbell kid was really impressive so far this tournament. most definitely worth a spot at arsenal. :))

sad to see greece go out, but on the other side i'm happy for costarica.... it was kinda like the brasil-chile game; i wanted both teams to proceed as far as possible in the cup.
what a shame about mexico though. i really thought they could pull it off... and they almost did.

Brasil definitly doesn´t have it´s best harvest, there is a big gap between Kaka and Ronaldinho´s generation(32years) and Neymar´s one(22 years).
But still if you watch the majority of Brasileirão clubs you´ll see they play exactly like Brasil is playing on the last four games, the ball beign throw from the defence to attack, ONLY!

I insist in saying it doesn´t have a midfield, in my opinion this is due to the lack of good coaches here, coaches nowadays in Brasil seem to be only motivators(Felipão beign the posterboy) and NOT tacticians!
And I insist even more that Brasil needs a foreign coach with a neutral and objective view who values the ball possession and passing.
Coaches like Guardiola, Bielsa, Carlos Bianchi would take the best out of playes like Ganso, Coutinho, Bernard, Willian, Lucas, among others.
But that´s an utopia, we all know that CBF and the Brazilian conservative people and press would never accept a foreigner. Even if one came it surely would be boycotted.

I hope I´m wrong but the future of Brasil appears to be dark.
Of course is football and Brasil might win the World Cup playing in this poor way motivated by the crowd like it did last year in Confederations Cup, I hope Felipão can pull a rabbit out of the hat and get rid of Fred placing Neymar as a false 9 and fill the midfield with Willian, Fernandinho and Oscar.

You are sort of proving my point there, most brazilian clubs play like that, you are absolutely right.
Thing is you blame the coach, while I blame the players. Don't get me wrong I'm one of those that have always hated motivators, these are the worst kinda of coaches.
And I agree with you again, when you say that the coach should be taking out the best of Ganso, Coutinho and company.
But I also believe these are still average players at most and they will not sort the playmaking problem.

People tend to over analyze world cups, this time is the 'death of possession!'
I totally disagree with that though, if you asked any coach I bet they love possession, thing is these 'final' years of tiki-taka the players are simply not good enough to do it, or at least not in the same form.
The objective should always be balance when you have the ball with when you don't have the ball, I imagine if coaches didn't even have to worry about the defensive balance they would love it. But only brilliant players at pretty much all positions will be able to completely dominate possession.

This world cup is awesome cause there is no concentration of elite players on one team, well perhaps Germany. But its been awesome with these average players.

Pitty. The better team lost this time (Greece). Costa rica didnt produce anything in the game. Such a pitty for us Greeks. We deserved to qualify in quarter-final...

The "best" team is always hard to justify in a 11 vs 10 match. Costa Rica more or less had to play as they did after the red card and the result was fair enough. If a team doesn't manage to capitalize on being a man extra on the field, then they don't particularly deserve to win in my opinion.

That being said, it's not much harder to defend with 10 men on the pitch, it's the attacking part that becomes much harder and is also why Greece dominated and Costa Rica created little as the match progressed.

I understand your disappointment though, polakis, I imagine everyone does.

Greece had 60 minutes with 11 vs 10 in the game and couldn´t score two goals against Costa Rica, sorry but they deserved to be eliminated for that.

they deserve what they got when they had (5) vs (2) players in the final 3rd near the very end extra time :))

+ 1 , special 2x15 minutes, they should have scored in extra time, glad Costa Rica won in penalty's, if they manage to go untill there with 10 players than I believe they deserved more to win!

So true. Three goals in four matches isn't enough to be participating in a quarter final.

Costa Rica won a group containing Italy, England and Uruguay and have been a more interesting team to watch compared to Greece. I'm glad they made the quarters, they deserve it.

France is so afraid to lose their tactical discipline and position defensively that they are almost throwing the game away. No pressure whatsoever.

Btw, this pitch is horrible. How can a WC be played on this shit. FIFA is made a shit tone of money on this tournament and can't afford a reasonable pitch. Players can't make a straight pass without the ball bobbling all over the place.

Referee should put a France shirt on now, awful officiating, good goal, some weird decisions and probably the worst tackle of the world cup from Matuidi, Nigeria have no chance.......mark my words France will get a pk.

In every single match of this tournamentFrance should have had a sending off. Today even two: Giroud for that elbow and Matuidi for the horrific tackle that injured the Nigerian player.

Pogba could have been sent off in the first game. Giroud in the second and Matuidi should definitely been sent off in the third one.

Don't get me wrong, i quite enjoyed them, but they tend to do some dangerous things now and then.

Where’s been this Nigeria? They been playing so poorly and today they are looking so good. So much pace, so much stamina. Their wing play is been amazing. They should've been ahead.
The French look a bit lost, without a plan. For watching the game you would thought that they are the underdogs.

That was offside. Not by much, but it was. Check the pattern of the grass and you can notice it, that was a correct call.
